Net deletion due to SIR 5.2 crore (10%) in 12 States/UTs; 2 crores included in phase 2

New Delhi: Over 2 crore voters were included in 12 states and Union Territories (UTs) during the second phase of Special Intensive Revision (SIR), taking the net deletion at the start of SIR on October 27, 2025 to around 5.2 crore or 10.2% of their combined electorate of around 51 crore. Total deletions in Phase 2 states/UTs reached 7.2 crore. However, 2 crore names were included as new voters (Form 6 by first-time voters) and existing voters enrolling at a new address (Form 8). According to data received from the Election Commission, more than 6.5 crore absent, transferred, dead, doubly enrolled and ‘other’ voters were identified and removed from the voter lists of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, UP, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, TN, Goa, Puducherry, MP, Rajasthan, Kerala and Lakshadweep. Another 63.2 lakh names were removed through Form 7 (objections to inclusion in the roll) and adjudication (special for Bengal where 27.2 lakh names were removed by judicial authorities).

After roll clean-up, 45.8 crore voters are left in the rolls in 12 states and union territories

About 66.9 lakh deletions were due to death, 1.3 crore due to enrollment at multiple places, 1.3 crore found absent at registered address, 3.1 crore permanently transferred; 12.7 lakh were placed in the ‘other’ category. “After purification of the rolls, there are now 45.8 crore voters present in 12 States/UTs. The removal of more than 6.5 crore ASDDs and other voters who were in the rolls but were not voting and were at risk of fraudulent voting in their names has resulted in a pure and accurate voter list serving the purpose of SIR. This explains the highest ever turnout in Assam and Puducherry on April 9.” State-wise, the percentage of roll refinement (net refinement divided by total voters before SIR) was highest in Andaman and Nicobar Islands at 16.6%, followed by UP at 13.2%, Gujarat at 13.1% and Chhattisgarh at 11.3%. West Bengal ranks fifth among 12 states/UTs in terms of purification percentage. It is noteworthy that apart from the 27.1 lakh who were removed from the rolls of Bengal after the decision, another 6 lakh were removed on the basis of objections to their inclusion in the rolls. West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Goa recorded a net decline of 10.9%, 10.6% and 10.2% respectively, while Puducherry saw a net decline of 7% in the number of voters. States like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Kerala and Lakshadweep saw lower net extinction of 5.7%, 5.4%, 2.5% and 0.3% respectively. Of the 2 crore names added across 12 states/UTs, the highest number of names were from UP (92.4 lakh), followed by Tamil Nadu (35 lakh), Kerala (20.4 lakh), Rajasthan (15.4 lakh), Madhya Pradesh (12.9 lakh) and Gujarat (12.1 lakh).

‘SIR did a big scam to bring BJP to power’. india news

'SIR did a big scam to bring BJP to power'

Kolkata/Keshiyari: Mamata Banerjee on Saturday alleged that the Election Commission’s SIR was a “big scam” aimed at “bringing the BJP to power” in Bengal, as she warned of retaliation against those who invoked the SIR. “The names of voters are being removed indiscriminately. Remember, out of the 90 lakh voters removed, 60 lakh are Hindus and 30 lakh are Muslims. It will be proved one day that SIR was a huge scam. Those who are trying to please their masters by torturing and harassing people will get justice,” he said at a rally in Keshiari in West Midnapore. “More than 250 people have died due to the SIR exercise… Since we speak Bengali, are we not Indians? Do we need to constantly prove our citizenship?” he asked. He raised the issue of alleged targeting of Lodha and Sabar communities during SIR. He accused BJP of planning to tamper with EVMs and spread fear. She said, “It is being said that people whose names have been removed from the Bihar list will not get ration… their bank accounts will be frozen. I will not allow anything like this in Bengal.” – Dwaipayan Ghosh and Sujoy Khanra

PM Modi's announcement, 'big game' is coming to Bengal

Kolkata: PM Narendra Modi on Saturday stepped up BJP’s Bengal campaign, rejecting Trinamool Congress’s “Khela Hobe” slogan and framing the assembly elections as a fight to protect Bengal’s identity, while he promised to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) to end “appeasement politics”. Modi said, “You have played too much” and those who “played for too long” will now have to face accountability. “Everyone will be accounted for.” Impressed by the crowd size at Katwa, he said it was a sign of a “big game” to come in Bengal. Addressing back-to-back rallies in Burdwan, Murshidabad and South Dinajpur, Modi accused the TMC of relying on “infiltrators” to create vote banks and intimidate majority groups. “Let UCC be implemented here; appeasement will stop forever. Bengal will make real changes this time,” he said, reiterating the manifesto promise issued by Union Minister Amit Shah to enact the law within six months of taking charge. Modi described governance in Bengal as dominated by “syndicate raj”. Linking corruption to the exodus of companies, loss of jobs and exodus of youth, he said, “Here there is syndicate government and the government is syndicate.” In Jangipur in Muslim-majority Murshidabad, Modi focused on identity and demographic change. He said, “TMC wants to use the votes of infiltrators to form a government of infiltrators. We will not allow Bengalis to become a minority in Bengal.” Responding to CM Mamata Banerjee’s criticism that the BJP will not fulfill its promises, Modi defended his party’s record. Citing support prices for jute and assurance that welfare schemes would continue, he said, “BJP keeps its promises.” “BJP will stop nothing but Trinamool’s loot.” He pledged that the first cabinet meeting of the BJP government will approve the implementation of Ayushman Bharat in Bengal. Seeking to reassure the Matua and Namasudra communities affected by the SIR, Modi said they are protected by the Constitution and promised to expedite the citizenship processes after assuming office. He also praised the Election Commission for violence-free voting in Assam and Kerala, citing the huge turnout on Thursday. Modi warned voters against “AI-generated disinformation”, alleging that Trinamool may release fabricated videos as polling approaches. “There is a conspiracy, and you need to be careful. Trinamool is panicking and as the elections approach, it will use conspiracies. We have seen this in Assam and Puducherry – rumors will be spread based on AI-generated videos. Don’t fall into that trap,” he said.

Rare Modi-Rahul conversation breaks the internet. india news

Rare Modi-Rahul conversation breaks the internet

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi And Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul GandhiThey exchanged pleasantries and had a brief conversation at an event on Saturday, which is rare in the otherwise cold and indifferent equation between them. It is not often that Rahul often joins ministers and senior officials like Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to greet the PM at memorial events held in the Parliament complex, but on Saturday he did so at an event to pay tribute to reformer Jyotirao Phule. As he accepted everyone’s greetings, Modi was seen asking Rahul something and then the two talked for some time while waiting for Vice President CP Radhakrishnan and President Draupadi Murmu. The exchange went viral on social media and sparked interest in political circles. There were suggestions that Modi inquired about the health of Rahul’s mother Sonia Gandhi, who was recently admitted to hospital. However, there was no official statement on what conversation took place between them. Rahul has not often attended such events in the past and the BJP has often accused him of not giving due respect to state programs and high dignitaries. In turn, the Congress has also often alleged that the government does not accept the protocol because of the LOP. Not surprisingly, the pleasantries between Modi and Rahul created a stir. The government has announced a two-year program to commemorate Phule’s 200th birth anniversary next year. To oversee the nationwide commemorations running from 11 April 2026 to 11 April 2028, the government has constituted a high-level committee under the chairmanship of the PM.

No forum to deal with misdeeds of arbitrators: Supreme Court judge india news

No forum to deal with misdeeds of arbitrators: Supreme Court judge

New Delhi: Supreme Court Justice BV Nagarathna on Saturday said mediation and arbitration have become an integral part of a modern and responsive justice system and should not be seen merely as an alternative to traditional litigation. However, he highlighted the absence of a forum to deal with complaints against arbitrators who, in most cases, are retired judges whom courts are reluctant to remove. “There is no forum where a complaint against an arbitrator’s misconduct is made except the court. And courts are very wary of changing arbitrators because many arbitrators are former judges, chief justices,” he said. He emphasized that for arbitration proceedings to be successful, there must be trust among the litigants and allegations of bias or misconduct can undermine confidence in the system. Speaking at the international conference on ‘Arbitration in the Age of Globalization’ organized by the Arbitration Council of India in the national capital, Justice Nagarathna said there has been a marked shift from traditional methods of dispute resolution towards alternative mechanisms such as mediation and arbitration. He said, “Disputes are not just about legal questions, but also about social, commercial and relational questions, which may require a more voluntary resolution than a court decision. Therefore, arbitration and mediation are not mere alternatives to litigation, but integral parts of a modern and responsive justice system.” Justice Nagarathna said arbitration has emerged as the most preferred method to resolve cross-border commercial disputes due to its advantages such as neutral forums, procedural flexibility, confidentiality and party autonomy.

6.5 years after partition, Jammu and Kashmir removed from Aadhaar records of Ladakh residents. india news

6.5 years after partition, Jammu and Kashmir removed from Aadhaar records of Ladakh residents

Srinagar: Even after six years of bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories, people of Ladakh continue to show Jammu and Kashmir instead of Ladakh in their Aadhaar records. This has finally changed now. Residents of Ladakh can now check their identity in Aadhaar records with ‘Ladakh’ replacing ‘Jammu and Kashmir’ in the ‘State’ field. The long pending public demand was addressed after the intervention of Ladakh LG Vinay Kumar Saxena, who directed the UT administration to resolve the issue at the earliest. After this the administration took up the matter Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). The long awaited reform has now been successfully implemented.According to officials, the wrong representation in Aadhaar records was causing a lot of inconvenience to the people of Ladakh. They were facing difficulty in using Aadhaar as a valid document for identity and address while availing various services, besides facing problems related to Aadhaar linked records and progress reports. To solve the problem, the UT administration, in coordination with UIDAI, devised a mechanism to update the ‘State’ field centrally. Instead of requiring each resident to visit Aadhaar centers individually for correction, the records were updated based on pin codes specific to Ladakh. These PIN codes were verified in coordination with the Department of Posts and shared with UIDAI.Officials said residents can now easily download their updated e-Aadhaar from the UIDAI portal, and those who want to get a PVC Aadhaar card can order it online by paying a nominal fee.In a statement, LG Saxena said the development will greatly benefit the residents of Ladakh by removing procedural hurdles and enabling seamless access to services. “Ensuring that the identity of Ladakh is accurately reflected in official records is not only an administrative necessity, but also a matter of identity and convenience for our people,” he said.

Tamil Nadu Assembly elections: DMK's Stalin sets target of 200 seats, attacks BJP's 'armed' women quota pitch

New Delhi: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed optimism over the victory of the DMK-led alliance in the state assembly elections. He claimed that they would be able to get more than 200 seats in the elections, while he also attacked the BJP for trying to use the women’s quota as a “weapon” against the opposition. He also targeted AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami, the Enforcement Directorate and the Centre.Stalin said the secular progressive alliance, which includes Congress, Left parties and VCK, will sweep the 234-member assembly and form the Dravidian Model 2.0 government. He claimed that five years of rule and welfare measures had strengthened public support for the DMK. “People have shown a lot of love and trust in my party and with their support, SPA will win more than 200 seats and form the Dravidian Model 2.0 government,” he said.

women quota controversy

The Chief Minister said the Central government was not serious about implementing reservation for women and accused the BJP-led Center of trying to use it to counter the opposition ahead of the delimitation process. “The central government is not worried about implementing reservation for women. If their concerns were genuine, they could have done it immediately. Instead of doing so, the BJP-led Center is thinking of using it as a weapon to deal with the opposition and conduct a delimitation exercise based on population,” he said.He said that women’s reservation should be implemented immediately without linking it to delimitation. Stalin also said that Tamil Nadu had first raised its voice on the delimitation issue after realizing that the state could be affected, and argued that states with successful population-control measures should not be penalized.

EPS attack

Stalin rejected Palaniswami’s allegation that his family was a “power centre”, calling it imaginary and aimed at diverting attention from the DMK government’s record. She also hit back at the AIADMK chief over his criticism on women’s safety and law and order, saying the Pollachi sexual harassment case was a reminder of the failures of the previous regime. He alleged that the AIADMK lacks ideology or principles and said that the Delhi BJP serves as its headquarters. On delimitations, he accused Palaniswami of being “dumb” and said the AIADMK leader was effectively supporting the BJP’s position.

ED and wellness claims

Stalin described the ED’s actions in the TASMAC and sand-mining cases as a “centre-staged, ED-produced drama” and accused the agency of becoming a “slave”. He said the alleged TASMAC scam and illegal sand mining cases were politically scripted. He also defended his government’s welfare schemes, saying the monthly entitlement of Rs 1,000 to women and the breakfast scheme for school children were among the initiatives closest to his heart. He said the Mahila Adhikar Yojana would be increased to Rs 2,000 in the next term, while the breakfast program would be extended to Class 8.This comes amid the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections scheduled for April 23, with counting scheduled for May 4. Stalin said the DMK-led alliance remains strong since 2019 and will also do well in Puducherry, which went to polls on April 9.

UCC enters Bengal battlefield: PM Modi vows to implement civil code; Mamta said ‘will cancel’ india news

Mamata vs PM Modi, Amit Shah on UCC promise: Rights debate takes center stage in Bengal campaign

New Delhi: The uniform civil code (UCC) has emerged as a flashpoint in the West Bengal assembly elections. On one hand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed to implement it if BJP comes to power. At the same time, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has promised that if her party gets majority at the Centre, she will repeal this law.Addressing a rally in Jangipur in Murshidabad district, PM Modi said the BJP’s manifesto, released a day earlier, outlines a roadmap to introduce UCC as part of a broader effort to end “appeasement politics” in the state. The Prime Minister positioned the proposal as an integral part of governance and national security, while also linking it to the BJP’s broader election pitch in Bengal.

Mamata vs PM Modi, Amit Shah on UCC promise: Rights debate takes center stage in Bengal campaign

At the rally, PM Modi said, “The security of the country is paramount for us. BJP resolves to implement UCC in West Bengal to end the politics of appeasement forever.”His comments come after the BJP in its ‘Sankalp Patra’ promised to implement the UCC along with a series of governance and security reforms within six months of government formation. The party has framed the election as a defining moment for Bengal’s political direction, alleging corruption, lawlessness and demographic change under the Trinamool Congress (TMC).In response to the ‘Sankalp Patra’, the Bengal CM opposed the implementation of the Civil Code Bill. Addressing a gathering at Keshiyari in West Medinipur district, Banerjee accused the BJP of pushing the resolution without consensus and warned that it would be reversed if political equations change at the Centre.Speaking at the rally, he said, “They have talked about UCC (Uniform Civil Code) in the manifesto. I will strongly oppose this. They are in majority today, so they will pass the bill. Tomorrow when they will not be in majority, we will cancel the bill. “As long as they remain, free and fair elections are not possible.”Banerjee also raised concerns over the timing of electoral processes and policy and alleged that major decisions are being pushed through without debate during the ongoing election cycle. He said, “Elections are going on and in the meantime they are bringing the delimitation bill in Parliament. There was no debate on this. The reason behind this is that they want to divide Bengal and conduct NRC here. I repeat it, BJP will go away one day very soon.”Expanding her attack, Banerjee criticized the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, alleging manipulation and deletion of voters’ names. He said, “Our fight is with ‘Vanish Kumar’ (referring to CEC Gyanesh Kumar). SIR is a huge scam. This is not a SIR but an attempt to bring BJP to power.” This is a name removal scam. 90 lakh names have been removed.”He further alleged attempts to target him politically, saying, “Two false affidavits were filed to cancel my candidature from Bhabanipur. They could not do it, but imagine if they can do it against me, what they can do against others.”

Should implementation of the UCC involve broad public consent?

On its part, the BJP has doubled down on its campaign narrative, with the PM accusing the TMC of relying on “infiltrators”, promoting corruption and failing to maintain law and order. He also alleged that the violence during Ram Navami processions in the state is in contrast to the peaceful celebrations elsewhere in the country.Assembly elections in West Bengal are to be held on April 23 and 29, while counting of votes is on May 4.

CBFC denies role in 'Jana Nayakan' leak, calls claims baseless

New Delhi: The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on Saturday rejected claims that Tamil film “Jana Nayagan” was leaked from its system, calling them “baseless and misleading” and saying its certification process follows a secure, access-controlled protocol. This clarification comes amid the controversy over the alleged online leak of the film in high-definition format, which has sparked outrage among fans and industry stakeholders.Explaining its process, the CBFC said that all films submitted for certification are secured through a Key Delivery Message (KDM) mechanism, with password-protected access strictly controlled by the producer or filmmaker. “Without a valid KDM, the content cannot be accessed or viewed,” officials said, underlining that the board does not retain independent access once the Digital Cinema Package (DCP) is handed over.According to the CBFC, the DCP of “Jan Nayagan” was formally handed over to the applicant in Mumbai on March 17 with due acknowledgement, and since then he has remained with them, with the possibility of any violation being ruled out at its end.The controversy comes after reports that the big budget film, starring Vijay, had surfaced online as a brief five-minute clip before turning into a full-length leak on piracy websites. The leaked footage reportedly included key sequences such as the title introduction and parts of the climax, raising concerns about internal security lapses within the production or distribution chain.Director H Vinoth urged the audience not to stream the leaked content, saying that each scene represents the effort of hundreds of people. Several industry voices reiterated the appeal, calling for restraint and strict enforcement against piracy. The incident has also sparked calls for swift legal action, with fans demanding accountability and stricter security measures. The makers are understood to be exploring options to reduce losses, including pushing back the release timeline.
