Chennai Super Kings’ decision to retire Ayush Mhatre came at a crucial juncture in his innings during the IPL 2026 match against Delhi Capitals at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday. The move was aimed at accelerating the scoring in the final overs and contributing to CSK’s first win of the season.

At 175 for two in the 18th over, the innings had lost momentum after a strong middle phase. Lungi Ngidi bowled the 17th over and T Natarajan bowled accurate yorkers to limit the set batsmen’s ability to hit boundaries.

Mhatre, who had led the innings with 59 off 36 balls, was struggling to increase the run rate. With only a few overs remaining, CSK opted to retire him to bring in Shivam Dubey, who is known for his ability to attack the death bowlers from the start.

“There was nothing special. I was batting and the team needed some big shots. Shivam can also hit big shots. I wasn’t really able to do that, so the team planned it that way. It happens in sports,” Mhatre said after the match on Star Sports.

The strategy paid off as Dubey provided the needed late boost, helping CSK cross the 200-run mark and finish at 212 for two.

Earlier in the innings, Mhatre had played an important role with Sanju Samson by adding 113 runs for the second wicket. This partnership is now CSK’s second highest partnership against Delhi Capitals in IPL history. His stance carried the innings forward after the early dismissal of Ruturaj Gaikwad and maintained a steady scoring rate in the middle overs.

CSK’s total proved to be enough as they bowled out Delhi Capitals for 189 runs. Won by 23 runs and opened their account in IPL 2026.

The atmosphere at CSK feels like a family.

Mhatre also reflected on his experience within the Chennai Super Kings setup and highlighted the support he has received.

“It’s very different and feels like a family to me. They treat me like a kid, so I really enjoy playing with them. The support staff is also very helpful and working hard for us.”

With this retirement, Mhatre joins a select group of players including Ravichandran Ashwin and Devon Conway who have retired from the IPL, and is only the second CSK player to retire despite reaching a half-century.
