Google looking to invest in AI infra, servers and drone manufacturing in India

Bengaluru: Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav on Friday said Google is exploring the possibility of investing in artificial intelligence infrastructure as well as manufacturing of servers and drones in India. This indicates a possible expansion of the ambitions of the tech giants in the country beyond cloud and startup programs.“Google is exploring the possibility of investing in AI infrastructure and manufacturing of servers and drones in India,” Vaishnav said in a post on X after meeting with Google executives. The manufacturing reference is notable as Google’s India announcements have largely focused on cloud, startup ecosystem support and AI skills initiatives rather than local hardware manufacturing exploration. This development comes just months after Google Cloud announced what it described as its largest India investment to date, a proposed $15 billion investment over 2026-2030 to set up its first AI hub in India in Visakhapatnam. The project includes gigawatt-scale data center operations, expanded fiber infrastructure and AI compute capabilities. In recent months, Google has furthered its India AI ecosystem through several accelerators and startup initiatives focused on artificial intelligence.Separately, Google opened applications for the third cohort of Google Play Accelerator India, an equity-free program for AI-powered apps and game startups.Last month, Google for Startups Accelerator India had invited applications from AI-first startups working in areas including agentic AI, multimodal AI, sovereign AI and “physical AI” covering robotics and manufacturing applications. The program also offered access to cloud TPU and AI infrastructure.Google has additionally supported Indian AI startups through partnerships such as Accel Atoms, where selected companies received funding support, compute credits, and access to Google Cloud, Gemini, and DeepMind infrastructure.
