New Delhi: The road to the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup in Australia was supposed to be the moment when Indian women’s football would finally come out of the shadows and take the much-awaited leap forward. With six World Cup spots at stake, the Blue Tigresses felt the pulse of history beneath their studs. Instead, the campaign, with three defeats in three games, could be described as a sequence of administrative gambles followed by heartbreak on the field, leaving players to pick up the pieces of a shattered dream.Sangeeta Basfour, a midfield general who saw the nightmare up close while playing all three matches in the tournament earlier this month, tries to hide the deep collective grief behind the rhetoric of professional development.

EXCLUSIVE: Where did India go wrong in the Women’s Asia Cup? Aditi Chauhan decodes

“None of us are satisfied with our performance because the results did not go our way,” he said in an exclusive interview with TimesofIndia.com. “The coach had a lot of expectations from me. But personally, I feel I couldn’t give my best or support the team the way I should have… but to play on such a big stage against top players. That in itself was a big achievement for us.”

An approach that left more questions than answers

The unrest in Perth began long before the opening whistle. In a move that surprised many observers, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) opted for the overseas-better approach just weeks before the tournament. He demoted home coach Crispin Chhetri, who had orchestrated the famous qualification win over Thailand, to an assistant role. In his place came Costa Rican tactician Amelia Valverde, who had two World Cup qualifications on her resume, and signed a frantic, short-term two-month contract. On paper the preparations looked seamless as the team spent nearly 40 days in Antalya, Turkey to test themselves against European clubs.

Basfour recalled, “Honestly, our preparation was very good.” “We played against teams from Ukraine and Russia… against Champions League-level club teams. We won almost every match.” But as the team moved from the Mediterranean air of Türkiye to the high-pressure pressure of Australia, cracks began to appear.“As the matches were getting closer, we were getting more excited but also a little nervous. Until we played the first match, we couldn’t really predict how our performance would be. No matter how much you prepare, there is always uncertainty on such a big stage,” the 29-year-old admitted. “We became more serious after the first match. We still regret that we feel like our World Cup opportunity was taken away from us.”

a coaching carousel

The AIFF have confirmed that they will not be extending Valverde’s contract, showing that their stop-gap solution to success has become useless.According to several reports, his short-lived tenure was marred by tactical instability, with the AIFF Technical Committee recently describing his tenure as “disappointing”. He cycled through three different formations in three group games. The results on the field were disastrous, including three defeats, zero points and a crushing 11–0 defeat at the hands of eventual champions Japan.

Basfour feels there was little time for Valverde. “She’s a very good coach. “If she had more time with us, she would have understood us even better,” the West Bengal-born midfielder told this website. But he still tried and talked to everyone, motivating us both on and off the field. There wasn’t really any problem.”Despite the 11–0 scoreline against Japan, Basfour refused to accept that the margin was too big for Indian football. Looking at her other opponents, Vietnam and Chinese Taipei, she insists the difference was not quality, but execution and perhaps a little luck. “If you look at teams like Vietnam or Chinese Taipei, there is no big difference. We could have done better. We fought hard as a team. We were also unlucky, many of our shots hit the post,” he admitted.“If we had a longer camp and played more friendly matches, it would have helped.”

What’s next?

The road to salvation now leads to Nairobi. In April 2026, the Blue Tigresses will take part in the FIFA series, facing hosts Kenya at the Nyayo National Stadium. It is a chance to overcome various opposition including Malawi and the Australian side which recently hosted the continental crisis.

It would have helped if we had a longer camp and played more friendly matches.

There is optimism, however, tempered by appeals for structural change. For Basfour, the nightmare in Australia was not just about tactical formations or foreign versus domestic coaches; It was about the daily reality of Indian sports. Also read: $256K, what’s next for Nepal? Competitive cricket, infrastructure boost and a helping hand from India“Improving grassroots development and extending the duration of the women’s league will help a lot,” she said.“When players go back home, they don’t always get proper training or facilities. If the league runs longer, the players will improve and the national team will perform better.”

Saudi Arabia's Jeddah hospital achieves medical feat: Robot takes over pediatric surgery to treat rare Hirschsprung disease

Doctors in Saudi Arabia have performed a complex robotic surgery on a two-year-old boy suffering from Hirschsprung’s disease, a rare condition that affects the functioning of the intestine. The baby, weighing about 10 kilograms, was treated at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center (KFSH) in Jeddah. Hirschsprung’s disease occurs when part of the colon does not have the nerve cells needed to move waste through the body. This can cause severe constipation and, in severe cases, intestinal blockage. To treat this, doctors performed a procedure known as the Soave pull-through. In simple terms, it involves removing the part of the colon that is not functioning properly and connecting the healthy part so that the intestine can function normally again. It is not easy to perform this surgery on small children. The space inside a baby’s pelvis is very small, and important nerves, muscles and blood vessels are located close to the area to be operated on. Any mistake can affect the way the intestine works in the long run. This is where robotic assistance played an important role. The robotic system gave surgeons a clear view and allowed them to operate with greater control and precision. This made it easier to handle the delicate tissues and carry out the procedure safely. This case highlights how advanced technology is being used to handle difficult medical situations, especially in children where surgery is more sensitive.KFSH said the process reflects its continued focus on using modern medical technologies to improve treatment outcomes. The hospital has also received several global recognitions. It was ranked 1st in the Middle East and North Africa and 12th worldwide among the Top 250 Academic Medical Centers for 2026. It has also been named the most valuable healthcare brand in Saudi Arabia and the wider region for 2025 by Brand Finance.Additionally, KFSH has been listed among the World’s Best Hospitals 2025, World’s Best Smart Hospitals 2026 and World’s Best Specialty Hospitals 2026 by Newsweek.

Supreme Court flags 'menace' of AI-generated fake verdicts, cautions lawyers

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday expressed concern over the growing “menace” of lawyers and litigants citing non-existent judgments generated by artificial intelligence, warning that the practice is becoming increasingly common in courts.A bench of Justices Rajesh Bindal and Vijay Bishnoi said such cases are not limited to India, but are being seen globally, and stressed the need for greater caution while relying on AI-assisted content, news agency PTI reported. These comments came after the top court set aside certain observations made by the Bombay HC in a case involving a company director.“As a matter of grace, we delete the observations… However, the fact is that this menace is now prevalent in all courts, not only in India but all over the world,” the bench said. Everyone needs to be careful about it,” he said, adding that the issue is already under consideration at the judicial side. The high court, in its order, had said that the written submissions were prepared using AI tools like ChatGPT, citing tell-story formatting markers and repetitive phrases. It also pointed to a referred case that could not be located in the legal records.Despite the efforts of the court and its law clerks, the cited decision could not be located, leading to it being called a waste of “precious judicial time”.The High Court had underlined that while AI tools can aid in legal research, the parties bear the responsibility to verify the accuracy and authenticity of any content produced using such technologies.

Akshay Kumar talks about 'Waqt, a very important film in my life' with Amitabh Bachchan on Wheel of Fortune

In an upcoming episode of Wheel of Fortune, the host Akshay Kumar Transformed a simple puzzle into a memorable life lesson. Akshay talked about his journey and reminded the audience that time waits for no one and the best moment to act is always now. The episode saw contestants Surbhi Minocha, Rohit Bamola and Mehak Gupta competing against each other.Akshay started the conversation with Rohit Bamola and asked if he enjoys getting ready and grooming himself. Rohit told that he was a big fan of his and used to follow a disciplined routine like him. He revealed that he likes to wake up at 5 in the morning, get ready by 8 and help his parents with work.Akshay asked Rohit who he came with and he told the names of his brother, sister-in-law, mother, father and a friend. After this Akshay confirmed Rohit’s claims with his sister-in-law Rupali. However, the story takes a fun turn. Rupali revealed that Rohit’s version of events was far from reality. He shared that he actually wakes up in the evening and spends most of his time on his phone.Akshay was surprised and turned towards Rohit and said, “What a liar he is, man. He wakes up at 6 in the evening and you say you help your parents at 8 in the morning.”This candid moment made everyone laugh out loud. Rohit’s brother jokingly admitted that Rohit has always been mischievous. Akshay jokingly suggested that Rohit should touch her feet to see how cute they were.Later in the episode, Akshay asked Rohit if he had any complaints against his brother and sister-in-law and Rohit replied that he had no complaints. The conversation then turned to Rohit’s wedding plans. Asked when he plans to get married, Rohit said, “When he finds the girl.”Akshay continued the fun and asked Rupali what kind of girl she would want for Rohit. He replied that he wanted a sweet forgotten girl for him and said that being with such a girl could help him get better. When Akshay questioned whether it would actually work, Rupali replied, “It will improve.”Akshay then shared a deeper perspective. He referenced his movie Amitabh BachchanHe said, “I will tell you a film, I had done a film, that film was a very important film for me in my life, its name was ‘Waqt’ with Amitabh Bachchan ji.”Akshay Kumar shared that there was a line in the film which said, “It’s okay, he’s a kid, he’ll improve.”After this he requested people to watch the film with their children if they have not seen it yet. He pointed out that the film teaches an important lesson – that we often delay things thinking there is still time, but time never waits for anyone. While talking to Rohit he honestly said that time does not stop for anyone and it should not be taken lightly.Talking about his life, Akshay revealed that he started working at the age of 14 because he knew he had to do something on his own, especially since studies were not his strong suit.He concluded by saying that people should not keep putting things off thinking that they will do it later. If something has to be done then it should be done today itself, otherwise it will never be done.

UAE car insurance explained: third-party vs comprehensive, which is right for you and whether it covers flood damage

UAE car insurance explained: third-party vs comprehensive, which is right for you and whether it covers flood damage
UAE car insurance: third-party or comprehensive? The Decision That Could Cost You Thousands

As car ownership continues to rise along with repair costs, extreme weather risks and high-value vehicles in the UAE, a question keeps coming up among residents: should you choose comprehensive insurance or stick to basic third-party cover? The difference is not just technical, it can mean the difference between a minor inconvenience and a major financial loss.

basic car insurance Rules in UAE: One is mandatory, the other is optional

In the UAE, you cannot legally drive without insurance but the law requires only the most basic forms:

  • Third party insurance is mandatory
  • Comprehensive insurance is optional upgrade

Without at least third-party coverage, your car cannot be registered or legally driven.

Third-party car insurance in the UAE: the legal minimum

Think of these as bare essentials.

What does third-party car insurance cover in UAE:

  • harm to another person Vehicle
  • Third party injury or death
  • Damage to public or private property

What third-party car insurance in UAE doesn’t cover:

  • damage to your own car
  • your medical Expenditure
  • Theft, fire, or natural disasters

In simple words, it protects others from you, not you from harm. That is why it is cheap and widely used for older or lower priced cars.

Comprehensive car insurance in UAE: full-spectrum protection

This is where coverage expands significantly.

What does comprehensive car insurance in UAE cover:

  • Third-party insurance covers everything
  • Damage to your own vehicle (even if it’s your fault)
  • theft, fire, vandalism
  • natural disasters (rain, Floodssandstorm)
  • Sometimes personal injury and add-ons

In simple words, it protects both you and others in most scenarios. This makes it the preferred choice for:

  • new cars
  • luxury or financed vehicle
  • Drivers looking for peace of mind

Cost difference: Why many people still choose basic car insurance cover in the UAE

The biggest deciding factor is price. Typical UAE Insurance Cost (2026):

  • Third-party: AED 450 – 2,000/year
  • Comprehensive: AED 1,200 – 5,000+/year

This is often 2-3 times more expensive, which is why budget-conscious drivers lean towards third parties but there is a trade-off:

  • low premium
  • Out of pocket risk

Side by Side Comparison –

Speciality third party insurance comprehensive insurance
legal requirement Mandatory optional
Covers losses caused to others Yes Yes
covers your own car No Yes
Theft/Fire/Natural Disasters No Yes
Cost Less High
best for old cars New/high-value cars

Recent trends in the UAE are reshaping the way residents think about insurance:

  • Rising repair costs – Modern vehicles, especially EVs and luxury cars, are expensive to fix.
  • Extreme weather risk – Heavy rainfall and flood events have made natural disaster coverage more relevant.
  • Dense urban driving – More cars on the road means more chances of an accident.

All this makes comprehensive insurance less of a luxury and more of a protection.

So, which car insurance cover should you choose in UAE?

Choose third-party car insurance cover if:

  • Your car is old or worth less
  • You want the cheapest legal option
  • You can bear the cost of repairs yourself

Choose comprehensive car insurance cover if:

  • Is your car new, financed or expensive
  • You want protection against theft or weather damage
  • You prioritize financial security over risk

Hidden risks most car drivers ignore in UAE

The problem that many residents in the UAE underestimate is that if you are at fault in an accident with third-party insurance, the insurer pays for the other person’s damage, while you pay for your repairs entirely out of your own pocket. In the UAE, this can easily go into thousands of dirhams.Car insurance in UAE is evolving from a legal checkbox to a financial strategy decision where third party insurance is for compliance while comprehensive cover is for protection. As vehicles become more expensive and climate-related risks increase, more residents are reevaluating whether saving on premiums today could cost them much more tomorrow.Remember, third-party insurance keeps you legal while comprehensive insurance keeps you safe. The real question is not which one is better, the real question is how much risk you are willing to take on UAE roads.

A simple stool test can reveal the underlying cause of chronic diarrhea. india news

साधारण मल परीक्षण से दीर्घकालिक दस्त के छिपे हुए कारण का पता लगाया जा सकता हैA new study conducted by researchers from AIIMS and other leading centers led by Dr. Govind K. Makhariya, has been published in the Indian Journal of Gastroenterology. The study finds that measuring bile acids in a single stool sample could provide a practical way to diagnose bile acid malabsorption (BAM) – a condition that is often missed because existing tests are complex and not widely available.Chronic diarrhea is often attributed to conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, but experts say a significant number of these patients may actually have BAM, which requires a different line of treatment.“Chronic diarrhea is quite common in India, affecting about 8-10% of people, and about 80% of these cases are due to functional bowel disorders such as IBS. However, a small but significant subgroup of patients may have bile acid malabsorption, which often goes undiagnosed because existing tests are complex and not widely available. With new spot stool tests, it is now possible to identify these cases more easily and treat them accordingly,” Dr. Makhariya of the Department of Gastroenterology and Human said. Nutrition, AIIMS.The study tested a method that estimates fecal bile acids (FBA) using a simple assay and identifies a clear clinical cut-off. An FBA level of 2.8 μg/g was found to accurately detect the condition with high sensitivity (89.5%) and specificity (92%), indicating strong diagnostic performance.Researchers compared healthy individuals and patients suffering from intestinal diseases, finding that those affected had significantly higher levels of bile acids. When this was applied to real-world patient groups, the results were surprising.BAM was found in approximately 21% of patients with IBS-related diarrhea or functional diarrhea. The proportion was even higher in other groups – 57% in people who had gallbladder removal and more than 54% in patients with intestinal tuberculosis. These findings suggest that a large number of patients currently treated for other causes of chronic diarrhea may have an underlying, treatable condition that is being overlooked.Doctors say that this has a direct impact on care. Without correct diagnosis, patients often continue to suffer from symptoms despite treatment, leading to frequent consultations and reduced quality of life. The biggest advantage of the new approach is its simplicity. Unlike existing diagnostic methods, which are technically demanding and limited to specialized centres, this test can be performed on a single stool sample, making it far more accessible for routine use.Experts believe widespread adoption of such testing could help identify hidden cases earlier and enable more targeted treatment.

Pentagon: Pentagon considering redirecting Ukraine-linked weapons to Middle East as Iran war puts pressure on US arms: report

File photo: US President Donald Trump with Ukrainian President Zelensky

The Pentagon is considering whether to send some weapons originally intended for Ukraine to the Middle East as the war in Iran puts pressure on U.S. stockpiles of key weapons, The Washington Post reported, citing three people familiar with the matter.

air defense interceptor Among the weapons under review

According to the report, the weapons that may be redirected include air defense interceptor missiles ordered through a NATO-backed program launched last year, under which partner countries buy US-made weapons for Kiev. The report said no final decision has been made, but such a move would underline the trade-offs facing Washington as it tries to continue military operations in the Middle East while maintaining support for Ukraine.

nato‘s PURL program is seen as a potential pressure point

The Priority Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative was established last year to keep selected US military equipment flowing to Ukraine even after the Trump administration reduced most of the Pentagon’s direct security assistance to Kiev. The program allows partner countries to purchase US weapons for Ukraine, with European allies playing a larger role in funding and arming Ukrainian forces since Trump returned to office.A NATO official responding to questions from The Washington Post did not directly say whether the alliance was aware of concerns over the potential change, but said the country “continues to contribute to PURL and equipment continues to flow to Ukraine.”According to the Washington Post, the same official said that since last summer, the initiative has supplied 75% of the missiles for Ukraine’s Patriot batteries and almost all the ammunition used in its other air defense systems.

Pentagon signals prioritization of operational needs of US and allies

In a statement cited in the report, a Pentagon spokesperson said the Defense Department would “ensure that the U.S. military and our allies and partners have everything they need to fight and win,” but did not comment further on internal deliberations.According to The Washington Post, Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States, Olga Stefanyshina, said Kiev is in touch with partners on its needs, including air defense, and understands “a period of considerable uncertainty” during the war.“Any disruptions have been minimized since the beginning of recent operations in the Middle East,” he said.

iran war Concern is increasing over US reserves

Concerns have grown as US Central Command has struck more than 10,000 targets in Iran in just four weeks of fighting. Admiral Brad Cooper, head of Central Command, said on Wednesday that the US is on track to reduce Tehran’s ability to project power beyond its borders. The report said some of the weapons most likely to be used in the conflict include Patriot and THAAD air defense interceptors, which are also important to Ukraine as it continues to face Russian missile and drone attacks. The US military has already transferred such missiles from other theaters, including Europe and East Asia, to US Central Command in the Middle East to strengthen defenses against Iranian drone and ballistic missile attacks.A person familiar with internal Pentagon calculations told The Washington Post that PURL deliveries are likely to continue, but future packages may lack some air defense capabilities as the US looks to rebuild its own stocks and those of allies in the Gulf.“The policy debate is how much you give to Ukraine,” said another person. “It’s a real lively discussion.”

Funding questions and possible diversion of NATO funds

Separately, the Pentagon informed Congress on Monday that it intended to remove about $750 million of funding provided by NATO countries through the PURL program to restore U.S. military inventories instead of sending additional aid to Ukraine, citing two U.S. officials. It remained unclear whether participating European governments fully understood how that funding was being used.According to a US official, countries have committed approximately $4 billion to Ukraine through the program. The report comes as the war in Iran is reshaping military and diplomatic calculations globally.US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday a deal to end the Iran war is close, while Tehran rejected a 15-point US ceasefire proposal and issued its own demands, launching new attacks on Israel and Gulf Arab states.Iran’s foreign minister later told state TV, “So far there have been no negotiations with the enemy and we do not plan any negotiations.”More than 1,500 people in Iran, nearly 1,100 in Lebanon, 20 in Israel and 13 US military personnel have been killed so far in the fighting.
