TOI correspondent from Washington: The prospects of a second round of talks between the United States and Iran hang in suspense amid mistrust and misinformation, as Tehran has told Washington that it is not ready to come to Islamabad due to US provocations in the Persian Gulf. The message relayed through Pakistan and Iranian official media has stalled US Vice President JD Vance’s second visit to Islamabad in a week, even though President Trump portrayed the visit and even the outcome as an agreement in an apparent attempt to pressure Iran with a mix of coercion and inducement. At the time of writing this report, Vance was yet to fly to Pakistan. Repeatedly suggesting that there is a division in the Iranian leadership between hard-line clerics and moderates, Trump said in a social media post, “If Iran’s new leaders (regime change!) are smart, Iran can have a great and prosperous future!” When he attempted to persuade the Iranian team to come to Islamabad after issuing his customary threats of destroying the country. But there was no sign of Iran backing down as it insisted the US lift its naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and refrain from other aggressive action if it wanted talks. Trump, for his part, said the US would not lift the naval blockade until the deal is signed and would resume bombing Iran on Wednesday evening at the end of the two-week ceasefire. All this led to US Vice President J.D. Vance being treated as a victim of the President’s whims, waiting to board Air Force Two for the 15-hour flight to Islamabad for talks, with no guarantee of an outcome. Bizarrely, Trump first told US news outlets that Vance would not be going due to security concerns and then reversed course by saying he was going, but then appeared to derail the trip by announcing the seizure of an Iranian cargo ship that he said was trying to evade the US blockade. This announcement effectively broke down the negotiations. “While claiming readiness for diplomacy and dialogue, the US is behaving in a way that in no way indicates seriousness in pursuing the diplomatic process,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baqaei said in Tehran. He described the US blockade and seizure of the cargo ship as a “clear violation of the ceasefire”. “We have no plans for the next round of talks and no decision has been taken in this regard,” Bakayei said, adding that Pakistan has blocked Islamabad from hosting the second round of talks. In Washington, Trump also emphasized the growing perception in the US that he was led into the war by Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “Israel never talked to me about a war with Iran, the October 7 results have further reinforced my lifelong opinion that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon,” he said in a social media post, as Americans expressed their disapproval of another US war in surveys that now put the US president’s approval rating in the 30s. The administration is facing increasing pressure from voters and lawmakers to limit how much it is spending on the war amid rising prices, especially on gas, which have risen from about $2.50-$3.00 per gallon before the war to more than $4.00 in much of the country. Trump fumed, “I watch and read the fake news pundits and pollsters with complete disbelief. 90% of what they say is lies and fabricated stories, and the election is rigged, just like the 2020 presidential election was rigged.”

British Prime Minister Starmer rejects demand to resign amid protests over Epstein-linked Mandelson's appointment

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer acknowledged on Monday that he made a wrong decision in appointing Peter Mandelson as Britain’s ambassador to Washington, saying he would not have done so if he had known that Mandelson had failed security checks.Speaking in the House of Commons, Starmer said the facts about Mandelson’s investigation “should have been shared with me before he took office.” He added, “Had they known, I would not have proceeded with the appointment.”

Amid the controversy, Starmer has rejected demands to resign. Mandelson was fired in September, nine months after taking the role, after new information emerged about their friendship Jeffrey Epstein. Starmer was warned by his staff that the relationship posed a “reputational risk”. Documents released by the US Justice Department in January included emails that suggested Mendelson shared sensitive government information with Epstein in 2009 after the global financial crisis. The Prime Minister said he was “angry” that he was not told that the thorough investigation process had recommended that Mandelson should not receive a security clearance. He placed the blame on Foreign Office officials, saying that they failed to inform him, even though the department ultimately exonerated Mandelson.MPs expressed disbelief at his explanation. “I know that many members of the House will find these facts unbelievable,” Starmer said. “On this, all I can say is that they are right. It requires faith.”Conservative MP Kemi Badenoch strongly criticized Starmer, saying, “He didn’t seem to ask any questions. Why? Because he didn’t want to know.” He later said that he had “thrown his employees and his executives under the bus.”Senior ministers have supported him, with Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy saying that if Starmer had known about the failed investigation, “he would never have appointed him ambassador.”Following the revelations, Starmer fired the Foreign Office’s top civil servant, Ollie Robbins. However, Robbins’s aides say he will not be able to share sensitive investigation details with the prime minister. Robbins is expected to give his account to the Foreign Affairs Committee. The issue has upset Labor Party members, who are already worried about poor poll ratings. The pressure could increase if the party performs poorly in local and regional elections to be held on May 7.Critics say the controversy highlights wider challenges to Starmer’s leadership since Labour’s election victory in July 2024, as he has struggled with economic growth, public services and the cost of living, as well as a series of policy reversals.British police launched a criminal investigation and arrested Mandelson in February on suspicion of misconduct in public office. He has denied wrongdoing and has not been charged. He is not accused of sexual misconduct.

Amid the new round of India-US trade talks, agricultural groups and civil societies have urged the government not to agree to the import of GM agricultural products. india news

Amid the new round of India-US trade talks, agricultural groups and civil societies have urged the government not to agree to the import of GM agricultural products.

New Delhi: With the start of a fresh round of trade talks between India and the US in Washington, the Coalition for a GM-Free India – a network of farmers and civil society organizations – on Monday wrote to the Central government urging it not to allow the import of genetically modified (GM) cotton seed oil, animal feed dried distillers grains (DDG) and soybean oil from the US into India. In its detailed letter to several Union ministers, including Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, the alliance also urged them not to allow GM to be dismantled as a non-tariff trade barrier. The US has long been asking India to address the issue of non-tariff barriers to trade in US food and agricultural products. The coalition argued that allowing these imports would amount to backdoor entry of GM food into India, even though domestic law clearly prohibits it, and would lead to the legalization of transgenic food. While India can protect its ground by not allowing imports of maize (maize) and soybean (both genetically modified crops in the US), in an interim agreement on February 7, it agreed to eliminate or reduce tariffs on a wide range of US agricultural products, including DDG and soybean oil.The move was criticized by agricultural organizations, who said that DDGs would mostly come from genetically modified US corn.In its letter, the coalition pointed out how various US organizations are directly or indirectly pushing for opening up the Indian market to GM agricultural products, and urged the government to distance itself from all entities that are promoting US interests for GM crops in India under their MoUs with US pro-GM organisations.“These entities are no less than new-age East India companies, setting up a presence in India and working to open up India’s markets to American GM products and subvert our sovereignty,” it said.

Wife of active-duty US Army sergeant detained by ICE in Texas could be deported to Mexico

टेक्सास में आईसीई द्वारा हिरासत में ली गई सक्रिय-ड्यूटी अमेरिकी सेना सार्जेंट की पत्नी को मेक्सिको भेजा जा सकता है

The El Salvadoran wife of an active-duty U.S. soldier detained by ICE could be deported to Mexico.

Sergeant First Class Jose Serrano, an active-duty U.S. Army sergeant who served in the Army for 27 years, including several years in Afghanistan, said ICE is out of control after his wife, Daisy Rivera Ortega, who is El Salvadorian by birth, was detained by ICE on April 14 in Texas. When Ortega was arrested he was assigned to the immigration office in El Paso.Ortega came to the US in 2016 and was granted legal protection in 2019, CBS News reported. Because of his legal protections, Ortega cannot be deported to El Salvador, but authorities told Serrano, 51, that his wife could be deported to Mexico. Serrano said, “I don’t really understand why, because he followed immigration rules to a T from day one.” He said his wife had an active work permit at the time of her arrest.Serrano said in his interview with CBS, “I love the Army. The Army helped me for almost 28 years. This is not the Army, sir. This is ICE.” “ICE is out of control right now and is taking away our rights as soldiers.”Serrano was born in Puerto Rico, and the couple married in 2022. He also submitted a Parole in Place application on his wife’s behalf last year, which is a special program designed to provide deportation protection to military spouses or parents who are in the U.S. without legal status, but the case remained pending. The wife had a military ID that was labeled wife of an active-duty Army soldier. US service members cannot travel to Mexico. If Ortega is deported to Mexico where she knows no one, Serrano will have to give up either her army career or her wife. He suffered from traumatic brain injury, PTSD and depression and his mental health deteriorated after his wife’s arrest as he was unable to sleep.

DHS says Ortega is a criminal illegal alien

DHS said in its statement to CBS News that Ortega was ordered deported in 2019 after receiving full due process. The department labeled him a “criminal illegal alien” and said he had been convicted of illegal entry into the United States.

TMC's Derek O'Brien says opposition will bring new proposal to remove CEC Gyanesh Kumar; BJP accused of hatching a 'conspiracy' in Bengal
CEC Gyanesh Kumar; TMC MP Derek O’Brien

New Delhi: Opposition parties will bring a new proposal to impeach Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP and spokesperson Derek O’Brien said on Monday.“19 political parties and around 300 MPs had earlier given impeachment notice against the CEC. In the coming days, a fresh impeachment notice will be brought with additional charges,” O’Brien told reporters at a press conference in Kolkata.Earlier this month, both Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Rajya Sabha Chairman, Vice President CP Radhakrishnan, rejected opposition notices demanding the removal of Kumar, who has been repeatedly accused of favoring the ruling BJP.Preparations for the upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal – where the TMC has been in power since 2011 and will seek power for the fourth consecutive term – have been particularly acrimonious, with tensions over issues such as the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists and the removal of IAS and IPS officers in the state by the Election Commission (EC). Since the Model Code of Conduct is currently in force, the Election Commission is currently overseeing the state machinery. The previous proposal to remove Kumar was the first such move against the current CEC.Of the 294 assembly seats in West Bengal, 152 seats will go to polls on Thursday, while the remaining 142 seats will go to polls on April 29. Counting of votes is to take place on May 4.

‘BJP is planning a big conspiracy before the second phase of voting’

Meanwhile, O’Brien further alleged that the BJP, which is the ruling party at the Center and the principal opposition in the state, is hatching a “big conspiracy” ahead of the second phase. He claimed, “We have reliable information that the Home Minister has called a meeting with the heads of CBI, ED and NIA. In the next 100 to 150 hours, some serious or devious action has been planned before the second phase of elections.”The Rajya Sabha member said such incidents are likely to happen in the districts of South Bengal.O’Brien also commented that Union Home Minister Amit Shah was working like a “full-time BJP worker”. Shah, BJP’s chief strategist and former party president, had earlier said that he would spend 15 days in the state. The TMC MP also accused the BJP of deploying “disproportionate force” to defeat Chief Minister and party supremo Mamata Banerjee.“To defeat a woman you need 18 cabinet ministers, the prime minister, the home minister, the defense minister, several chief ministers, central agencies and thousands of security personnel,” he said.

GT vs MI: Update | Achievement:

While the franchise continues Opener and former captain Rohit Sharma missed out due to hamstring injuryMI also dropped overseas opener Ryan Rickelton due to his poor form at the top.

Who is Danish Malevar?

A right-handed batsman, Danish hails from Vidarbha and is regarded as an emerging talent in the domestic circuit due to his consistency in red-ball cricket. MI had bought the 21-year-old player in the 2026 auction at a base price of Rs 30 lakh.

Malewar started his cricket journey at City Gymkhana Academy under the guidance of coaches Swaroopraj Srivastava and Nitin Gawande. Coaches immediately recognized his discipline and determination.

He was also a key contributor to Vidarbha’s title-winning Ranji Trophy 2024-25 campaign, scoring 783 runs at an average of 52 in nine matches. The batsman recorded two centuries and six half-centuries that season, and finished as his team’s third-highest run-scorer. Malewar played in the middle order for his state, usually at number 4.

The young batsman has represented Vidarbha since the Under-14 level and joined the team at the age of 12. Taking inspiration from idols Sachin Tendulkar and KL Rahul, Malewar is known for his strong work ethic. However, his aim is to develop his own batting identity by mastering every shot, from drives to flicks and sweeps.

The Danish, who came in to bat alongside veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock, failed to make a mark after being blown away by Kagiso Rabada’s inswinger. Malewar was declared LBW after scoring just two runs in four balls.

The 21-year-old right-handed all-rounder brings versatility as a right-arm fast bowler and can also contribute with the bat lower down the order.

“Kriss has consistently impressed the coaching staff with his dedication, work ethic and quality in every session and practice game for Mumbai Indians. His commitment and development in domestic cricket and practice sessions for Mumbai Indians this season has earned him this well-deserved opportunity to transition into the main team,” the franchise said in a brief statement.

The young all-rounder is likely to be used in the middle overs, while the premier pace bowlers are struggling to make breakthroughs.
