The Congress chief also questioned the timing of the special Parliament session scheduled from April 16 to 18 and alleged that it was aimed at gaining political mileage. “The Modi government is calling Parliament meetings with the sole intention of scoring political points and is keen to pass the constitutional amendment bill in a hurry,” Kharge said.He said the proposed amendments could have a significant impact on India’s electoral system and therefore required “very thorough deliberations”. Kharge said, “Based on the information we have received so far, the government wants to implement women’s reservation from the 2029 elections… It wants to increase the number of seats in the Lok Sabha from 543 to 816.”Expressing concern over the delimitation process, he said, “This delimitation proposal will have serious consequences. Therefore, there is a need for very thorough deliberations on the delimitation.”Kharge further alleged that the government ignored the opposition’s request to hold an all-party meeting after the end of voting in West Bengal. “This is a violation of the model code of conduct… We have no expectation of [the Election Commission] We will also take cognizance of these violations,” he said.The meeting, attended by senior leaders including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, discussed the government’s proposal on women’s reservation, delimitation and the broader political context ahead of the upcoming elections.In a Facebook post, Rahul Gandhi said, “Congress is strongly committed to ensuring women empowerment and social justice.”The government is expected to introduce a bill during the special session to implement the Women’s Reservation Act and increase Lok Sabha seats, with a significant portion reserved for women, before the 2029 general elections.
