New Delhi: Defense Minister stressed the need for strong infrastructure on the border -Rajnath Singh The Border Roads Organization (BRO) has been tasked with developing infrastructure along the India-Myanmar border spanning about 1,600 kilometres, an initiative that will further strengthen border management capabilities, it said on Wednesday.Rajnath, who chaired the meeting of the Defense Ministry’s Parliamentary Consultative Committee on BRO here on Wednesday, said that through this network, all-weather connectivity is being ensured even in remote and high altitude areas, thereby strengthening operational mobility and defense preparedness. The progress under the Border Road Development Program 2023-28, under which more than 1,000 road and infrastructure projects are being implemented, including new construction, upgrades and maintenance works to further strengthen border connectivity, was also discussed during the meeting.The Minister also appreciated the efforts of BRO towards enhancing connectivity in the North-Eastern region and Left Wing Extremism affected areas, which will contribute to security and regional development. “BRO has facilitated the mobility of defense forces and worked towards bringing positive change in the lives of the residents,” he said. Practical discussions were held on issues related to defence, infrastructure development and ongoing strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening national security and operational preparedness.Drawing the attention of the members of the Parliamentary Advisory Committee towards the important aspect of ‘technology utilisation’, the Minister said that BRO is rapidly adopting modern construction techniques by making best use of technologies like high altitude equipment, modular bridges and precast technologies.“BRO has increased both the quality and speed of its work. This shows that we are building a future-ready infrastructure,” he said. He reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthen BRO with the aim of budgetary support, modern equipment and personnel welfare. Established in 1960, BRO has constructed over 64,000 km of roads, 1,179 bridges, 22 airfields and seven tunnels, thereby significantly enhancing operational readiness and socio-economic development in the border areas.
