Built deep beneath the island of Olkiluoto, the facility represents a long-awaited answer to the problem that has plagued nuclear power since its early days, that of what to do with fuel when it is no longer usable. As countries turn back to nuclear power to meet climate goals and growing electricity demand, Finland’s solution could offer a working model for safely separating radioactive waste from people and the environment on geological time scales.

The nuclear waste problem and Finland’s underground solution

Since the 1950s, nuclear reactors around the world have generated vast quantities of spent fuel. Globally, this has reached approximately 400,000 tonnes, most of which is currently stored in temporary facilities such as cooling pools and dry casks. These systems are designed for security, but not durability.The challenge lies in the nature of the waste itself. These are surrounded by bentonite clay, a material that swells when wet and helps block the movement of water. The entire structure is embedded within solid rock, creating several barriers between the waste and the biosphere.This layered system ensures that even if one barrier fails over time, the others continue to contain radiation.

Why go 400 meters underground?

Depth is important for the safety of reserves. Approximately 400 meters below ground, the facility is far from surface-level risks such as extreme weather, human activity and most environmental disturbances.The surrounding rocks have remained stable for billions of years, making it one of the most reliable natural barriers available. A White House Card Unlike Anything Before

UFC Freedom 250, often referred to as the “UFC White House” card, is scheduled to take place on Sunday, June 14, 2026, on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, DC, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence (1776-2026) and U.S. President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday. While the event was initially proposed for July 4 to directly align with Independence Day celebrations, it was eventually moved to June 14 to coincide with Flag Day and Trump’s birthday, after the President personally lobbied for the White House to host the card. Reports also indicated that logistical and security challenges played a significant role in the date change, as holding a large-scale sporting event at the White House on July 4 was considered complicated.The event is expected to serve as the centerpiece of the national celebrations and will feature a reduced seven-fight card, much less than the 12 or 13 bouts typically seen at numbered UFC events. Tickets are expected to be distributed to members of the military. The main event will see Ilya Topuria defend his lightweight title against Justin Gaethje, while the co-main event will see Alex Pereira take on Cyril Gane for the interim heavyweight title. The card also includes Derrick Lewis, who was added after a direct request from Trump. White revealed that the call came during UFC 327, and he took immediate action by calling Lewis to confirm his spot on the card. Lewis has since been matched up against Josh Hockitt, who recently improved to 9-0 with a decision win over Curtis Blaydes in Miami.

UFC is breaking the rules

The biggest change isn’t in the card, it’s how the event will begin.Speaking in a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Dana White confirmed that UFC Freedom 250 will include a live performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner”, which the promotion has touted for years.“We don’t do the national anthem,” White said, adding that his issue has always been how it slows down events and doesn’t fit into the UFC’s global structure. “One of the things that drives me crazy in boxing is that before the fight starts they have to sing two national anthems and all this stuff. We’re an international business. We have people from everywhere.”He said the concern has always been about the global nature of the game. “We can sing two national anthems that are not even from this country, plus, the whole world is watching us. We are in over a billion homes around the world so I don’t do that.”That post is being set aside for this event. “This will be the first time in a very long time, like a UFC double-digit, that we’ve done the national anthem,” White said, confirming that Zac Brown will perform it on June 14.

UFC is also making another change to its bonus system this time for the event. While the usual Fight of the Night and performance bonuses will still be awarded, an additional $1 million in post-fight bonuses will be offered through sponsor Crypto.com. The additional incentives are described as the largest bonus pool in UFC history and will apply to all 14 fighters on the card.

What makes this event different

From the venue to the card and now the format, UFC Freedom 250 is being treated differently than a standard event. White previously hinted that fighters could move out of the Oval Office, although current expectations are that only main event fighters will do so. FIFA status and how the tournament is structured

Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, world football’s governing body, addressed the issue at CNBC’s Invest in America forum on April 15 and confirmed that Iran will participate in the tournament.“The Iranian team is definitely coming,” he said, expressing hope that “the situation will be peaceful by then.”Infantino stressed that the players deserved to compete, saying that they “represent their people” and have earned their place. “They really want to play, and they should play,” he said, reiterating his view that sports should remain separate from politics.

This situation matches how the tournament is set up. The 2026 World Cup will run from June 11 to July 19 and will be the biggest World Cup in history, featuring 48 teams and 104 matches. 78 of them will be played in the United States, including every match through the quarterfinals at MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey. Canada and Mexico will each host 13 matches, for a total of 16 venues across the three countries – 11 in the US, three in Mexico and two in Canada.

Why have Iran’s match venues become an issue?

Since the United States is hosting most of the games, Iran’s entire group-stage schedule is currently scheduled there. They are in Group G with Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand, and matches are planned for the US West Coast. As per the current situation, Iran is scheduled to face New Zealand on June 16 at SoFi Stadium in California, Belgium on June 21 at the same venue and Egypt on June 27 at Lumen Field in Seattle. If they progress, any knockout matches will also be played in the US, given how the bracket is structured.

For this reason, Iran’s Football Federation had to formally request a change. Federation president Mehdi Taj confirmed that discussions with FIFA include the possibility of moving those matches to Mexico if security guarantees cannot be ensured.

Request to move matches and FIFA’s response

Mexico indicated it was willing to host Iran’s events, but the request yielded no changes. Two Indian-origin women, a mother and daughter, were attacked in a horrific knife attack inside their home in Burbank, killing mother Aarti Verma, 59, a primary school teacher.
