Ahmedabad: What started as a routine murder investigation in Vatva took a dramatic turn when the police unearthed a major counterfeiting racket earlier this week. Police have now seized fake Rs 500 notes worth about Rs 29 lakh and arrested six people. The six arrested persons have been identified as Suraj Sahni, 20, of Narol; Ravikumar Shah, 23, Virendra Baghel, 25, and Chandramohan Sharma, 23, residents of Vatva; And a minor has been detained. Additionally, police used technical intelligence to arrest 49-year-old Meraj Rabari from Banaskantha. This breakthrough came when Zone-7 Local Crime Branch (LCB) was investigating the death of Imran Sindha. A search of Sindha’s flat in Satej Homes in Vatva revealed a sophisticated setup of laptops, color printers and paper used to make fake Indian currency, which immediately triggered a parallel investigation.According to the police, Sindha, who has now been made the main accused along with his syndicate members, had rented the premises in March. The network allegedly used the apartment as a mini-mint to print high quality fake Rs 500 notes for circulation in the open market. Investigators suspect that fake notes worth around Rs 60 lakh may have already been recovered in the operation.Following the paper trail, joint teams of LCB and Vatva Police traced the materials hidden at locations in Agra, Uttar Pradesh and Dholpur, Rajasthan, and ultimately recovered fake notes with face value of Rs 28.95 lakh.
