India's fossil fuel power generation sees steep decline in March amid push for renewable energy

New Delhi: India, along with the US, Turkey, South Africa, Germany and the Netherlands, saw a decline in power generation from fossil fuels in March following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz due to military conflict in West Asia and disruption in energy supplies, the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) said in its latest report on Wednesday. It said the decline in electricity generation was offset by a large increase in solar and wind power generation. The dataset covers 87% of global coal electricity generation and more than 60% of gas-fired generation from countries that disclose real-time data.

According to the report, total global electricity production from fossil fuels has declined by 1% year-on-year, with the exception of China, where it increased by 2%. “In countries with real-time electricity data, coal-fired electricity generation declined by 3.5%, and gas-fired electricity generation declined by 4.0% in March,” it said.“This was due to increases in solar (14%) and wind (8%) generation. Hydroelectric generation also saw a small increase (2%), but this was more than offset by the decline in nuclear power generation.”The think tank said the data runs contrary to widespread expectations that coal power generation would increase amid a drop in energy supplies caused by the conflict. It also saw seaborne coal transportation volumes fall 3% in March to the lowest level since 2021.“Record growth in global clean energy generation, particularly solar and wind, has helped mitigate the impact of the latest fossil fuel crisis. The increase in clean electricity has offset the decline in gas-fired power generation following the Hormuz blockade, preventing a surge in coal-fired power generation,” said Lauri Myllyvirta, lead analyst at CREA. “To mitigate the impacts of the current crisis and make such recurring global emergencies a thing of the past, it is essential to use this moment to accelerate the global energy transition. The report said that in the US and India, growth in solar power was the biggest reason for the decline in fossil fuel-based power generation. India added 55.3 GW of renewable energy capacity in FY 2025-26 and improved its global ranking to third place after China and the US.

New Delhi: Nearly 12 lakh households have so far conducted self-enumeration across 11 states and union territories for the Houselisting Operation (HLO) phase of Census 2027. More than a race: Stories that define the Times Internet Half Marathon

More than 15,000 runners gathered with a common purpose of running, yet each had a uniquely their own journey. The most compelling stories emerged from the Under-29 category (Men), where determination, discipline and dreams took center stage. These were not just races won by the clock, but stories earned through years of perseverance. The category was led by Vipul Kumar, who took the top spot with an impressive chip time of 1:10:48. His performance stood as a testament to focus and consistent training. Vipul Kumar’s winning run reflects discipline, focus and countless hours of unseen effort behind the scenes. Behind that time is a personal early-morning journey, silent discipline and a relentless belief in pushing one’s limits.

Vipul Kumar

Behind him was 26-year-old Tsetan Namgyal, the first runner-up with a chip time of 1:11:02, whose journey in racing began just four years ago. Currently serving in the Indian Army, Namgyal considers marathons as much more than a pursuit of fitness. For him, running is a deep calling, one full of purpose, discipline and personal growth. His ambition is clear: to participate in marathons across the country and beyond.

With over a decade of experience, his journey has been shaped by both passion and failures. While preparing for a career in the armed forces, an unfortunate back injury changed his path. Still, his resolve remains steadfast. Today, he has his sights set on competing in international marathons and pursuing the dream that never faded.

The Under-29 category, like the marathon itself, was a reminder that every runner brings more than speed to a race; They bring stories of resilience, ambition and unwavering spirit.Ultimately, it wasn’t just about crossing the finish line. It was about the journeys that got there.

Indian-origin Meenu Batra, who has been living in the US for 35 years, detained by ICE: ‘This doesn’t mean you can stay here forever’

35 साल से अमेरिका में रह रही भारतीय मूल की मीनू बत्रा को ICE ने हिरासत में लिया: 'इसका मतलब यह नहीं है कि आप हमेशा के लिए यहां रह सकते हैं'

Meenu Batra, an Indian-origin woman who worked as an interpreter in Texas courts, was detained by ICE.

Meenu Batra, a 53-year-old Indian-origin woman who had been living in the US for the past 35 years, was detained by ICE agents in Texas, who asked her if she knew she had a deportation order and was in the country illegally. The Texas Observer reported that Batra is Texas’ only licensed Hindi, Punjabi and Urdu legal interpreter and is often contracted to help South Asians through the immigration court system. On March 17, while she was traveling to Wisconsin for a case, she was detained by ICE as she was going through security at Harlingen International Airport.Batra said in his statement that the people who arrested him did not have any visible badges and were not wearing uniforms. One of the agents asked her if she knew she was illegal. She replied that her work authorization status, for which she had regularly applied after being granted the legal status called a stay of removal by a New Jersey immigration judge decades ago, was good for the next four years. The agent replied, “That doesn’t mean you can stay here forever.” Batra told the Texas Observer that she had read a lot of news and so she followed their orders because she understood that if she said anything, they would accuse her of trying to avoid arrest. Deepak Ahluwalia, a California and Texas-based immigration lawyer representing Batra, filed the habeas petition. After handcuffing her, agents took Batra to ICE’s field office in Harlingen, where she was a familiar face as she had worked on many cases that required translation. “Batra was taken to various holding cells for 24 hours without food or water, first in Harlingen and then to the El Valle Detention Center outside Raymondville in neighboring Willacy County. “As of mid-April, she remains there without the consistent medical care she needed after surgery in December,” the Texas Observer reports.

Batra’s youngest son is in the army

Batra’s lawyers said the US government never told him it planned to deport him. One of Batra’s children recently joined the army and she filed a parole application for him. His lawyers have also filed a temporary restraining order to prevent ICE from moving him to another detention center. The Department of Homeland Security denied this and said that Batra had received a final order of removal from an immigration judge in 2000 and that she would remain in ICE custody until her removal.Ahluwalia said, “What is completely bizarre about this case (along with others) under the current administration is that they are detaining these individuals without any notice or resolution, and circumventing the laws by removing them to countries like Sudan. This is a clear violation of our laws and our client’s rights and we will fight until she is released.”
