Dehradun: Government school teachers in Uttarakhand have written to senior education officials seeking alternative arrangements while being deployed for census and booth-level officer (BLO) duties under the SIR exercise, warning that disengagement of teaching staff is severely disrupting classroom instruction, especially in schools operating with minimum staff.Teachers said their involvement in these additional duties, likely to continue for at least a year, could lead to prolonged gaps in teaching at a time when recovery of learning remains a priority. He has urged the department to make interim arrangements to ensure that students are not left without supervision or instruction during his absence. This concern is most acute in single-teacher schools, where any absence makes it impossible to fully care for students. In a letter, AK Gosain, a teacher from Sahaspur on the outskirts of Dehradun, wrote, “Since the undersigned is involved in teacher training and census work, a situation may arise where the school would need to remain closed for so many days.” In another school in Banjarwarla village in Dehradun district, which has around 200 students, there are six teachers, five have been assigned census and BLO duties. On April 11, the school principal wrote to senior officials seeking relief, saying, “For the sake of education of the students and smooth functioning of the school, I request you to please relieve at least two teachers from these duties.” Across the state, there were at least 3,000 single-teacher schools as of last year. The teachers said they are already engaged in several education department programmes, including census and BLO duties as well as the Pravesh Mahotsav and the National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Comprehension and Numeracy (NIPUN). “Our promotions are on hold from 2025 following the orders of the apex court and transfers are also on hold due to the orders of the High Court. We are only demanding relief from BLO duty as it is not part of the right to education,” said Digambar Singh Negi, Chamoli district president of Uttaranchal State Primary Teachers Association. Dharmendra Rawat, Dehradun district president of the union, said that although teachers continue to perform the assigned duties, its impact on students is significant. “In single-teacher schools or schools with limited staff, students are being seriously impacted, which can have an impact on their future outcomes,” he said. When asked, Director of Education Deepti Singh said, “If such concerns are raised, the department informs the district election officers. However, it does not come under our purview to allot or transfer BLO duties.”

Oman Archaeological Discovery: Oman: What started as road construction reveals 3,000-year-old tombs and rare Iron Age burial rituals | world News

Oman: What started as road construction reveals 3,000-year-old tombs and rare Iron Age burial rituals
Coastal road construction reveals ancient tombs and 3,000-year-old buried secrets / Image: File

A remarkable archaeological discovery has been unearthed in Oman, where construction work along a major coastal road in the Al Batinah region unearthed tombs nearly 3,000 years old. The discovery was confirmed by Oman’s Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, which immediately intervened to halt construction and secure the site for detailed excavations.Authorities say the graves date back to the Iron Age, a critical period for understanding early human settlement in the Arabian Peninsula. The burial site appears to be a structured cemetery with several graves grouped together, suggesting that an organized community once lived on Oman’s coastline.

Ancient tombs discovered in Oman

Archaeologists examining the graves found human skeletal remains along with carefully placed objects, offering a rare glimpse of the burial traditions of the time. Near the deceased were pottery, as well as personal ornaments such as beads and decorative objects, as well as stone tools, which are believed to have had ceremonial significance.Experts from Oman’s Ministry of Heritage and Tourism explained that the arrangement of these objects reflected a belief system in which the dead were buried with possessions considered important to their afterlife. Variation in burial styles within tombs may also reflect differences in status within the same community, evolving customs, or specific family traditions. This level of detail is particularly important as well-preserved burial contexts from this period are relatively rare in the region.

Oman’s role in ancient trade

Officials highlighted that the location of the graves along the Al Batinah coast is no coincidence. The region historically served as a strategic link between major ancient trade networks connecting the Arabian Peninsula with Mesopotamia, the Indus Valley, and parts of East Africa.According to officials, the discovery provides important evidence of early human habitation and helps archaeologists better understand how communities lived, traded and interacted in Oman. It is expected that the findings will contribute to wider research on cultural exchange and economic activities during the Iron Age.A ministry spokesperson said such discoveries continue to reinforce Oman’s historical importance as a crossroads of civilizations, where maritime trade and settlement patterns shaped early societies.

looking ahead

Excavations are still ongoing at the site; Experts are carefully documenting every detail to maintain the integrity of the findings. Construction work in the area is suspended, reflecting the government’s priority of protecting archaeological heritage over rapid development.Researchers believe the site may hold even more secrets beneath the surface, including additional burial chambers, traces of nearby settlements, and biological evidence that may reveal insights about the diet, health, and daily lives of ancient populations. The Oman Ministry of Heritage and Tourism has indicated that the site could eventually be designated as a protected heritage area, which would ensure long-term conservation while opening the door to academic research and potential cultural tourism.

CSK vs KKR IPL 2026 Preview: Predicted XI, Livestreaming, Pitch Report, Weather Forecast

Timing is everything in cricket, and the schedule-makers have created a poetic backdrop for Tuesday’s clash in Chepauk. As the city of Chennai celebrates the Tamil New Year (Puthandu), guests stand at the doorstep of Kolkata Knight Riders Poila Baisakh. But for one of these powerhouse franchises, the festivities are sure to end with a sporting hangover.

While the yellow-clad faithful hope that the New Year will bring a change in fortunes for Chennai Super Kings, KKR are risking their celebrations only to suffer the sting of defeat on Wednesday morning. With the stands packed and the stakes high, only one side will bring the festive spirit to the night.

Kolkata Knight Riders have been a reliable team in this edition of the Indian Premier League. He has played cricket of a level which belongs to this world. And his fans believe that he can be unstoppable on most days.

KKR has played four matches this season and has not won a single match yet. They might have lost 4 out of 4, Had the rain not disrupted the Eden Gardens? Against last year’s finalists Punjab Kings.

Will KKR get their first win of the season? (PTI photo)

The 2024 winners have suffered a steep decline since winning their third title, which they will be desperate to stop when they face Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Tuesday, April 14.

If KKR is reliable and stoppable, CSK is also not far from it. Major changes to the team saw them languish at the bottom of the table last season. Topic continued at the beginning IPL Even in 2026, unless their marquee signing Sanju Samson decided to play against Delhi Capitals in his last game.

Chennai achieved its first win of the season with Samson’s unbeaten inning of 115 runs in 56 balls. There is some hope among his fans. However, this win should not overshadow the fact that CSK are still 9th in the IPL table, just one ahead of KKR.

This is essentially a fancy bottom of the table derby between two teams who have 8 IPL titles between them.

kkr team news

The main problem of Kolkata Knight Riders has been their middle overs batting. They start well in the powerplay and then falter in the middle overs when spin starts working. For long batting orders, they do not take enough risks to utilize their resources.

It is ridiculous that KKR is the only team to have appointed a specialist power coach (Andre Russell), who has had no impact on the middle-order batting.

KKR’s issue is highlighted by the fact that Sunil Narine, one of their most destructive batsmen in the title-winning season, has faced only 4 balls in the 4 matches played by KKR.

We have not seen Sunil Narine in his usual form with the bat so far this season. (PTI photo)

Bowling has been an issue this season too, but that is expected to continue as there is no word from the KKR camp on whether Varun Chakravarthy will play today or not.

A KKR spokesperson said before the game, “So, Varun is training. He has a bandage on his hand, but still he is training. He has been training for all the days before this match, so he is good.”

csk team news

This is perhaps the first season in many years when the spotlight is not on MS Dhoni. The great leader is still battling injury, and credit to CSK for ensuring that the story does not revolve around him again.

It is expected that Dhoni will not play in this match also Due to a calf strain, the onus is on Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson to take the team out of the bottom half of the table.

Dhoni is unlikely to be a part of CSK XI vs KKR. (PTI photo)

Sanju’s century will give him and his opening partner a significant boost in confidence, something that could prove vital in helping CSK strengthen themselves against KKR on home soil. At a venue like Chepauk, where pace can swing the game quickly, a confident start at the top can set the tone for the rest of the batting unit.

The aggressive intent shown in that innings will also reassure CSK fans that the team’s rebuild is moving in the right direction.

CSK vs KKR: Tactical battle

Kolkata Knight Riders almost crushed Lucknow Super Giants with 8 overs of spin in the last game. Sunil Narine bowled brilliantly at an economy of 3, while Anukul Roy maintained his hold at the Eden Gardens.

CSK have Shivam Dube and to some extent Dewald Brevis to counter the spin threat.

If Brewis plays, it will be his first game of the season, and the battle against Sunil Narine in Chepauk could be one of the most fascinating watches for the fans.

CSK vs KKR: Pitch Report

The match will be played on black soil surface. The surface is expected to yield a lot of runs and will hopefully provide opportunities to both batting units who have struggled so far this season.

The weather in Chennai will be fine and there is no hope of rain in the evening. There is an extreme heat warning in the southern part of India, so players are expected to keep themselves well hydrated.

CSK vs KKR: Predicted XI

CSK’s probable XI: Ruturaj Gaikwad (captain), Sanju Samson (wicketkeeper), Ayush Mhatre, Sarfaraz Khan, Dewald Brewis, Shivam Dubey, Jamie Overton, Noor Ahmed, Khalil Ahmed, Anshul Kamboj, Gurjapaneet Singh.

Effect Sub: Akil Hossein.

KKR’s probable XI: Ajinkya Rahane (captain), Finn Allen, Cameron Green, Angkrish Raghuvanshi (wicketkeeper), Rinku Singh, Rovman Powell, Ramandeep Singh, Anukul Roy, Sunil Narine, Navdeep Saini, Kartik Tyagi.

Impact Player: Vaibhav Arora.

Packaged food, daily damage: Global heart body flags diet-related risks as crisis grows in India india news

Packaged food, daily damage: Global heart body flags diet-related risks as crisis grows in India

New Delhi: That evening snack, that quick packet meal, that sugary drink you don’t think twice about – doctors say they’re silently creating your next health crisis. The American Heart Association (AHA) has issued a dire warning that everyday eating habits, especially the increasing reliance on ultra-processed foods, are promoting heart disease, diabetes and early death. The warning, published as a 2026 scientific statement, comes at a time when the disease burden is already rising in India. Cardiovascular diseases cause approximately 28% of all deaths, while more than 100 million people are living with diabetes, and millions more are at risk. “One in five deaths in India is directly attributable to poor diet,” said Dr Ambuj Roy, professor of cardiology at AIIMS, Delhi. In its latest guidance, the AHA shifts the conversation away from diet trends and quick fixes to what people actually eat every day. It requires a diet composed of vegetables, fruits and whole grains, as well as healthy protein sources such as lentils, beans, nuts and fish. It also recommends using plant-based oils in place of butter and animal fats and choosing minimally processed foods.Dr. Roy said that such principles can be adopted at the local level. He pointed to the Mediterranean diet as a proven model for reducing heart risk, and said a similar anti-inflammatory Indian diet could be created using locally available ingredients such as mustard oil, peanut oil, seasonal fruits, vegetables, millets, legumes, nuts and traditional spices. “Reducing ready-to-eat packaged foods, biscuits and snacks can reduce the risk of heart disease by 30%,” he said.Additionally, the AHA calls for limiting ultra-processed foods, added sugars, added salt and saturated fats. Packaged snacks, sugary drinks, refined flour items and processed meats are major contributors to obesity, diabetes and heart disease.Reiterating this, Dr Ravinder Goswami, Department of Endocrinology, AIIMS, said that conditions like diabetes, hypertension and coronary artery disease often overlap and require similar lifestyle changes. He emphasized portion control – “eat a little less than your hunger” – as well as being mindful about what you eat and avoiding distractions like screens during meals. He also cautioned against refined carbohydrates like flour-based foods and advised to reduce the consumption of fried foods and frequently heated oils. Choosing whole fruits instead of juice and roasted snacks instead of fried snacks can make a significant difference, he said.Urban lifestyles are increasing the risk, with food delivery and quick-trade making high-calorie, high-salt foods readily available. The AHA also recommends limiting alcohol and says people should not start drinking alcohol for purported heart benefits.“Simple habits like daily walking, exposure to sunlight and keeping an eye on your weight are as important as what you eat,” Dr. Goswami said. He said that weight gain in itself is a warning sign.Doctors say the risk increases over time because of daily habits, not occasional indulgences, and with lifestyle diseases on the rise among young Indians, what you eat every day shapes your long-term health.

Indie rock band Parikrama will open for rock giants Scorpions on April 24 in Delhi and on April 30 in Mumbai. Citing him as one of his biggest influences, Subir Malik, founder and manager of Parikrama, says, “He is one of our biggest influences. Ask anyone who grew up in the 70s, 80s and 90s – most of them listened to his songs. So when we get to open for legends like Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, or Scorpions, it feels like a full circle for us. Had it not been for these stories, Parikrama would not have existed. We grew up listening to the Scorpions and tried to play all their songs, even when we didn’t know how to play the guitar. From listening to those old cassettes to opening them now, it’s really a great honour,” he said. He further added that the band is working on a special set for the show. “We will be releasing some of our new original songs that have not been recorded yet,” says Subir.

Scorpions is a German heavy metal band founded in 1965 by Rudolf Schenke.

“Scorpions have a legacy and have been around for over 60 years, and Parikrama completes 35 years this year. There are similarities in the type of music, the eras and the unwavering love for rock ‘n’ roll. These legends have been around as a band for almost twice as long as us and are still going strong – great inspirations for us too. For Parikrama, this is just the beginning,” says Subir.
