Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections: Former judge tells youth to accept election defeat gracefully

Chennai: Not everyone who contests elections wins, says former judge… Madras High Court Justice N Kirubakaran warned that political parties, especially children and young followers of actor Vijay’s TVK, should develop the mental maturity to accept defeat if the results are not in their favour. He suggested that before the counting of votes begins, all political leaders, including actor Vijay, should issue statements urging children and youth to accept both victory and defeat gracefully. Expressing concern over ‘shocking social media posts made by supporters of some political parties’, the former judge said, “The high turnout in the 17th Legislative Assembly elections was encouraging.”

Justice Kirubakaran pointed out that not all parties can win the elections, yet some people remain under the illusion that their party will definitely win. Children and youth often strongly believe that the party and leader they are associated with must win. He said that if the results are not in their favour, they should develop the mental maturity to accept defeat.Pointing out that leaders like Indira Gandhi, CN Annadurai and J Jayalalitha had also faced electoral defeats several times, Justice Kirubakaran suggested that before the counting of votes, all political leaders, as well as actors, should issue statements asking children and youth to accept both victory and defeat gracefully. She said families should keep an eye on how their children and youth members respond. “If your leaders win, celebrate; if not, prepare for the next election,” he said. He said youth have responsibilities towards their families, including taking care of their parents.
