Suvendu Adhikari, Samik Bhattacharya or Dilip Ghosh? What did Amit Shah say on BJP’s Bengal CM face?

Addressing a press conference after releasing the BJP’s manifesto for the Bengal elections, Shah accused Mamata Banerjee’s party of “political conspiracy”.“You don’t know the capabilities of Mamata Banerjee. She can make 2,000 such videos. Humayun Kabir and BJP are like the North Pole and the South Pole. “We can never be together,” news agency ANI quoted Shah as saying. The Union Home Minister said the BJP would prefer to sit in the opposition for 20 years rather than forging an alliance with Humayun Kabir, who made headlines by promising to build Babri Masjid in Bengal.Amit Shah said, “Instead of sitting with those who talk about building Babri Masjid in Bengal, we would prefer to sit in opposition for 20 years.”Kabir also denied the allegations and described the video as fabricated and created through artificial intelligence.“I have not made any agreement with anyone. The clip circulated by Trinamool Congress does not show who was sitting in front of me or in what context the comment was made,” he said.He also tried to turn the tables on the ruling party by invoking this narad sting case.“Firhad Hakim and Saugata Roy were seen taking money in the Narada video. What happened to that case?”. he asked.Kabir had threatened to go to court against this on Thursday TMC General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee and Minister Firhad Hakim if failed to prove the allegation of deal worth crores of rupees.Despite dismissing the controversy, Kabir made it clear that he has no intention of backing down from the election fight. He said, “I am born alone and will fight alone. I will not step back from the fight I have started.”The controversy started with a purported 19-minute video circulated by the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Thursday, which it claimed showed Kabir referring to a secret agreement with the BJP.In the video, whose authenticity PTI could not independently verify, a man resembling Kabir was reportedly heard claiming to be close to opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The man was also heard saying that he was ready to go to “any extent” to remove Mamata Banerjee from power and that he had received Rs 200 crore in advance as part of a larger arrangement of Rs 1,000 crore.Citing the video, TMC alleged that Kabir’s anti-Mamata stance and his efforts to form a Muslim political front were part of a secret BJP strategy to divide minority votes in key districts like Murshidabad, Malda, North Dinajpur and Birbhum. However, the BJP worked quickly to distance itself from Kabir.

Delhi Chief Minister advocates women's reservation in legislature, joins signature campaign in DU

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday participated in a signature campaign at the Faculty of Arts of Delhi University (DU) in support of the Nari Shakti Vandan Act (Women’s Reservation Act), where she highlighted the need to increase women’s participation in governance and policy making.Speaking on the Act, Gupta said, “I often wonder why we all need this reservation. Every person, every woman, every daughter may not be able to get here on their own through normal courses. But today, women must play a much bigger role in running this country, in administration, in policy-making.” Gupta said meaningful change can only be achieved when women are placed in decision-making positions, enabling them to address issues that directly impact society, families and their own lives. She highlighted the initiatives of Delhi Government like Lakhpati Bitiya and Anmol schemes and described them as the result of sensitive and inclusive policy-making aimed at women empowerment and strengthening social security. The event featured women’s leadership and equal representation, with messages such as “It’s time for women to lead”, and “Empowered women, prosperous nations”.Gupta said, “I believe that when women come forward, become MLAs, ministers and chief ministers, only then will it be possible to bring about change in the system.”Describing the law as a historic step, the Chief Minister thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for its passage and said the law advances the objective from “Beti Bachao” (protecting women) to “Beti Badhao” (empowering women). She said, “Through this platform, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the Prime Minister for the great effort he has made to introduce this law. He made an effort to bring every political party on one platform, recognizing the magnitude of the revolution in our country.”Gupta said the demand for greater political representation for women is decades old. Tracing its roots to 1931, he said the law enacted in 2023 reflects a long and persistent struggle, adding that it is now a collective responsibility to ensure its effective implementation. He urged the youth to actively support this initiative and help turn it into a mass movement and said that true democratic strength lies in equal participation in decision making.Expressing confidence in the impact of the law, Gupta said it will redefine political representation in the country and help build a stronger, more balanced and progressive democracy. After the campaign, Gupta had an informal interaction with students and women faculty members at a tea stall on the campus, where he heard their views, experiences and suggestions. He said that such open and direct communication between public representatives and citizens makes policy-making more effective and people-centric.The Chief Minister wrote on Twitter, “This signature campaign and the enthusiasm of the students and women on campus for women’s reservation is a message in itself… The steps taken in this direction in the Parliament on April 16 will give new direction and new confidence to the dreams, struggles and aspirations of crores of mothers, sisters and daughters of the country.”He stressed that this step towards one-third representation in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies will give new strength to the daughters of the country.

The Congress chief also questioned the timing of the special Parliament session scheduled from April 16 to 18 and alleged that it was aimed at gaining political mileage. “The Modi government is calling Parliament meetings with the sole intention of scoring political points and is keen to pass the constitutional amendment bill in a hurry,” Kharge said.He said the proposed amendments could have a significant impact on India’s electoral system and therefore required “very thorough deliberations”. Kharge said, “Based on the information we have received so far, the government wants to implement women’s reservation from the 2029 elections… It wants to increase the number of seats in the Lok Sabha from 543 to 816.”Expressing concern over the delimitation process, he said, “This delimitation proposal will have serious consequences. 'Forced into Ukraine war': Supreme Court asks Center to respond to habeas corpus petition of 26 Indians stranded in Russia

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday asked the Central government to respond to a habeas corpus petition seeking the safe return of 26 Indian citizens allegedly stranded in Russia and forced to fight in the war against Ukraine.A bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Vipul Pancholi issued notice to the Center and asked it to respond within a week.

Citing messages received from those trapped, lawyers for the families said, “We are trapped in Russia. We are unwillingly waging a war against Ukraine for a foreign state.” Responding to this, Mehta told the court that the matter would be investigated and asked for time. The bench took note of this and said that it had already asked the government to look into the issue. The plea filed by family members said the 26 Indians had traveled to Russia on valid visas after being promised jobs by recruitment agents, some as tourists, some as students. But once there, their passports were taken away, their movements were restricted and they were intimidated and pushed to join military units attached to the Russian armed forces. The families said the last messages they received, mostly between September and October 2025, showed they were in or near active conflict areas such as Kupyansk, Selidov, Makiivka and Chelyabinsk. They had expressed fear and said that they could not leave the areas where they were deployed. In many cases, contact has since been lost, and families do not know their current status or whereabouts. The petition also said that despite repeated requests to authorities including the Ministry of External Affairs, the Indian Embassy in Moscow, the Home Ministry and state governments, the families have not received clear information or effective help. The petition cited Article 32 of the Constitution to argue that it is the duty of the government to protect Indian citizens even outside the country, especially when they cannot protect themselves. It also raised concerns about illegal recruitment networks that target vulnerable people with false job promises and send them abroad.

Cash recovery controversy: Justice Yashwant Verma resigns amid impeachment process; what is the matter about

New Delhi: Amid the cash recovery controversy and the impeachment process, Justice Yashwant Verma submitted his resignation to the President on Friday. This comes after the controversy over the alleged discovery of unaccounted cash and the impeachment proceedings initiated against him in Parliament, ANI reported. After the allegations came to light, Justice Verma of Allahabad High Court was transferred from Delhi High Court. He was sworn in on April 5 last year and was later placed under a Supreme Court-led in-house investigation, which recommended further action. In his letter to the President dated April 9, Justice Verma said he did not want to burden the ‘honourable office’ of the President for reasons that “compel” him to resign. “With deep sorrow, I am tendering my resignation as judge of the Allahabad High Court with immediate effect,” he said in the letter.

What is the matter about?

The case centers on allegations that unaccounted cash was recovered after a fire broke out in a store room of Justice Verma’s official residence on March 14.Fire tenders found sufficient amount of cash in the premises to control the fire. The judge was not present at the residence at that time.Following this incident, the Supreme Court initiated an in-house investigation, the findings of which led to impeachment proceedings in Parliament. The Speaker of the Lok Sabha accepted the resolution signed by 146 MPs and constituted a three-member committee to investigate the allegations. The panel included Justice Amit Kumar, Justice Maninder Mohan Srivastava and Bibi Acharya.During the last hearing, the Supreme Court had questioned why Justice Verma did not initially challenge the in-house investigation process and later participate in it before raising objections.Justice Verma had argued that the proceedings were unconstitutional and challenged both the findings of the investigation and the recommendation to initiate impeachment by the then Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna.
