A ‘lake’ so huge that it is bigger than Japan and touches five countries

At first glance, the Caspian Sea appears as an ocean that stretches endlessly to the horizon, touching the shores of five countries. Yet scientists classify it not as a sea, but as Earth’s largest lake, a vast inland lake covering some 371,000 square kilometers, larger than Japan in size. Spread across Europe and Asia, it is bordered by Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Iran. Its vast expanse, distinctive chemistry and geopolitical importance make it one of the planet’s most captivating geographical wonders. From ancient Silk Road commerce to contemporary oil pipelines, the Caspian has deeply influenced the historical, economic, and ecological narrative of the region. Despite this, little is known to the world about its hybrid lake-sea status, lucrative caviar trade and important role in global energy politics.

‘Gross insult’: Congress takes a dig at PM Modi after US official’s ‘permitted India’ comment on Russian oil. india news

'Good actor': White House on 'temporary permission' to India on Russian oil purchases

PM Narendra Modi

New Delhi: Congress on Wednesday sharply criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi and questioned his silence in the case of a US official. repeated The United States has temporarily “allowed” India to buy Russian oil.In a post on Twitter, the opposition party highlighted comments by White House Press Secretary Carolyn Leavitt, who called India a “good actor” while using the word “permission”. The Congress asked, “Why is the Government of India not objecting to this blatant insult to our sovereignty and dignity? Instead of protecting India’s honour, Prime Minister Modi clearly prefers to remain silent.”

‘Good actor’: White House on ‘temporary permission’ to India on Russian oil purchases

The party sought answers from the BJP-led government and alleged that PM Modi’s silence was tantamount to tacit acceptance. The Congress said, “So the country should ask: What are they afraid of? Why are India’s decisions being decided from outside? Why is Narendra Modi being blackmailed by the United States? The people of India deserve answers. Because India’s sovereignty cannot be compromised.”Read this also India once rejected pressure to buy Russian oil. So why did it need an American ‘concession’ now?Levitt said during a media briefing on Tuesday that Washington has given New Delhi “permission” to temporarily buy Russian oil to address disruptions in global energy supplies amid the Middle East conflict. He stressed that India has been a “good actor” by stopping purchases of previously approved Russian oil and that the measure would not yield significant financial benefits to Russia.“I have spoken to the President and the Secretary of the Treasury, and the national security team has made this decision because our allies like India have been good actors. As we work to address the temporary global oil supply gap caused by the Iranians, we have temporarily allowed India to accept Russian oil,” Leavitt told reporters.Read this also ‘Mind your own business’: Kamal Haasan’s sharp message to Trump on India’s oil policyHis comments come amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following the assassination of Iran’s 86-year-old supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in joint US-Israel strikes on February 28. In retaliation, Iran targeted Israel and US assets in several Gulf countries. Several senior Iranian officials were also killed in the attacks. On March 5, US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant announced a 30-day waiver, allowing New Delhi to buy Russian crude.Last year, US President Donald Trump had imposed 50% tariffs on India, including 25% on Russian oil imports. Washington had alleged that New Delhi’s purchases were “funding Putin’s war machine” in Ukraine. In February, India and the US announced a delayed bilateral trade agreement, under which US tariffs on India were reduced to 18%. Later that month, the US Supreme Court, through a majority decision, invalidated Trump’s tariffs, prompting both countries to postpone further trade negotiations.

bengal flood flood of human stupidity

TeaHe expressed concern that the combined forces of climate change and human action could spell disaster for the fragile ecosystem of North Bengal, a point that had been raised in recent years but ignored. This proved costly, as a massive disaster struck this region of mountains, lush foothills (the Dooars) and alluvial plains with fast-flowing streams on 5–6 October. More than 300 mm of rainfall in 12 hours caused hundreds of landslides in Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling districts. Rivers burst their banks, roads were blocked, villages were cut off or destroyed. Adding to the human suffering list, more than 40 people have died, while 10,000 people are taking shelter in relief camps. “Out of the 32 cattle I have, 22 have either died or been lost. In our tea garden, at least 70 families are affected,” says Sikander Majhi, 41, a resident of Tandu tea garden in Nagarakata block of Jalpaiguri district. North Bengal was also forewarned: On October 4, 2023, a glacial lake outburst in Sikkim sank the Teesta III dam and caused havoc downstream.

India’s next T20 dynasty: Sanju Samson and Co will carry forward Rohit-Kohli’s legacy

“Time to take the T20 game forward for the next generation.”

When Virat Kohli said these words after India won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, It sounded like the closing line of an epic movie. The hero had climaxed, the crowd stood and the screen slowly went black.

Except that Indian cricket rarely remains quiet for long.

Along with Kohli, captain Rohit Sharma and always reliable Ravindra Jadeja also opted out of T20 International. For a generation of fans, it felt like the end of a golden chapter. Rohit’s fearless powerplay hitting, Kohli’s calculated chasing, and Jadeja’s three-dimensional magic had defined India’s T20 identity for years.

Naturally, the question came even before the festivities were over. Now who will fill this gap?

Two years later, the answer came with fireworks.

India didn’t just defend its crown in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. They did it with a team that looked like a natural continuation of everything the previous era had built. It was not about replacing Rohit, Kohli or Jadeja. Instead, a new generation has quietly taken up those responsibilities and shaped them into their own.

At the center of that story was Sanju Samson, who entered the tournament as another talented batsman and came out as the Player of the Tournament. Around him were those names who were hovering around India’s T20 plans for a long time. Ishaan Kishan, Akshar Patel and Shivam Dubey stepped into roles that suddenly seemed bigger than before.

It was less of a reboot and more of a perfect sequel. The kind where the original heroes are still felt in the story, but new characters make the film their own.

If the Rohit-Kohli-Jadeja era was the original blockbuster, this new group made sure that the sequel does not disappoint.

samson new standard

If one player summed up India’s transformation, This was Sanju Samson.

He did not even start the final eleven of the World Cup. Samson spent the first half of the tournament on the bench while India tested the combination. But when the knockout stage came, the management threw him into the deep end as an opening batsman.

Samson reacted like a man who had been waiting for this script for years.

First of all, he played an unbeaten inning of 97 runs in the Super 8 match against West Indies in Kolkata. Then he scored 89 in the semi-finals. When the final came, he calmly scored another 89.

Three big matches. Three innings that shaped India’s title race.

Samson’s role was crucial in India’s T20 World Cup title defence. (PTI photo)

By the end of the tournament, Samson had scored 321 runs in five innings, the most by an Indian in a T20 World Cup.

Former India captain Anil Kumble described him as a mixture of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli and it actually makes sense to watch him bat.

Sometimes Samson looked like Kohli. Calm, alert and in complete control of the chase. At other moments he changed gears and attacked like Rohit in the powerplay, caring more about the scoreboard than individual milestones.

When a reporter asked if he was disappointed at missing two potential centuries against West Indies and England, Samson shrugged it off. If his team had not won then 97 and 89 would have meant nothing.

Now this is the kind of answer that has Rohit Sharma written all over it.

Ishan Kishan is the owner of number 3

Over the years, India has been raising a small but persistent question in T20 cricket.

Who is our batsman at number three?

In 2026 World Cup, Ishan Kishan answered this strongly.

Kishan scored 317 runs in nine matches at a strike rate of 193. After three half-centuries, he became the fourth highest run scorer in the entire tournament.

But their story had started months ago.

Kishan returned to the national team after leading Jharkhand to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title as captain. When India hosted New Zealand soon after, he ensured that the comeback made headlines. Kishan scored a T20I century in the final match of that series.

The World Cup just continued that momentum.

Ishan Kishan cashed in on his T20 World Cup opportunity in a big way. (PTI photo)

Along with Samson and Abhishek Sharma, Kishan became part of one of the most dangerous top-orders of the tournament. His work was simple. Keep the pace fast and never let the innings flow.

He played his role well in the final also.

Kishan scored 54 runs in just 25 balls as India scored 255 runs against New Zealand, making the match difficult for the opposition.

And he wasn’t done yet.

Two brilliant catches were taken during New Zealand’s chase. One dismissed Rachin Ravindra. Another near the boundary sent Tim Seifert back.

Runs, energy and fast fielding. Kishan brought everything to the table.

India had spent a lot of time searching for stability at number three. This time the answer came with some arrogance.

Akshar Patel: 3 Dimensional Force

For years, when people talked about players who could impact the game in three departments, the conversation always started with Ravindra Jadeja.

At the 2026 World Cup, Axar Patel quietly reminded everyone that he was also involved in that conversation.

Akshar took 11 wickets in eight matches and also gave three wickets in the final. His economy rate hovered around 8.20, making him one of India’s most reliable middle overs bowlers.

But the numbers only tell half the story.

India have made up for Jadeja’s absence with Axar Patel in the T20Is.

In the semi-final against England, he took two brilliant catches which swung the momentum towards India. Whenever the team needed to score runs quickly, he performed well with the bat.

What was most impressive was how naturally he played the role that Jadeja had once played.

Akshar did not try to become “the next Ravindra Jadeja”. He just did what the game demanded at that moment.

And most of the time, it worked.

Shivam Dubey: Power Switch

Every good T20 team needs someone who can change the mood of the game in ten balls.

For India in 2026, That player was Shivam Dubey.

Two years ago, he had pulled out of the 2024 World Cup after facing criticism. This time he returned with the answer.

Dubey scored 235 runs at an average of 39 and an average of around 165. He also hit 17 sixes, many of which came when India needed momentum early.

Shivam Dubey silenced the critics of the 2024 World Cup with his power in 2026. (PTI photo)

What made his tournament special was his flexibility.

He batted at four different positions during the competition. Sometimes he would go in early. Sometimes he even died.

The viewpoint never changed. See the ball. hit the ball. Hit it hard.

Even with Hardik Pandya in the team, Dubey became another finishing weapon for India. Even when Hardik was struggling, there was always someone ready to bring the game back.

And that kind of depth is worth gold in T20 cricket.

next chapter

The funny thing about India’s 2026 victory is that it never really felt like a change.

Samson took responsibility at the top. Kishan kept the engine running. Akshar controlled the middle overs. Dubey threw punches at the end of the innings.

Different names. Same responsibilities.

Perhaps this is what Virat Kohli meant that night in 2024.

The next generation took the T20 game forward.

And two years later, they showed that the story of Indian T20 cricket does not end with a great team.

It just moved on to the next.

New CAFE-3 norms may impact small car production and prices, ETAuto

<p>“/><figcaption class=People aware of the proposed policy said that since carmakers would be discouraged from manufacturing small cars that meet CAFE-related regulatory norms, the gap in migration of people from two-wheelers to cars could widen.

Small car makers may face more regulatory challenges as revised draft of CAFE-3 proposes vehicle improvements fuel efficiency And reducing carbon emissions has been implemented. Those involved in the deliberations said the latest proposed amendments would support larger vehicles, especially electric and hybrid electric vehicles.

with corporate average fuel efficiency With the (CAFE) issue unresolved due to tussle among car manufacturers, the PM’s office has intervened in the matter and involved the petroleum and heavy industries ministries besides the road transport and power ministries to finalize the norms. This is the third draft of CAFE-3 in the last two years.

CAFE refers to government-regulated standards that mandate a minimum average fuel efficiency and the maximum CO2 emissions level for the entire fleet of vehicles sold by a car manufacturer. Instead of examining individual models, it measures a weighted average of all cars produced by a manufacturer.

According to the latest draft of CAFE-3, which has not been released yet, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) has proposed to eliminate the humiliation (additional allowance) or relief for small car manufacturers. It has introduced a range-extended electric vehicle (reeve), which will have a volume deviation factor (VDF) of 3, similar to electric cars. VDF is a targeted government measure to promote sales of low-polluting vehicles such as EVs, REEVs and hybrids.

Removing the disincentive for small cars is expected to push up prices of entry-level petrol cars, said people aware of the latest changes. He said REEV has been introduced keeping in mind the current low penetration of EV charging infrastructure, range anxiety among buyers and uncertainty of battery life. There is debate over whether REEVs should be considered equivalent to EVs because, unlike EVs, these vehicles have tailpipe emissions when the engine is running.

People aware of the proposed policy said that since carmakers would be discouraged from manufacturing small cars that meet CAFE-related regulatory norms, the gap in migration of people from two-wheelers to cars could widen. Industry officials said as per the draft norms, the cost of new cars under the proposed CAFE-3 regime will increase by about 10 per cent as carmakers will have to add more fuel-saving technologies to meet the new standards or face penalties.

UAE confirms six months' stock of essential commodities, assures no shortage amid market downturn
The UAE has confirmed six months of strategic reserves of essential commodities as authorities intensified market inspections nationwide/Representative Image

The UAE Ministry of Economy and Tourism has stepped up inspections in markets to ensure stable prices and availability of essential commodities, assuring residents that the country has strategic reserves of key commodities that can meet demand for up to six months. The ministry said inspection teams are conducting daily checks at shops and retail outlets across the country. These inspections are being conducted in coordination with economic development departments in all emirates through a joint national monitoring team. The objective of this effort is to prevent unreasonable price increases, prevent unfair commercial practices and maintain close surveillance on market activity.Officials said retailers must follow consumer protection rules, especially those governing pricing of essential goods. Under the current policy, traders cannot raise prices of certain basic commodities without prior permission from the ministry and the national committee responsible for monitoring price changes. This rule applies to nine essential goods: cooking oil, eggs, dairy products, rice, sugar, poultry, legumes, bread and wheat. The ministry also discussed the recent increase in prices of onion and tomato in the last two days. Officials said the increase is temporary and linked to the impact of the regional crisis. Additional supplies of these vegetables have already been delivered to the markets in large quantities to stabilize availability.Officials stressed that essential goods should be available in sufficient quantities and consumers should have access to a variety of options. Officials said prices are expected to return to normal levels soon due to increased supply. The ministry said the UAE maintains a strategic stockpile of essential commodities capable of meeting market demand for six months. These reserves are distributed to different regions of the country through a system designed to strengthen supply chains and allow authorities to respond quickly to market needs during emergencies.Officials also confirmed that shipping and supply operations through the country’s entry points are continuing normally. Supply chains remain efficient and goods are reaching local markets without any interruption. The UAE also relies on an extensive network of international partner markets that supply imports of a variety of goods.
