Former judges, diplomats complain of bias in USCIRF religious freedom report india news

New Delhi: A group of 275 former judges, bureaucrats, diplomats and armed forces veterans have objected to the recent report of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), calling it “disturbing” and lacking balance. In a joint statement on March 21, the signatories questioned the methodology and findings of the USCIRF report, arguing that assessments of religious freedom should be based on long-term demographic trends rather than “selective or episodic narratives”.Citing census data, the statement said the minority population in India has remained stable or increased over the decades, while the Hindu population in Pakistan and Bangladesh has declined since partition. According to the signatories, such trends show that “the overall ecosystem in India has not generated the kind of sustained demographic contraction… that would indicate systemic oppression.”The group criticized what it called a recurring trend by USCIRF to negatively portray Indian institutions and organizations like the RSS without sufficient broad-level evidence. It states that criticism should be based on “verifiable evidence and relevant understanding”.The statement also took exception to the USCIRF recommendations to ban individuals associated with the RSS, calling them “highly motivated” and lacking credibility. The signatories include former SC judges, High Court judges, former Chief Election Commissioner, former ambassadors and over 130 retired armed forces officers.Describing India as a “strong democracy” with established judicial and parliamentary systems, the group urged the US government to review the basis of the USCIRF report and also investigate its contributors.

Rahul alleged, inflation is increasing rapidly after assembly elections India News

New Delhi: Warning of high inflation in the coming weeks, Congress warned Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said the Modi government will increase prices of petrol, diesel and LPG after the coming assembly elections, as he accused the BJP of lacking strategy and direction to manage the country’s economy. The Congress also accused the Modi government of “moral cowardice” and “betrayal of civilizational values” for its “failure to condemn” the US-Israel attack on Iran.In a post on X, Rahul said the weakening of the rupee, which is “moving towards 100” against the dollar, and the sharp rise in industrial fuel prices are a sign of rising inflation.“The government may call it ‘normal’, but the reality is: production and transportation will become more expensive, MSMEs will be hit the most, prices of everyday commodities will rise, and FII money will flow out even faster, putting more pressure on the stock market. In other words, it is sure to have a direct and deep impact on the pockets of every family.”Meanwhile, on completion of 21 days of war in West Asia, Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh said, ‘PM Modi has not been able to use his much-publicized friendship with US President Trump and Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu to bring about a ceasefire.’He asked, “Has the Modi government condoned or criticized the brutal efforts by the US and Israel to force regime change and state collapse, which could lead to civil war in Iran? The answer is no.”

Sangh supports caste census, not divisive use: RSS publicity chief Ambekar india news

संघ जाति जनगणना का समर्थन करता है, विभाजनकारी उपयोग का नहीं: आरएसएस प्रचार प्रमुख अंबेकर

Ambekar framed the RSS’s approach to caste through social harmony rather than structural confrontation (file photo)

New Delhi: Drawing a line between politics over welfare and caste data, RSS national publicity chief Sunil Ambekar said the Sangh supports the caste census but opposes its use to “divide the society”, even as he outlined the organisation’s position on key debates ranging from caste reforms and women’s participation to equation with the BJP.In a conversation with TOI, Ambekar framed the RSS’s approach towards caste as one through social harmony rather than structural confrontation. He said, “If mutual affection increases and discrimination ends, even big issues can be resolved. Without harmony, even small issues become big fights.”He said access to temples, cremation grounds, water sources and public places should be open to all, adding that RSS volunteers are engaged at the local level to address such concerns. Pointing to institutions such as Vidya Bharati, Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram, Ekal Vidyalaya and Seva Bharati as part of a broader outreach network, he said leadership is increasingly emerging from marginalized communities, including women. On women’s participation, Ambekar defended the parallel structure of the Rashtriya Sevika Samiti, saying that it reflected the RSS shakha model. At the same time, they acknowledged the need to expand the role of women, noting that participation in decision-making and outreach is increasing through a coordination mechanism called “women’s relations.” He also flagged off the centenary theme of “Kutumba Prabodhan”, which aims to encourage families to support women’s participation in public life.On caste census, he reiterated that RSS supports it for welfare, but opposes political misuse. “Democracy requires representation, but politics should not pit one community against another,” he said, arguing that social unity could counter divisive mobilization. Despite perceptions of polarization, he said, “on the ground we see unity”, citing gatherings such as the Kumbh and Ram Mandir Abhishek.Addressing the RSS-BJP equation, Ambekar said the Sangh remains a social organization focused on “man-building”, with volunteers working in all fields, including politics. He stressed that the organizations work independently, while describing India’s structure as “society-centric” in contrast to the Western state-centric model. He said that while political parties work within electoral cycles, the RSS works on a long civilizational horizon through “Lokmat Jagran”.On criticism linking Hindu nationalism to democratic backsliding, Ambekar rejected this premise, describing Hindu culture as “united” and rooted in ideas such as “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”. He argued that India’s civilizational ethos enables co-existence and strengthens democracy in a diverse society. On concerns over discrimination against people from the North-East, he said the term “racial discrimination” is incorrect, blaming historical distortions and limited dialogue for past tensions. He said the exchange programs have reduced misunderstandings and called for handling such issues sensitively. On global conflicts, Ambekar said India should be guided by peace and principles, with the government taking decisions based on strategic assessment.

Controversy over chapter on Jinnah, Jammu University constitutes inquiry committee

Jammu: The Vice Chancellor of Jammu University has constituted a high-level committee to examine the syllabus of the Political Science postgraduate course after it was involved in a major controversy over the inclusion of a chapter on the political thought of Pakistan founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah.According to an order issued by the office of the Dean of Academic Affairs, the committee has been tasked to “thoroughly review the issue and submit its report at the earliest”. The panel will be led by Professor Naresh Padha, Department of Physics, and will include heads of the departments of Philosophy, History and Sociology, and directors of the Department of Strategic and Area Studies. Assistant Registrar (Academic Affairs) will function as Member Secretary.ABVP workers had protested in the university on Friday demanding withdrawal of the chapter on Jinnah. The protesters, led by ABVP Jammu and Kashmir secretary Sannak Shrivatsa, raised slogans against the administration and warned that if the material was not taken back they would be “forced to launch a strong democratic movement throughout Jammu and Kashmir”.“Our government should take note that the Department of Political Science at Jammu University has released its syllabus for 2026-2028… and some individuals are being presented as representatives of minorities, including Sir Syed Ahmed Khan and Mohammad Ali Jinnah,” Srivatsa said. These are the same individuals who propounded the two-nation theory and played a role in Partition and “teaching about them raises serious concerns”, he said.Srivatsa further said, “We will wait and see what the committee suggests. The university authorities should understand that academic freedom does not mean neglect of national sentiments.”Professor Baljit Singh Mann, head of the department of political science, had on Friday defended the curriculum, saying the inclusion of Jinnah and others is “purely academic” and in line with the curriculum followed by universities across the country as well as UGC norms. He said, “Our aim is to present different viewpoints so that students can assess the merits and demerits and distinguish between right and wrong. This is an academic exercise, not advocacy.”When asked by media persons on Saturday, he said that he had already made his stand clear and stood by what he had said a day earlier.

Assam Assembly Elections 2026: From eviction drive to NRC debate, issues will dominate the state election campaign. india news

Assam Assembly Elections 2026: From eviction drive to NRC debate, issues to dominate state election campaign

Now with the announcement of the Assam Assembly elections schedule, several key issues like eviction, infiltration and development projects are expected to dominate the campaign rhetoric of political parties ahead of the elections.BJP currently has 64 MLAs in the 126-member Assam Assembly. Among its allies, there are nine MLAs from Assam Gana Parishad (AGP), seven from United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) and three from Bodoland People’s Front (BPF).

Crisis within Congress: How BJP’s defection strategy is reshaping Assam’s 2026 election battle

In the opposition ranks, Congress has 26 MLAs, followed by All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) with 15 MLAs. CPI(M) and an independent have one member each in the assembly.eviction: The state government’s policy of evicting alleged encroachers, many of whom are from the Muslim community, is expected to emerge as a major campaign issue, with both the ruling coalition and the opposition likely to raise it during the election campaign.Another major issue of controversy is the government’s crackdown on child marriage, which has led to several arrests and cases being registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act. The ruling coalition is expected to present these measures as a significant step towards eliminating the social menace, while the opposition is likely to accuse the government of disproportionately targeting the Muslim community, as cited by PTI.The ruling coalition is also expected to highlight its efforts to reclaim forest land, session and temple properties and other government lands from alleged encroachment. However, the opposition is likely to frame the campaign as a humanitarian crisis, pointing to the demolitions that have left many homeless and forced to live on the streets, with some losing their livelihoods.infiltration: Illegal immigration is another long-standing issue in Assam that is likely to feature prominently in the election campaign. The issue has been at the center of state politics for decades and was a key factor behind the Assam agitation and the subsequent signing of the Assam Accord, as cited by PTI.The BJP-led government says it has taken steps to implement the provisions of the agreement. However, the opposition is expected to highlight what it says is the government’s failure to deliver on promises to provide constitutional, legislative and administrative protections to protect and promote the cultural, social and linguistic identity of the indigenous Assamese people. Two key aspects related to the immigration debate, the updating of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), are also likely to figure prominently during the campaign. The ruling party is expected to argue that opposition to the CAA is misplaced, given that only a limited number of Hindus from Bangladesh have applied for citizenship under the law.Development Projects/Welfare Schemes:The state government is expected to highlight major development initiatives in Assam, especially infrastructure projects in roads, railways, airports and waterways. It is also likely to showcase investments such as the Tata Semiconductor Unit and other agreements signed during the second edition of the ‘Advantage Assam’ Business Summit. However, the opposition may argue that development has been concentrated in select areas and has come at the expense of indigenous communities, alleging that their lands have been acquired for such projects. The BJP and its allies are also likely to emphasize the state government’s welfare schemes for women, including monthly financial assistance of Rs 1,250, support for women entrepreneurs and various health initiatives. Since women constitute almost half of the voters, the opposition could retaliate by claiming that crimes against women have not declined and that the distribution of benefits has been unequal. The ruling coalition will also highlight its recruitment drive in government departments, which it says has resulted in the appointment of over 1.6 lakh youth. Additionally, it is likely to focus on welfare measures for tea garden workers, a large voting block that traditionally supported the Congress but has largely switched its allegiance to the BJP since 2016.Zubeen Garg’s death: Another issue that attracted significant attention was the death of popular singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore in September 2025, following which justice was demanded in connection with his alleged murder. Opposition parties are expected to accuse the BJP-led government of lack of commitment towards ensuring justice in the case. However, the ruling government can point out that it formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT), arrested the accused and the case is currently sub judice.
