Kolkata: Suspended Trinamool MLA Humayun Kabir has admitted that a video released by the party – purportedly showing him demanding Rs 1,000 crore from the BJP and calling Muslims “naive” – ​​is authentic, but alleged that it was selectively edited from a 51-minute recording. The admission, which follows PM Narendra Modi’s comments on TMC circulating AI-generated clips, has handed Trinamool fresh ammunition against the BJP ahead of the Bengal elections. Kabir said, “The video is true, but only 19 minutes of the 51-minute conversation is shown. I was talking to two persons – one claimed to be a sadhu from Siliguri, the other claimed to be a journalist from Delhi. I have the entire video to support my claims.” He alleged that TMC’s Abhishek Banerjee had organized a sting operation in which a person “disguised as a Maharaja” and a Delhi-based journalist were sent to trap him. The 19-minute clip, titled ‘The Reality of HK’, has not been independently verified. “I will identify them and take legal action,” he said. I have six lawyers ready.” He said, adding that the recording took place on December 19, 2025, at his flat in Berhampur. “There is no footage of me meeting any BJP member – neither Modi, nor Shah,” he said. TMC was quick to use this admission to target BJP. “When Kabir himself has said that the video is real, why did the PM call it AI-generated?” a party official asked. CM Mamata Banerjee pounced on the admission. “You are seeing how a deal worth Rs 1,000 crore has been made to divide Hindus and Muslims. The person in the video is saying it is real – how will it be covered up now?” he asked at a rally in Onda, Bankura. This controversy has already caused political damage. AIMIM broke its alliance with Kabir’s AUJP within a day of the video surfacing, saying it “cannot be associated with statements where the integrity of Muslims is questioned” and announced that it would contest the Bengal elections independently. The alliance announced a few weeks ago envisaged AJUP contesting 182 out of 294 seats in Bengal and AIMIM 17 seats.
