IPL 2026: Mitchell Santner out, troubles increase for Mumbai Indians, Keshav Maharaj appointed as replacement

Mumbai Indians have suffered a big blow after Mitchell Santner was ruled out of IPL 2026. The all-rounder injured his left shoulder during the match against Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium on April 24 and could not recover in time for the remainder of the tournament.

The incident occurred in the 17th over when Santner completed a diving catch to dismiss Karthik Sharma. He was immediately seen holding his left shoulder and was later treated in the dugout, where he was applied an ice pack and placed his arm in a sling.

Who did Mumbai name as the replacement?

Mumbai Indians have signed South African left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj as a replacement for Mitchell Santner. One of South Africa’s most experienced spinners across all formats, Maharaj is known for his accuracy, control and ability to generate sustained pressure. He has been a regular presence in the Proteas team since making his international debut in 2016.

Interestingly, Maharaj was named in South Africa’s squad for the 2021 T20 World Cup without playing a single T20 match. He later made his debut as captain against Sri Lanka and made an immediate impact by taking a wicket with his very first ball in the format.

A proven leader at both the international and franchise level, Maharaj has taken 31 wickets in his last 30 T20 matches, with a best performance of 3 for 15. He was also recently part of the support staff of the South Africa women’s team that led Harmanpreet Kaur’s 4-1 T20I series win over India.

Mumbai Indians, languishing in the bottom half of the table, will look to bounce back when they take on Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday, April 29.
