Hostel life at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur became happier when a group of students decided not to let the raw mangoes that fell due to a storm go to waste. Instead of ignoring the mangoes scattered around the campus, he turned them into homemade pickles right inside his hostel – and the internet is loving every bit of it.The now-viral video was posted on Instagram by student Ajay Patel, giving viewers a fun glimpse of the pickle making session going on inside BC Roy Hall. Introducing his friend Narayan in the clip, Patel jokingly says that IIT students don’t just study engineering – they also know how to make mango pickle.Narayan then walks the audience through the process like a professional. He says that after the recent storm that hit the campus, many unripe mangoes fell from the trees around the hostel. The students collected them, cut them and mixed the pieces with turmeric and salt before keeping them aside to dry in the sun for a few days.He also proudly displays the spice mix he has prepared for the pickle. According to them, the mix includes mustard seeds, fennel, nigella seeds and fenugreek – basically all the ingredients needed for that classic homey flavor that many Indians instantly recognise.The video also shows a glimpse of mango trees standing inside the hostel premises. Patel explains that there are a lot of them in BC Roy Hall and due to the ongoing stormy weather, mangoes are falling regularly.
