IPL 2026: Sunil Gavaskar defends David Miller’s not having a single call with Kuldeep Yadav during DC vs GT
The match between Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Titans at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on April 8 emerged as one of the most exciting encounters of the season. David Miller’s decision to deny Kuldeep a single run and retain strike on the last ball proved decisive in the outcome.

Miller, returning from injury, played a brilliant inning of 41 runs in 20 balls. After the dismissal of KL Rahul, Delhi had a big target in front of them and they needed 45 runs in the last three overs. Miller responded aggressively, hitting two fours and a six off Mohammed Siraj in the 19th over, before hitting a four off Prasidh Krishna in the final over.
Due to this the equation became two runs on two balls. Miller hit the ball to deep square leg but decided not to take a run to remain on strike. Prasidh’s last ball was well played; Miller missed the run and Kuldeep failed to reach the crease in time, resulting in a Gujarat Titans win by one run.
After the game, Sunil Gavaskar commented on Miller’s choice, suggesting that it would have been better for him to give strike to Kuldeep. However, Gavaskar acknowledged Miller’s confidence in finishing the game considering his form in the previous overs.
Gavaskar said, “Yes, he was backing himself to score the winning runs, but given the way Kuldeep Yadav pushed the ball forward for a run on the first ball, perhaps he should have given strike to Kuldeep.” “He should have given the strike. It all makes sense after the incident, but the fact is, the way he was hitting in the previous over and that over as well, he was confident that he could do it, that’s all. So you can’t blame him for that. He was confident that he could do it, but it didn’t happen because the ball that Prasidh Krishna bowled was an absolutely brilliant delivery.”
‘Didn’t want to take risk with Kuldeep’
Kevin Pietersen offered another perspective, suggesting that Miller may have seen taking a single as a risk that could lead to losing the match outright, instead preferring to avoid it by retaining the strike.
“I think it’s purely based on the fact that he thought that with that last ball, he would be guaranteed to get at least one ball. And if not one, he would hit it out of the ground because he is very good at hitting the ball out of the ground. So that’s where his mind must have been. Does he want to take the risk of getting Kuldeep out or Kuldeep out?” Peterson said. He further added, “Yes, they’ve tied the game, and yes, they’ve got the Super Over, but they thought with that last delivery, I’ll definitely get one. Worst case scenario, one. I’m not going to miss it. Best case scenario, I’ll get 2,3,4,5,6. He was right there.”
after the match, Delhi Capitals captain Akshar Patel consoled MillerWho praised Miller’s efforts in bringing the team closer to victory. Delhi Capitals’ next match will be against Chennai Super Kings on 11 April.
