AIFF delays elections by three months, FIFA says it has no objection
World football’s governing body FIFA has told the All India Football Federation (AIFF) that it has “no objection” to the elections being postponed from September to December 2026.

Panaji: World football’s governing body FIFA has told the All India Football Federation (AIFF) that it has “no objection” to postponing the elections from September to December 2026 to ensure full compliance with the Constitution along with the new National Sports Administration Act 2025 and its related rules.AIFF President Kalyan Choubey was elected for a four-year term on 2 September 2022. Elections were to be held before the end of his tenure, but with the National Sports Administration Act 2025 coming into force, the AIFF informed the governing bodies that he needs to continue in office till the end of this year “to ensure the uninterrupted administration of football in India”.“On December 22, 2025, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports issued a notice recognizing that the structural changes required for all National Sports Federations to fully align with the NSGA are of fundamental nature. “To facilitate compliance with the provisions of the NSGA, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports granted one-time extension to National Sports Federations whose elections are to be held in this calendar year, allowing such federations to hold their next elections by December 31,” AIFF Deputy Secretary General M Satyanarayana wrote in a letter to FIFA and the AFC last month.FIFA said it had no objection and reiterated its desire to support and work closely with the AIFF throughout this process.“We request you to keep FIFA and the AFC informed about any further steps in the amendment process of the AIFF Constitution and specifically share with us a document outlining the key amendments required and the necessary steps, along with the tentative timelines, to ensure compliance with the NSGA,” Emile Domes, manager of member association administration services at FIFA, wrote to the federation last week.Meanwhile, the AIFF has asked its member associations to complete the amendments to its constitutional document on or before June 30, 2026.The AIFF said that the governance principles and constitutional positions reflected in the constitutions of the state associations should be extended to its affiliated units such as district associations, where applicable, to ensure consistency of governance standards at all levels of football administration in India.

CM rallies Nazira, hints at 63 new seats under women quota

Dibrugarh: Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma Making an important announcement at an election rally in Nazira under Sivasagar district on Saturday, she said the total number of assembly seats in Assam may increase by 63 in future due to the implementation of women’s reservation – potentially increasing it to 189 from the current 126 seats.Addressing a large gathering in support of BJP candidate Mayur Borgohain, who is in a high-profile contest against sitting Congress MLA and leader of opposition in the Assam Assembly Debabrata Saikia, the CM used the occasion to make a categorical promise regarding the abolished Amguri assembly constituency.“There is a possibility that 63 more seats will be added to the existing 126 Assam Assembly seats due to women reservation. And when that happens, we will again try to revive the abolished Amguri assembly seat,” Sarma announced before the crowd.Amguri constituency was dissolved after delimitation, with one part merged into Sivasagar and the other into Nazira. The Chief Minister sought to reassure residents by acknowledging their emotional connect with their former constituency. He said, “After delimitation, a part of Amguri constituency went to Sivasagar and a part went to Nazira. The people of Amguri want their constituency to remain. But until we revive it, no government office will be shifted from Amguri. Everything will remain as it is. If possible, we will set up one or two more offices in Amguri.”Turning to the electoral battle, Sarma made a strong pitch for Mayur Borgohain, urging voters to support the BJP candidate and build on the momentum of the party’s governance record in the state. He highlighted the achievements of the BJP government in Assam and stressed the advantages of a double engine government with a single party at both the state and central levels in driving development.Sarma said, “The double engine government has brought roads, welfare schemes and transformation across Assam. Voting for Mayur Borgohain means voting to continue this progress in Nazira.”The Nazira contest is being seen as one of the most politically significant battles of the current election cycle, pitting the BJP candidate directly against one of the most prominent faces of the Congress in the state assembly. With the Chief Minister personally campaigning on the ground, the BJP is clearly leaving no stone unturned in the coveted seat.

Capricorn, this week feels like walking between sun and cloud. You start the week of April 05 with a sensible, stable mood that likes lists, time, and clear results. Saturn, your ruler, pushes you to be practical and a little hard on yourself. This is good, but don’t make it so tight that life starts to seem joyless.Things seem to be managing since 06th and 07th April. Income and expenses can be balanced if you don’t go looking for “one more thing” to buy. Now your words also have weight. Bagram, Benghazi, and blame: Trump faces reality in the Iran mess

Bagram, Benghazi, and blame: Trump faces reality in the Iran mess

TOI correspondent from Washington: The loss of at least six US aircraft and the uncertain fate of a missing US pilot in the war on Iran has rapidly transformed from a battlefield incident into a decisive political test for President Donald Trump, who has built his brand on ridiculing the foreign policy failures of his predecessors and projecting his image as an invincible leader. The stakes now extend far beyond the recovery of a single airman, as Pentagon officials confirm that a high-risk rescue operation is underway inside hostile Iranian territory. For Trump, who has repeatedly cast himself as America’s past opponent of “weak” leadership, the mission carries symbolic weight that could either validate or disrupt his long-cultivated aura of derring-do and dominance. The growing confrontation with Iran adds heightened urgency to concerns in defense circles about rising US air losses, operational redundancies and sustainability of the campaign. In addition to one F-15E fighter jet and A-10 attack aircraft lost this week, the US also lost an AWACS aircraft and three other F-15s in “friendly fire” in Kuwait. While one of the F-15 pilots shot down by Iran has been rescued, the other is missing. US officials also said the pilot of an A-10 shot down by Iran on Thursday diverted the damaged plane to Kuwaiti airspace before bailing out and was later rescued. Unnamed officials told US media that two US search and rescue helicopters were hit by Iranian fire, wounding their crews. Trump has not commented directly on the incident, although he shared a video of a massive bridge collapse on Friday with the caption: “Iran’s largest bridge has collapsed, never to be used again.” On Saturday morning, he posted, “Remember when I gave Iran ten days to make a deal or open the Strait of Hormuz. Time is running out – 48 hours before all hell will reign over them. Glory be to God!” – Again without mentioning the missing pilot. The test now is whether he can continue to boast of his aura of invincibility or whether it will collapse. For years, Trump has used history as a political weapon. He has regularly referenced the Iran hostage crisis to portray Jimmy Carter as the embodiment of American humiliation, and has often declared that under his leadership such a crisis would have been resolved “in 24 hours.” Similarly, he has ridiculed Joe Biden over America’s chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan, calling it “the biggest embarrassment in the history of our country”, while calling the abandonment of Bagram Air Base a strategic folly. His criticisms did not spare fellow Republicans either. Trump has repeatedly called the invasion of Iraq under George W. Bush the “worst mistake” in American history, citing flawed intelligence on weapons of mass destruction that his administration is being held responsible for with respect to Iran. He has also ridiculed Barack Obama for failing to enforce his “red line” in Syria and for negotiating the Iran nuclear deal, which Trump calls “one of the worst deals ever.”Against this backdrop, the downed F-15 and missing pilot present a serious vulnerability with critics saying this is exactly the kind of situation Trump has spent a decade saying would never happen under him. Trump’s representatives are holding their breath in the hope that the missing pilot will be rescued rather than captured, while Iran has announced a reward and started searching for him. Despite their beating, Iranians rejoiced over the missing pilot on Friday. Iran’s parliamentary speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf mocked the US in a post on Twitter, writing, “After defeating Iran 37 times in a row, the brilliant no-strategy war they started has now been downgraded from ‘regime change’ to ‘Hey! Can someone find our pilots? Please?’ Wow! What incredible progress. Absolute genius.”The administration has released limited details about the rescue effort, but officials have indicated that special operations forces, supported by surveillance and electronic warfare resources, are attempting to locate and extract the pilot. Military planners acknowledge that timing is of the essence. The prospect of the pilot being captured and paraded around for publicity purposes raises painful historical parallels – exactly the kind Trump has long used to attack his predecessors.Increasing pressure is the broader trajectory of the conflict. US negotiators acknowledged that while the loss of air assets was greater than anticipated, Iranian defenses had proven more flexible and adaptive. Each additional loss destroys not only operational capability, but also the perception of overwhelming American dominance that Trump has sought to project. That perception was bolstered by what the administration has claimed was a nearly flawless intervention in Venezuela, where U.S. support helped stabilize a puppet government without significant American casualties. The success there emboldened Trump and strengthened his belief that decisive action, coupled with rhetorical toughness, could lead to quick victory without protracted entanglement. However, Iran is proving to be a far more formidable opponent, even if it is suffering losses on a daily basis. For Trump, the rescue operation is more than a military operation; This is a test of credibility. A successful extraction would strengthen their claims to decisive leadership and operational superiority. However, failure could provide critics with a powerful counter-example that would undermine years of political messaging. In a presidency defined by bold claims and sharp contrasts with the past, a pilot’s fate now holds disproportionate importance both on the battlefield and in the court of public opinion.

'Satan' and gang: UP ATS busts Pakistan-backed module targeting rail infrastructure

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) has busted a suspected terror module allegedly operating under instructions from Pakistani handlers, arrested four people for planning arson on railway infrastructure and conducted reconnaissance of key establishments and public properties in several cities.According to ATS officials, intelligence inputs indicate that the group was in constant touch with Pakistan-based handlers through social media platforms and was involved in anti-national activities aimed at creating terror and economic disruption.ATS investigation revealed that the gang was led by Saqib alias “Devil” (25), a resident of Meerut, who allegedly maintained links with the handlers through platforms like Telegram, Signal and Instagram. He was also allegedly linked to radical groups and foreign numbers, including those linked to Afghanistan. The module was tasked with conducting reconnaissance of important institutions, political personalities, railway signal systems and vehicles and sharing inputs with cross-border operators.Police said the group planned to damage railway signal boxes, set fire to trucks filled with gas cylinders and target key establishments to spread fear. In some cases, the accused had already carried out small arson incidents, recorded videos and sent them to their handlers in exchange for money transferred through QR codes. The ATS said the operators used online inciting identities and extremist narratives to instigate the accused to carry out attacks including targeting vehicles on religious grounds and carrying out acts associated with widespread terror propaganda.Apart from Saqib, the other accused are Arbab (20) of Meerut, Vikas Gehlawat alias Raunak (27) and Lokesh alias Papala Pandit alias Sanju (19), both of Gautam Buddha Nagar. Police said the latter two were recruited through social media and allegedly conducted reconnaissance activities in cities including Ghaziabad, Aligarh and Lucknow.Officials said the accused had also received Google location pins of the targeted sites from their operators, based on which they conducted surveillance and shared video footage. On April 2, 2026, the group had reportedly planned to carry out arson and possible explosion near railway signaling infrastructure close to Lucknow railway station. Acting on a tip-off, ATS teams reached the spot and arrested all the four accused before they could execute the plan.A case has been registered at the ATS police station in Lucknow under relevant sections of the Indian Judicial Code, 2023 and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. The accused have been produced in the court and further legal proceedings are underway.During the search, ATS recovered a container filled with inflammable substance, seven mobile phones, 24 pamphlets and identity documents. Officials said detailed forensic analysis of digital devices is underway to unearth the wider network and funding channels.Preliminary inquiries reveal that the group was actively working to undermine the sovereignty and integrity of India by spreading subversion and terror. Further investigation is underway to identify additional links and possible sleeper cells, the ATS said.

Amazon's internal memo 'confirms' attacks on AWS centers in Dubai and Bahrain; Says: Services should not be...

Amazon has reportedly confirmed service disruptions at its Amazon Web Services (AWS) centers in Dubai and Bahrain following the Iranian attacks. The company said in an internal memo seen by Big Technology that it expected the “hardened” Dubai and Bahrain AWS centers would be “unavailable for an extended period.” According to the memo, staff have been asked to give ‘priority’ to these areas due to the scale of the damage. Amazon said it is working to help affected customers by moving its services to other regions.

What Amazon’s internal memo says about Dubai and Bahrain AWS centers

“Both of these areas remain patchy, and the services should not be expected to operate with normal levels of redundancy and resiliency,” an internal Amazon memo reads, according to the Big Technology report. “We are actively working to free up and reserve as much capacity as possible in the region for customers, and services should be scaled to the minimum footprint necessary to support customer migration.”“The AWS Bahrain region has been disrupted as a result of the ongoing conflict. We are working closely with local authorities and prioritizing the safety of our personnel during our recovery efforts. We continue to support affected customers, helping them migrate to alternative AWS regions, a large number of which are already successfully operating their applications from other parts of the world,” the company said in a blog post published March 24, 2026. “As this situation evolves, and as we have previously advised, we urge people with workloads in affected areas to continue to migrate to other locations.”The US-Israel-Iran war has now entered its sixth week. Amazon’s Bahrain facilities have been hit several times, including a strike earlier this week on April 1 that led to a fire. The company’s facilities in UAE have also suffered setbacks several times. “We do not have a timeline for when DXB and BAH will return to normal operations,” the internal post said.Last month, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) threatened to attack Microsoft, Google and Apple, among several other US tech giants. “Starting at 8:00 p.m. Tehran time (1630 GMT) on Wednesday, April 1, these companies should expect the destruction of their respective units in exchange for every kill in Iran,” the Guards said in a statement.
