Greece: 89-year-old man arrested, 4 injured after shooting at Athens social security office, courthouse
Greek police on Tuesday arrested an 89-year-old man accused of carrying out two separate shootings in Athens that injured at least four people, officials said. After being at large for several hours, the suspect was detained in the port city of Patras, about 200 kilometers west of the capital. He was tracked to a hotel near a bus station and found with a weapon, according to state broadcaster ERT, quoted by the Associated Press.According to AFP, the shooting was reportedly caused by complaints related to pension payments, and the suspect was also believed to have psychological problems. Authorities are investigating documents he allegedly left in court that reveal his motives.Police said the man first opened fire at a social security office in the Keramikos area of central Athens, wounding an employee. Officers who arrived at the scene provided first aid before the gunman fled.He was later suspected of opening fire again on the ground floor of a court building in another part of central Athens, where several people were injured.Stratis Donias, head of the Athens judicial staff union, said preliminary reports showed the gunman fired into the floor inside an office, hitting shrapnel that slightly injured at least three female court workers. Another woman was taken to hospital as a precaution.Alexandros Varveris, head of the National Social Security Fund (EFKA), said the suspect had gone to the fourth floor of the building and opened fire after warning an employee to remain quiet. The bullet hit the leg of another employee. He said it appeared the attacker had hidden the weapon under his trench coat.Gun violence is relatively rare in Greece, where firearm ownership is permitted but strictly regulated.
