New Delhi: The Delhi government has approved the creation of nine posts of Wildlife Inspector in the Forest and Wildlife Department, a major step to strengthen wildlife conservation and enforcement in the city.Till now, there was only one approved wildlife inspector in Delhi, who was posted at the department’s headquarters. The absence of dedicated inspectors in the four field divisions had seriously hampered field-level enforcement, prevention of illegal activities, minimization of human-wildlife conflict, and biodiversity management.In a statement, the government said the move reflects its commitment to wildlife conservation and biodiversity conservation amid growing urban environmental challenges. The recruitment rules of wildlife inspectors have been amended with the approval of Lieutenant Governor And notified through gazette notification.Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said the decision marks a long-awaited reform in environmental governance. “The deployment of wildlife inspectors in the field divisions of Delhi enables our teams to protect wildlife, curb poaching and proactively resolve conflicts,” he said.The Delhi government said the induction of nine wildlife inspectors is expected to significantly enhance the capacity of the department in wildlife conservation, prevention of illegal activities, human-wildlife conflict mitigation and biodiversity management across the city, terming it a major step towards strengthening institutions for a sustainable urban ecosystem.
