'Bengal welcomes tourists with open arms': TMC taunts Amit Shah over fish, meat menu ahead of 15-day visit

New Delhi: Days after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said the Bharatiya Janata Party would ban Bengali food habits, including fish and meat, if voted to power, the Trinamool Congress on Thursday stepped up its attack against Union Home Minister Amit Shah ahead of his 15-day visit to the poll-bound state. In a social media post on Twitter, TMC said Bengal welcomes tourists with open arms and recommended non-vegetarian dishes of West Bengal for them to try.

Shah urged voters before the elections to “go to Mamata’s house and defeat her.”

“Amit Shah has announced his decision to spend 15 days in Bengal. Nice. Bengal welcomes tourists with open arms. Stay as long as you want. And don’t miss out on some of our best cuisine,” the party said.“We highly recommend: Muri Ghonto, Pabda Macher Jhal, Ilish Bhapa, Chingri Malai Curry, Bhetki Paturi, Kosha Mangsho. Have a nice rest!” it added. This is in line with TMC’s campaign pitch, which presents the BJP as out of touch with the cultural traditions of Bengal. The controversy started when senior TMC leaders, including Mamata Banerjee, criticized it as a BJP-backed move against non-vegetarian food habits. The comment was linked to the Bihar government’s recent order regulating open sale of meat.Addressing a rally, Banerjee had said, “I have received a report about the Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar saying that fish and meat cannot be sold in the open market. This is anti-people and condemnable. Can everyone sell meat and fish in shopping malls? What will happen to the majority of people selling fish and meat on the road? What about their livelihood? Such politics is condemnable.”“If BJP comes to power, they will ban meat and fish in Bengal. I saw the Deputy CM of Bihar saying that fish and meat cannot be sold in the open market. Only those who have a license can sell meat indoors. So will everyone sell meat and fish in shopping malls? Only a few people have the economic power to do so. Most of the fish vendors sell fresh fish on the streets here. This is how they earn their bread. I condemn this politics,” she further alleged.Meanwhile, West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said people in Bengal are free to eat food of their choice and clarified that the party only opposes the open sale of beef.Responding to the allegations, Bhattacharya said, “People in Bengal will eat whatever they want. Bengal will have its own fish and meat,” rejecting TMC’s claims of a proposed ban on open sale of fish and meat in the neighboring state.Elaborating on the Bihar directive, he said the BJP has not proposed any kind of blanket ban. “They can never say such a thing. Why should they say that? No one will accept it. TMC is twisting the comments,” he said.Elections for 294 seats in West Bengal will be held in two phases – April 23 (152 constituencies) and April 29 (142) – with results to be declared on May 4, in what is expected to be a tough fight between TMC and BJP.

Congress, Left parties are misleading the people of Kerala: Rijiju fcra bill

As the protests were led mainly by members from Kerala and Tamil Nadu, Rijiju said the Congress and Left parties were misleading the people of the poll-bound state Kerala. While the BJP is wooing Christians, especially in the electoral state of Kerala, where they constitute over 18% of the population, the government’s decision to move slowly on the FCRA bill due to opposition from Christian groups may be motivated by political pragmatism. While the BJP believes that amending the law through the bill is necessary to prevent its alleged misuse against the “national interest”, the party has been receptive to the demands of Christian groups in the past, as seen in the prompt release of two Kerala nuns arrested under the anti-conversion law in Chhattisgarh last year, following fierce protests from the community. The opposition demonstrated before the Parliament proceedings began. Holding a huge banner asking the government to “stop targeting NGOs and institutions”, the MPs raised slogans and demanded the withdrawal of the bill.As most of the MPs were out for election campaigning, AICC general secretary KC Venugopal said on Monday night that Congress members had been asked to be present in the House and protest against the FCRA bill, while other parties were invited to join the protest.

Forest officials conducted post-mortem and sent viscera samples to IVRI, Bareilly for detailed examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.According to officials, the body was found about 2 km inside the forest near a drain in Bichhiya Beat area. The discovery was made by a patrol team during a night trip.Following the information shared by Forest Range Officer Ashish Gaur, senior officials including Chief Conservator of Forests H Raja Mohan, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Apoorva Dixit and other members of the team reached the spot.A three-member veterinary team led by Dr. Talha and Dr. Deepak conducted the post-mortem. They also noted that elephant herds have recently become active in the region, and aggressive behavior among elephants increases the likelihood of conflict between herds that could lead to death. In recent years, several elephant deaths have been reported in the region.

Supreme Court fines Center on petition in CISF constable's dismissal case

New Delhi: The Supreme Court rapped the government for clogging courts with unnecessary appeals and imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on a petition challenging the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s decision that had set aside the Centre’s decision to dismiss a CISF officer who helped a couple escape. The officer was removed from the job in 2010 on charges of absence from duty and collusion with the daughter of a CISF constable.

We keep shouting pendency, pendency. SC asked the government, who is the biggest litigant?

She had reportedly helped him escape and marry his friend at an Arya Samaj temple. He had approached the High Court, which directed his reinstatement with 25% arrears of salary following which the Center filed an appeal in the top court. At the beginning of the hearing on Wednesday, a bench of Justices BV Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan questioned the government for filing the appeal and said the Centre’s decision to dismiss him was disproportionate. The bench reminded that governments are contributing to increasing the pendency of cases by filing unnecessary cases like the present one and said this is a fit case for imposing penalty.“We keep shouting pendency, pendency. Who is the biggest litigant? The High Court gave him relief. Instead of giving an opinion that you will not go to the court.” Supreme CourtYou still move against him. We fail to understand why the Union of India and others have approached this court to oppose the High Court order, the bench told Additional Solicitor General SD Sanjay. The government tried to impress upon the court that it was a case of gross indiscipline as the CISF officer was involved in the eloping of a girl, but the top court upheld the High Court order holding that the girl was an adult on the date of marriage and the charge against the officer did not stand. The HC had said, “Her statement has been recorded and it shows that she got married of her own free will and was an adult on the date of marriage. Therefore, the said allegation does not sustain.”

Jammu and Kashmir government announces revival of 120-year-old power project. india news

जम्मू-कश्मीर सरकार ने 120 साल पुरानी बिजली परियोजना के पुनरुद्धार की घोषणा कीindus water treaty Postponed after the Pahalgam terror attack in April 2025, it has announced to revive the historic Mohra Power Project – a 120-year-old hydroelectric facility that has been lying defunct since the 1990s.cm Omar AbdullahThe board of directors of Jammu and Kashmir State Power Development Corporation has started the process for revival of the project, the man who also holds the charge of the power department told the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Wednesday. At a meeting held on February 9, the board approved launching a limited tender inquiry involving a transaction consultant from firms listed with the Department of Economic Affairs for the renovation, modernisation, upgrading, operation and maintenance of the 10.5MW plant.Located on the banks of the Jhelum River at Boniyar in the Uri sector of Baramulla district of north Kashmir, the Mohra Power Project was started in 1905 and is one of the oldest hydroelectric power stations in India. It was built as a run-of-the-river project and initially had a capacity of about 5 MW. The project was damaged by floods in September 1992, after which its tailrace system was affected, and power output fell to about 3 MW before operations were shut down, said former engineer Iftikhar A Drabu, who has worked on major hydropower projects in Jammu and Kashmir for more than three decades, including Kishanganga and Dulhasti. The announcement regarding the Mohra project came just days after CM Omar told the Assembly on March 27 that the pace of construction of ongoing hydropower projects across Jammu and Kashmir was being accelerated “in the backdrop of keeping the Indus Water Treaty on hold”. This appears to be part of a plan to increase generation from the current 3540 MW to about 11000 MW by 2035.“The Mohra hydroelectric power plant was constructed to support dredging operations in the Jhelum after the great flood of 1903. Its turbines were brought from Czechoslovakia,” Drabu said. The most striking feature of the project is its wooden water channel, which extends for more than 10 km along the mountains. Water was transported from Rampur to Mohra via wooden flumes to drive the turbines, Drabu said, making it a low-impact engineering feat for its time.“About nine years ago, there was a proposal to develop it as a heritage structure, but it did not go ahead,” said Hashmat A Qazi, former chief engineer of the power development department. Although its proposed capacity of about 10.5MW is modest and unlikely to significantly reduce the region’s electricity shortage, Qazi said the revival holds historical and symbolic significance, and the project has great heritage value.
