West Bengal Elections 2026: Changes in Election Commission bureaucracy spark political fight between TMC and BJP

Two IPS officers – Muralidhar Sharma and Waqar Raza – were named election observers for Tamil Nadu. Sharma is the commissioner of Bidhannagar City Police, while Raza took charge as the chief of Siliguri Commissionerate a few days ago. The five IAS officers sent to other states as election observers include JP Meena (removed from the post of Home Secretary on Sunday), Antara Acharya, Pervez Ahmed Siddiqui, P Mohan Gandhi and Priyanka Singla.Officials said that while government officials were routinely transferred before elections, the sheer number of transfers ahead of the 2026 elections made the current practice unprecedented. Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote to CEC Gyanesh Kumar asking why the Election Commission ignored the tradition of seeking a panel of three names from the state government to fill each post affected by transfers.

Earlier too, foreign mercenaries had gone to Myanmar via Mizoram. india news

Aizawl: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has asked Mizoram to verify reports that seven foreigners arrested recently in Lucknow, Kolkata and Delhi had undergone arms and drone training in Myanmar’s Chin state between January end and February, a senior officer of the police intelligence branch said on Wednesday. The official said, although evidence of anti-India activity across the border has been found through “sources” in Chin State, what is even more worrying is how easily foreigners can enter Myanmar from Mizoram through the 404 km border the two countries share.“This is made easier by the absence of effective control by Myanmar’s military junta in Chin State, where the Chin National Front, Chin National Army and other Chin militias now have influence,” he said. The Tiau River, which forms part of the border, is currently so shallow that even children can cross it on foot.Foreigners entering Mizoram require a Protected Area Permit, which is a mandatory special travel document for all foreigners except Bhutanese nationals visiting specific security sensitive areas in Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Manipur, Mizoram and parts of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.Although local authorities are tightening enforcement, those already in the state face little difficulty entering Myanmar, the intelligence official said. The NIA’s suspicion that the seven arrested foreigners – six Ukrainians and a US national – were brought in drones from Europe via Myanmar has not been confirmed. But the entry of foreign mercenaries through Mizoram to train anti-coup armed groups fighting the junta is an established pattern, the official said.Concerns over this route came to light after the arrest of retired British SAS commando Daniel Newey at Lengpui airport in Aizawl on June 19, 2024. Police found a live bullet on him. Subsequent investigations indicated that Western mercenaries had entered Myanmar through Mizoram to provide weapons training to Chin armed groups.India has announced plans to fence the entire 1,643 km long border with Myanmar, which separates the junta-ruled country from Arunachal, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram. Mizoram Police and intelligence agencies believe the move did not come a day earlier.

2 short workout sessions a week can keep you fit: study india news

New Delhi: You don’t need a gym, fancy equipment or long hours to stay fit. A large global review of studies has found that just two sessions of basic strength exercises per week can make a real difference to your health.Research published in the Journal of the American College of Sports Medicine looked at data from more than 30,000 adults and discovered that simple resistance exercises — such as squats, push-ups, lifting household weights or using resistance bands — can improve muscle strength, balance, walking speed and overall fitness. These aren’t just fitness benefits — they directly affect how easily a person can climb stairs, carry groceries, or avoid falls as they age.The biggest takeaway is how little effort is required to start seeing results. Two short sessions a week, working major muscle groups with moderate effort, are enough – there is no need to push your body to exhaustion or follow complex routines. What matters more is consistency and a gradual increase in difficulty over time.Dr Deepak Joshi, director of the Sports Injury Centre, Safdarjung Hospital, said, “Two days a week is a start, but for real gains in strength and overall health, I recommend patients to aim for at least four days. Even simple, no-equipment routines or yoga can be effective – just 20-25 minutes is enough to cover major muscle groups like the back, knees and hips.”These findings are especially important at a time when many people are sitting for long periods of time and physical activity is decreasing.Weak muscles and poor balance increase the risk of falls, joint problems, and loss of independence later in life. Dr Naman Wahal, Senior Consultant Orthopedics, Fortis Escorts, Delhi, said that in regular practice, many patients who walk regularly still show decreased muscle strength, poor balance and early overload on joints. He added that walking alone does not solve age-related muscle loss and reduced strength contributes to instability, falls and delayed recovery even in people in their 40s and 50s.Experts say almost any form of resistance exercise works, but how it’s done matters.Professor Mandeep Dhillon, director of orthopedic and sports medicine, Fortis Chandigarh, said low-grade weight training helps maintain muscle tone and improve bone mass, especially with age. He cautioned that beginners, especially older adults, should avoid suddenly performing exercises such as push-ups or squats without prior conditioning and should ideally start under supervision in a structured or group setting, while building strength work with walking as an aerobic activity.Despite the obvious benefits, very few people still include strength training in their daily routine. The study highlights this gap as a lost public health opportunity, with evidence showing that even 30–60 minutes a week of muscle-strengthening activity can substantially reduce overall mortality risk, with greater benefits when combined with aerobic exercise.

ED can’t claim ‘fundamental right’ to investigate: West Bengal tells Supreme Court india news

पश्चिम बंगाल ने सुप्रीम कोर्ट से कहा, ईडी जांच के 'मौलिक अधिकार' का दावा नहीं कर सकताSenior lawyers Shyam Divan and Kapil Sibal, appearing for Bengal and the Chief Minister, said the ED is just a government department and if one department or government is allowed to file a petition against another department or government for violation of fundamental rights, it will set a wrong precedent. He urged the Supreme Court to refer the issue to a larger five-judge bench for an official decision as it would have a wide-ranging impact on the federal structure which is one of the basic features of the Constitution. Advocates said that India cannot be turned into a unitary non-federal country.Sibal said, “No agency or officer can claim fundamental right to investigate. I do not know how the issue of fundamental right comes to the fore. Officers have statutory powers, not fundamental rights. Their solution is not in the writ petition but in the Indian Code of Justice (BNS).”Diwan said, “ED is not a judicial entity…It is nothing beyond a government department. It has no personality in itself and the Article 32 petition is not maintainable. If this is allowed then a situation may arise where Article 32 is used by one department against another, or between the Center and the states. This will completely bypass the checks and balances inherent in the constitutional framework. The Supreme Court was hearing petitions filed by the ED and its officials against the state government, the Chief Minister, the then Kolkata Police Commissioner and other officials of the state, seeking a CBI inquiry against them for not giving permission to conduct raids at various places in Kolkata, including the I-PAC office, on January 8 in connection with the money laundering probe linked to the coal ‘scam’ case. The outcome of this trial will be important as there are frequent clashes between the Center and opposition ruled states, with non-NDA states accusing the Center of using its agencies, especially the CBI and ED, for political purposes and the Center accusing the states of protecting their corrupt ministers and officials by not allowing their agencies to function.According to the ED, CM Mamata along with senior TMC leaders and state police officials arrived at the I-PAC premises being searched, clashed with its officials and allegedly took away some files and digital devices, hampering its investigation. After the incident, Bengal Police filed three FIRs against ED officials.

Meta asks HC to stay CCPA fine on selling walkie-talkies. india news

मेटा ने वॉकी-टॉकी बेचने के लिए CCPA जुर्माने पर HC से रोक लगाने की मांग कीUnlike Amazon and Flipkart, Facebook is not an e-commerce platform but merely a “notice board” over which the CCPA has no “jurisdiction”, argued senior lawyer Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Meta. He argued that Facebook neither provides any mechanism for selling and buying nor takes any commission from users. Facebook Marketplace is a free service designed specifically for natural persons to sell or exchange goods in an individual capacity; He said businesses and co-commercial sellers are not allowed to create listings. Justice Purushindra Kumar Kaurav on Wednesday listed Meta’s plea for hearing on March 25, seeking to explain how the order could be termed “without jurisdiction”. In January this year, the CCPA had found Meta to be violating the Consumer Protection Act and Information Technology rules by allowing Walkie-Talkie listings on Facebook Marketplace without mandatory disclosures.

Report says 7 oil tankers bound for China are now headed towards India India News

रिपोर्ट में कहा गया है कि चीन जाने वाले 7 तेल टैंकर अब भारत की ओर बढ़ रहे हैं

Indian flagged tanker Jag Ladki carrying crude oil imported from UAE reached Mundra port in Gujarat on Wednesday.

New Delhi: Amid the oil shortage, a tanker loaded with Russian crude, which is likely to land at New Mangalore port on Saturday, is generating a lot of interest, according to data from ship tracking website Marine Traffic. The ship, Aqua Titan, was originally headed for the Chinese port of Rizhao but diverted to India, news agency Bloomberg reported. It is unclear what caused the change, although the government said it was “unaware of such developments”.The Russian ship loaded cargo from the Baltic Sea port in late January, according to ship-tracking data.At least seven tankers carrying Russian oil have changed their destination while traveling from China to India, Bloomberg said, citing Vortexa data.Separately, the Suezmax Zouzou N is signaling India’s coin as its next destination with an estimated arrival date of March 25, ship-tracking data shows. According to Kpler, the tanker is carrying Kazakh CPC blend crude. It sailed from Novorossiysk on Russia’s Black Sea to Rzhava waters, before turning around in early March to head for India. The government has asked oil companies to buy and stockpile crude in view of the massive supply disruption caused by the blockage in the Strait of Hormuz. While India never stopped buying Russian oil, despite US claims, refiners led by Reliance Industries – the biggest beneficiary of subsidized oil – had gone slow on Rosneft and Lukoil following US sanctions. But with the US lifting the ban on high seas purchases, every country is now buying oil as per its requirement, trying to fill the gap created by the shortage of West Asian crude.India’s purchases of Russian crude rose by nearly 50% in March as refiners turned to alternative sources to overcome supply disruptions in the Persian Gulf.Special Secretary Shipping Rajesh Kumar Sinha said that of the 22 ships stranded on the western side of the Strait of Hormuz, 11 ships were carrying about 2 lakh tonnes of LNG, 16.7 lakh tonnes of crude oil and 3.2 lakh tonnes of LPG.

Gulmarg hotels withdraw HC plea after J&K govt allays fears of eviction on lease expiry

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir High Court has allowed hotels facing eviction from Gulmarg properties to withdraw their petition on expiry of their lease after the UT government assured the court that it is ready for a fair and viable resolution of the issue.Additional Advocate General Mohsin Qadri informed the court that if the petitioners file representations within two weeks, the competent authority will hear them before taking a decision and inform the same to each petitioner.Advocate ZA Shah, appearing for the petitioners, first approached the government seeking permission to withdraw the petition. In 2022, the LG administration introduced J&K land grant rules under the J&K Reorganization Act 2019, which prohibits extension of lease after expiry and allows any Indian citizen to auction properties under open bidding. Before the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A on August 5, 2019, land leases were limited to permanent residents of Jammu and Kashmir. Under the new rules, the leases of 55 out of 59 hotels in Gulmarg have expired, prompting hoteliers facing eviction to move the HC.Qadri told TOI that the petitioners are no longer seeking a decision before the HC, but have limited their relief to the government considering their representation. While the case was still being heard in the court, the UT administration took possession of the historic Nedous Hotel on August 3 last year, the first property to be sealed after the Gulmarg Development Authority issued a 24-hour eviction notice, although the lease had expired in 1985.Interestingly, National Conference spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq said that the party will introduce the Land Grant Bill in the Assembly next week to undo the 2022 Jammu and Kashmir land grant rules.

Helium squeeze disrupts MRI supply chain, increasing companies’ costs india news

Helium squeeze disrupts MRI supply chain, increases companies' costs

New Delhi: A gas you rarely think about is disrupting the MRI supply chain in India. Helium shortages linked to West Asia have tightened availability in India and driven up costs, increasing the risk of costly scans and delayed diagnoses.Since India is heavily dependent on imports from Qatar for non-renewable gas used to cool MRI magnets, hospitals and imaging centers are bracing for tight supplies, even as inventory remains low and global logistics have become unstable. Pawan Chaudhary, president of the Medical Technology Association of India, told TOI that with Qatar contributing almost one-third of the global supply, any sustained disruption will have a direct impact on MRI services and allied applications globally, and the early price signals are worrying. As a byproduct of natural gas processing, helium supply moves along with LNG production, so the disruption in Qatar is now making global availability difficult. Although there is no clearly visible disruption, the risks are clearly increasing. An executive at a medtech company said globalized medtech supply chains are vulnerable to prolonged volatility in West Asia and supply chain costs are rising rapidly. Additionally, since the supply of helium is naturally limited, many companies have moved towards developing helium-free MRI machines over the past few years.Hariharan Subramanian, Managing Director, Siemens Healthcare, said, “There has been limited impact on helium availability in view of the disruption due to geopolitical situation. We have already introduced helium free MRI with active adoption of DryCool technology. “This helium-efficient approach reduces gas dependency and minimizes service disruptions.” According to Arjun Arunachalam, founder of Bengaluru-based medtech startup VoxelGrids, although helium prices are around $80 per cubic meter in some markets, our company remains untouched because we manufacture helium-free imaging systems. Furthermore, the impact of the conflict has also spread to the domestic medical device industry, with manufacturers warning of possible shortages of essential hospital consumables including IV bags and lines, urine bags, cannulae, syringes as early as next month. With barely 15-20 days of inventory, manufacturers have warned of disruption in supplies to hospitals. The pressure has increased due to shortages of industrial gas used in boilers and rising energy costs, forcing companies to rely on more expensive diesel or electricity alternatives.
