A 350-year-old mystery may be over: Archaeologists have found remains believed to be those of The Three Musketeers d'Artagnan.
Skeleton uncovered under Dutch church

A remarkable archaeological discovery in the Dutch city of Maastricht may finally solve one of history’s most enduring mysteries. During restoration work at a historic church, researchers uncovered a high-status skeleton buried beneath the altar, an unusual and coveted resting place. What makes this discovery extraordinary is the presence of a musket ball fragment lodged in the thigh and a 17th-century French coin, both of which match closely with historical records of Charles de Batz de Castelmore d’Artagnan. The great soldier who inspired The Three Musketeers is said to have died in Maastricht in 1673 from a similar wound.

The discovery that could solve a 350-year-old mystery

The remains were discovered inside the Church of Saints Peter and Paul during ongoing restoration efforts, with archaeologists surprised by their location beneath the altar, which is usually reserved for individuals of high social or religious status. The excavation is being carried out by experts from RAAP Archaeological Consulting in collaboration with local heritage authorities.“This is an extraordinary discovery,” said Michel Grotheid, one of the lead researchers involved in the project. “Burial under church altars was rare and usually reserved for quite important individuals. This immediately raised questions about the identity of this individual.”Along with the skeleton, researchers found a French coin from the 1600s, giving rise to the theory that the man may have been a French military man. However, the most compelling clue was the musket ball fragment lodged in the thigh bone, indicating a fatal battlefield injury.

Who was D’Artagnan?

Charles de Batz de Castelmore d’Artagnan was a Gascon nobleman who became Captain of the Musketeers under Louis XIV. Known for his bravery and leadership, he became a major figure in French military history.Historian Olivier Poncet, who has studied the Musketeers extensively, said, “d’Artagnan was not just a literary hero. He was a trusted military commander and close to the royal court, making it plausible that he would have been buried with honors.”His legacy was later immortalized in literature by Alexandre Dumas, whose novels made him a symbol of loyalty, courage, and bravery.

the war that ended his life

Historical records confirm that d’Artagnan died on 25 June 1673 during the siege of Maastricht in the Franco-Dutch War. He was reportedly leading French troops in an attack on the Tongerspoort gate when he suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the thigh.Military historian Julian Wilmart noted, “The injury described in historical accounts is highly typical. It was not unusual for a musket shot to the thigh in siege warfare, but the fact that this skeleton shows a similar wound is particularly striking.”Contemporary accounts describe his death as heroic, but the exact location of his burial has never been clearly documented, further deepening the mystery that has persisted for more than three centuries.

Why is the evidence so compelling?

The newly discovered skeleton matches several key details from historical accounts. The thigh injury exactly matches the documented cause of death. French coinage indicates the individual’s nationality, while the distinguished burial location indicates a person of significant importance.Archaeologist Lisbeth Claes said, “Individually, these clues may not be conclusive. But taken together, they make a very compelling case that cannot be ignored.”Additionally, the church’s proximity to the siege site strengthens the theory that it may actually be d’Artagnan’s.

DNA testing can confirm the truth

To move beyond speculation, scientists have begun DNA analysis on the remains. The research is being conducted in collaboration with forensic experts and geneticists, including teams from Maastricht University.Maarten Larmuseau said, “For definitive identification, DNA is vital.” “If we can match the genetic profile with known descendants of the d’Artagnan family, we can finally confirm his identity with a high degree of certainty.”The results will be compared to genetic samples from documented descendants, potentially bringing an end to a 350-year-old historical mystery.

A legend between history and fiction

The story of D’Artagnan exists at the intersection of history and myth. While he was a real soldier, his legend was enhanced by The Three Musketeers, where he appears with fictional companions such as Athos, Porthos, and Aramis.Literary scholar Jean-Yves Taddy said, “Dumas transformed a historical figure into a universal symbol of friendship and bravery. The discovery of his true resting place will link literature and history in a powerful way.”The enduring popularity of the novel has ensured that his name remains synonymous with bravery and camaraderie. As DNA testing continues, historians and enthusiasts alike are keeping a close eye. If confirmed, the discovery would not only unearth d’Artagnan’s long-lost tomb, but also reunite one of literature’s greatest heroes with his true historical resting place.

New Delhi: The road to the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup in Australia was supposed to be the moment when Indian women’s football would finally come out of the shadows and take the much-awaited leap forward. With six World Cup spots at stake, the Blue Tigresses felt the pulse of history beneath their studs. Instead, the campaign, with three defeats in three games, could be described as a sequence of administrative gambles followed by heartbreak on the field, leaving players to pick up the pieces of a shattered dream.Sangeeta Basfour, a midfield general who saw the nightmare up close while playing all three matches in the tournament earlier this month, tries to hide the deep collective grief behind the rhetoric of professional development.

EXCLUSIVE: Where did India go wrong in the Women’s Asia Cup? Aditi Chauhan decodes

“None of us are satisfied with our performance because the results did not go our way,” he said in an exclusive interview with TimesofIndia.com. “The coach had a lot of expectations from me. But personally, I feel I couldn’t give my best or support the team the way I should have… but to play on such a big stage against top players. That in itself was a big achievement for us.”

An approach that left more questions than answers

The unrest in Perth began long before the opening whistle. In a move that surprised many observers, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) opted for the overseas-better approach just weeks before the tournament. He demoted home coach Crispin Chhetri, who had orchestrated the famous qualification win over Thailand, to an assistant role. In his place came Costa Rican tactician Amelia Valverde, who had two World Cup qualifications on her resume, and signed a frantic, short-term two-month contract. On paper the preparations looked seamless as the team spent nearly 40 days in Antalya, Turkey to test themselves against European clubs.

Basfour recalled, “Honestly, our preparation was very good.” “We played against teams from Ukraine and Russia… against Champions League-level club teams. We won almost every match.” But as the team moved from the Mediterranean air of Türkiye to the high-pressure pressure of Australia, cracks began to appear.“As the matches were getting closer, we were getting more excited but also a little nervous. Until we played the first match, we couldn’t really predict how our performance would be. No matter how much you prepare, there is always uncertainty on such a big stage,” the 29-year-old admitted. “We became more serious after the first match. We still regret that we feel like our World Cup opportunity was taken away from us.”

a coaching carousel

The AIFF have confirmed that they will not be extending Valverde’s contract, showing that their stop-gap solution to success has become useless.According to several reports, his short-lived tenure was marred by tactical instability, with the AIFF Technical Committee recently describing his tenure as “disappointing”. He cycled through three different formations in three group games. The results on the field were disastrous, including three defeats, zero points and a crushing 11–0 defeat at the hands of eventual champions Japan.

Basfour feels there was little time for Valverde. “She’s a very good coach. “If she had more time with us, she would have understood us even better,” the West Bengal-born midfielder told this website. But he still tried and talked to everyone, motivating us both on and off the field. There wasn’t really any problem.”Despite the 11–0 scoreline against Japan, Basfour refused to accept that the margin was too big for Indian football. Looking at her other opponents, Vietnam and Chinese Taipei, she insists the difference was not quality, but execution and perhaps a little luck. “If you look at teams like Vietnam or Chinese Taipei, there is no big difference. We could have done better. We fought hard as a team. We were also unlucky, many of our shots hit the post,” he admitted.“If we had a longer camp and played more friendly matches, it would have helped.”

What’s next?

The road to salvation now leads to Nairobi. In April 2026, the Blue Tigresses will take part in the FIFA series, facing hosts Kenya at the Nyayo National Stadium. It is a chance to overcome various opposition including Malawi and the Australian side which recently hosted the continental crisis.

It would have helped if we had a longer camp and played more friendly matches.

Sangeeta Basfour, India women’s national team midfielder

There is optimism, however, tempered by appeals for structural change. For Basfour, the nightmare in Australia was not just about tactical formations or foreign versus domestic coaches; It was about the daily reality of Indian sports. Also read: $256K, what’s next for Nepal? Competitive cricket, infrastructure boost and a helping hand from India“Improving grassroots development and extending the duration of the women’s league will help a lot,” she said.“When players go back home, they don’t always get proper training or facilities. If the league runs longer, the players will improve and the national team will perform better.”

Pentagon: Pentagon considering redirecting Ukraine-linked weapons to Middle East as Iran war puts pressure on US arms: report

File photo: US President Donald Trump with Ukrainian President Zelensky

The Pentagon is considering whether to send some weapons originally intended for Ukraine to the Middle East as the war in Iran puts pressure on U.S. stockpiles of key weapons, The Washington Post reported, citing three people familiar with the matter.

air defense interceptor Among the weapons under review

According to the report, the weapons that may be redirected include air defense interceptor missiles ordered through a NATO-backed program launched last year, under which partner countries buy US-made weapons for Kiev. The report said no final decision has been made, but such a move would underline the trade-offs facing Washington as it tries to continue military operations in the Middle East while maintaining support for Ukraine.

nato‘s PURL program is seen as a potential pressure point

The Priority Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative was established last year to keep selected US military equipment flowing to Ukraine even after the Trump administration reduced most of the Pentagon’s direct security assistance to Kiev. The program allows partner countries to purchase US weapons for Ukraine, with European allies playing a larger role in funding and arming Ukrainian forces since Trump returned to office.A NATO official responding to questions from The Washington Post did not directly say whether the alliance was aware of concerns over the potential change, but said the country “continues to contribute to PURL and equipment continues to flow to Ukraine.”According to the Washington Post, the same official said that since last summer, the initiative has supplied 75% of the missiles for Ukraine’s Patriot batteries and almost all the ammunition used in its other air defense systems.

Pentagon signals prioritization of operational needs of US and allies

In a statement cited in the report, a Pentagon spokesperson said the Defense Department would “ensure that the U.S. military and our allies and partners have everything they need to fight and win,” but did not comment further on internal deliberations.According to The Washington Post, Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States, Olga Stefanyshina, said Kiev is in touch with partners on its needs, including air defense, and understands “a period of considerable uncertainty” during the war.“Any disruptions have been minimized since the beginning of recent operations in the Middle East,” he said.

iran war Concern is increasing over US reserves

Concerns have grown as US Central Command has struck more than 10,000 targets in Iran in just four weeks of fighting. Admiral Brad Cooper, head of Central Command, said on Wednesday that the US is on track to reduce Tehran’s ability to project power beyond its borders. The report said some of the weapons most likely to be used in the conflict include Patriot and THAAD air defense interceptors, which are also important to Ukraine as it continues to face Russian missile and drone attacks. The US military has already transferred such missiles from other theaters, including Europe and East Asia, to US Central Command in the Middle East to strengthen defenses against Iranian drone and ballistic missile attacks.A person familiar with internal Pentagon calculations told The Washington Post that PURL deliveries are likely to continue, but future packages may lack some air defense capabilities as the US looks to rebuild its own stocks and those of allies in the Gulf.“The policy debate is how much you give to Ukraine,” said another person. “It’s a real lively discussion.”

Funding questions and possible diversion of NATO funds

Separately, the Pentagon informed Congress on Monday that it intended to remove about $750 million of funding provided by NATO countries through the PURL program to restore U.S. military inventories instead of sending additional aid to Ukraine, citing two U.S. officials. It remained unclear whether participating European governments fully understood how that funding was being used.According to a US official, countries have committed approximately $4 billion to Ukraine through the program. The report comes as the war in Iran is reshaping military and diplomatic calculations globally.US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday a deal to end the Iran war is close, while Tehran rejected a 15-point US ceasefire proposal and issued its own demands, launching new attacks on Israel and Gulf Arab states.Iran’s foreign minister later told state TV, “So far there have been no negotiations with the enemy and we do not plan any negotiations.”More than 1,500 people in Iran, nearly 1,100 in Lebanon, 20 in Israel and 13 US military personnel have been killed so far in the fighting.

Gold, Silver Price Forecast Today (March 26, 2026): Will gold rise to Rs 1.55 lakh/10 gram and silver reach Rs 2.60 lakh/kg?
Gold looks set to extend its rally towards 155,000 levels in the upcoming sessions. (AI image)

Gold and Silver Price Forecast Today: Abhilash Koikkara, Head of Forex and Commodities, Nuvama Professional Clients Group, says that gold and silver prices may continue to rise in the coming sessions.

mcx gold price outlook

On the weekly time frame, MCX Gold has bounced back from recent lows, finding support near the 30-week moving average, indicating the resumption of an uptrend after a brief decline. The metal is displaying an intermediate bullish trend, potentially creating a buying window. However, a strong close below key support could trigger a more pronounced correction. Nevertheless, the broad bullishness remains intact as long as prices remain above recent swings. In the coming week, the area around the weekly low of 137,000 is likely to serve as a key support area, underscoring its technical importance. Any movement towards this level could attract new buying interest, limiting near-term downside risk. As long as prices remain above this mark, the broad bullish structure is expected to remain intact. However, the bullish scenario will be negated if it closes below this level.Gold looks set to extend its rally towards 155,000 levels in the upcoming sessions. This upward move would signal a bounce off support and could sustain bullish momentum in the near term. Furthermore, continued strength in price action supports the positive outlook and suggests the recovery may continue. In short, gold maintains a bullish bias supported by a positive underlying trend that points to the possibility of further upside. As long as prices remain above the key support at $137,000, the broader bullish structure should hold. With momentum indicators aligning and sentiment remaining favourable, the metal is likely to trade with a positive bias and continue its upward trend in the coming sessions.

mcx silver price outlook

From a weekly perspective, silver has recovered its support base and continues to trade above an important moving average. After bouncing off the recent lows, the price structure shows a positive trend. Since the larger trend remains up, short-term declines could provide opportunities for accumulation, as long as last week’s lows are not broken. Market participants should align their positions with the dominant trend and consider placing protective stop-loss levels close to the latest weekly low to effectively control risk. The market started the week on a strong note, recovering from recent lows and indicating continued upside strength. The positive outlook is likely to remain intact as long as prices remain above key weekly support levels. The first line of support is seen near last week’s low of 217,000, and a definite close below this point could challenge the current positive bias. Until then, short-term corrections are expected to spur buying interest, allowing the broader uptrend to continue. On the positive side, silver looks set to retest the breakdown levels around the $260,000 resistance zone in the near to medium term. Continued moves towards this area will strengthen the ongoing bullish trend, supported by stable momentum and supportive technical indicators. Overall, the broader bullishness is expected to remain intact as long as prices remain above the 217,000 support zone, potentially opening the door to further gains amid improving positive sentiment.

Credit stand-off hurts Hyderabad’s fuel flows, 40% pumps dry due to panic buying | hyderabad news

Credit stand-off hurts Hyderabad's fuel flows, panic buying dries up 40% of pumps

Hyderabad: Amid panic buying by consumers, petrol and diesel dealers in Hyderabad on Wednesday blamed the credit standoff with oil companies for fuel shortage at several pumps. Dealers claim that despite assurances from IOCL, HPCL and BPCL about adequate fuel stocks, 40% of the pumps in the city went dry.He alleged that the disruption was not due to fuel shortage but due to financial constraints faced by dealers in making payments to the companies. Panic buying made the situation worse. However, oil companies said that credit facilities were never uniform and were extended selectively based on the dealer’s financial credibility and transaction history. He also indicated that the disruption was temporary and fuel supplies were expected to stabilize by Thursday evening. According to dealers, oil companies had stopped supplying fuel to outlets that were unable to make payment either on the same day or in advance.

-

“Earlier, dealers were given a credit window of up to two days, but now they have to pay in advance before sending the fuel. Even when we are ready to make advance payments, supplies are not being sent for unknown reasons,” said M Amarender Reddy of Telangana Petroleum Dealers Association. times of India . Telangana Petroleum Tank Truck Owners Association president K Rajasekhara Reddy said that till recently, dealers were allowed credit facility of up to ₹1 crore, but this has been stopped due to supply stoppage for the last two days.

-

The situation worsened due to frequent bank holidays. “Typically, dealers require Rs 20 lakh to Rs 40 lakh to purchase a fuel load. Due to limited access to funds, payments are being delayed, leading to supply shortage,” said Rajeev Amram, joint secretary (south), Consortium of Indian Petroleum Dealers.“Given the financial pressures and high crude sourcing costs, extension of multi-day credit is not feasible. Payments need to be made almost on a daily basis,” said a state coordinator representing oil companies and an HPCL official.“All petroleum terminals and supply points are fully stocked, and fuel supplies continue to operate smoothly. Panic buying has led to an unusual increase in fuel purchases, temporarily impacting availability at some retail outlets,” the three oil companies said in a joint statement.
