Shock to arms consultant, Delhi HC retains 'fugitive criminal' tag

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Thursday upheld the trial court order declaring UK-based arms consultant Sanjay Bhandari a “fugitive economic offender” in a money laundering case. Justice Neena Bansal Krishna found no merit in the appeal filed by the fugitive and dismissed it. In July 2025, a trial court had declared Bhandari a “fugitive economic offender” on the ED’s plea, enabling the agency to seize all of Bhandari’s assets. However, his chances of coming to India were almost over after a UK court ruled against his extradition. Bhandari’s legal team claimed that he was “legally living there (in the UK), and it is legally wrong to declare him a ‘fugitive’ in that scenario”. The trial court said that the extradition attempt may fail, but it “will not make the accused an angel or exempt him from prosecution for violation of Indian laws”.
