Aviation Minister told Rajya Sabha, Indigo gave Rs 163.9 crore in travel coupons

New Delhi: Compensation worth Rs 163.92 crore has already been paid in the form of travel coupons to passengers affected by the mass cancellation of flights by IndiGo in early December, Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday.Responding to supplementary questions during Question Hour, he said more than 3.6 lakh customers were affected by the incident and Rs 43.8 crore has been distributed so far as compensation after the ticket verification process. Nadu assured that the government is taking several necessary measures to ensure that such incidents do not happen again. Hundreds of flights operated by IndiGo were canceled in the first week of December due to shortage of pilots after the expiry of Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL). The government blamed the airline for lack of adequate planning in implementing the second phase of FDTL norms. This gave the airline a one-time exemption from implementing the norms. Responding to a specific question on the IndiGo crisis, the minister said the civil aviation ministry is consulting airlines on a daily basis before implementing the new norms. He said, “But even after this has happened, we are still taking more precautions so that such a situation does not happen again.”Saying that the ministry is engaged with the airline to ensure greater compensation to passengers, Nadu said the airline has also extended coupons or travel coupons worth Rs 10,000 as a gesture of care. “For this, Rs 163.9 crore has already been distributed to the passengers. And more, if they can verify their travel timings at that specific time,” Naidu said.Regarding the IndiGo incident, the minister said that DGCA is in constant touch with the airlines. “This was a typical example where the new FDTL norms came into force and it was the airlines that had to look at their internal operations and say if FDTL is going to be implemented, how many more pilots do we need and how will we route the crew rostering so that operations are not impacted,” Naidu said. Naidu said, “In these three months alone, IndiGo has appointed more than 246 pilots… We have also brought 10% operations to IndiGo. Therefore, several necessary measures have been taken so that such an incident does not happen again.”

Congress leader Kharge raised LPG crisis in Rajya Sabha, government hit back on 'politics on shortage'

New Delhi: Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday raised the LPG crisis arising out of conflict in West Asia and asked why the government did not plan in advance for LPG imports or make alternative arrangements despite being aware of regional tensions. “If the government was aware of regional tensions then why did it not make alternative arrangements? Why was the opposition not taken on board for a coordinated response to public concerns.” Why is the government not taking any measures to stop hoarding and black marketing of LPG? This crisis not only exposes our mismanagement but also our weak domestic and foreign policy.”Kharge’s presentation, which lasted more than the 3 minutes given to each member during Zero Hour, drew a sharp reaction from House leader J.P. Nadda, who accused the opposition of creating chaos and indulging in politics over the LPG shortage instead of standing with the government as it manages a situation not of India’s own making but entirely caused by international developments. Reminding Kharge of Petroleum Minister Hardeep Puri’s earlier statement in the Lok Sabha on the LPG situation, Nadda reminded that Congress MPs had not even listened to him. Nadda claimed that a Congress leader himself was caught hoarding LPG. Earlier, Kharge said the LPG crisis has created panic across the country, which has adversely impacted restaurants, hostels and commercial establishments besides poor, middle class families. Recalling that India imports LPG to meet 60% of its domestic needs, he said 90% of these imports are through the Strait of Hormuz. “Both availability and price stability of LPG have become a matter of serious concern...MSMEs and commercial users are facing problems in securing LPG refills. It is worrying that some establishments have closed operations while some are paying up to Rs 5000 per cylinder.”Pointing to Puri’s claim that there is no shortage of LPG, Kharge alleged that the ground reality is different. “When India was issuing advisories to its citizens in Iran warning of the deterioration in the situation, it should have also warned of the adverse impact on vital sea lanes and energy supplies. We should have been prepared accordingly. The government was aware of the impending situation in the Strait of Hormuz. Therefore, if advance planning and alternative arrangements for LPG imports had been made, we would not have had to face this crisis,” he said.

Sanju Samson up, Ishan Kishan down: Ricky Ponting explains the bold decision that shaped India’s T20 World Cup title defense

Ricky Ponting said India’s decision to promote Sanju Samson to open the batting and send Ishan Kishan at No. 3 proved crucial to their T20 World Cup 2026 victory. Following this change, India became the first team in the history of the tournament to successfully defend the title. Samson had earlier lost his place at the top after a poor performance in the series against New Zealand.

Kishan opened for India in the first five matches of the World Cup, but was dropped down the order after being out for a duck in the Super 8 match against South Africa. Once Samson returned to the top, He scored 321 runs in five matches at an average of 80.25..

‘I have to make a big call’

Ponting said that Samson flourished because he got full support from the captain and the coaching staff, adding that a player often needs trust, assurance and confidence from the team management to perform at his best.

“It was a really big decision – moving Ishan Kishan lower down the order to get Sanju Samson back at the top. It’s a big decision, but in the end it worked out really well,” Ponting said on the ICC.

“As a player – and I’m speaking here as a coach and former captain too – you really need the support of the captain and the coaching staff. Sometimes, just a pat on the back or a hand on the shoulder, when someone says, ‘Look mate, we’re with you, we believe in you, and we think you’re the right man for the role,’ that’s all a player needs to hear,” Ponting said.

‘We want Sanju’

Samson found his top form with an unbeaten 97 in India’s virtual quarter-final against West Indies. He then scored 89 runs in the seven-run win over England in the semi-finals. before scoring another 89 in the final India defeated New Zealand by 96 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

“When you have quality like Sanju, and the confidence of the captain and coach behind you, then only great things can happen. I don’t know what happened inside the Indian camp in the last few weeks, but it certainly looked like that from the outside.

“It seemed as if the team had decided: ‘If we want to win this tournament, we need Sanju at the top, playing his best cricket and full of confidence.’ And that’s exactly what they got,” Ponting said.

Samson was named Player of the Tournament for his outstanding performance. He was also included in the ICC Team of the Tournament along with Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah.

His participation in IPL 2026 is uncertain after he was seen on crutches during the BCCI Naman Awards 2026 in Mumbai.Rana was to receive the award for Best International Debut (Male), but he could not walk up to the stage due to his injury, forcing Arun Dhumal to step down and present him with the award. The fast bowler later underwent knee surgery on February 9 and is expected to take two to three months to recover, raising doubts over whether he will be fit for the upcoming IPL season. Fastest IPL century or Chris Gayle’s 175 runs? Vaibhav Suryavanshi selected in Naman Awards

Vaibhav Suryavanshi said that his dream is to break Chris Gayle’s record of highest individual score in T20 cricket. Back in 2013, Gayle scored 175 runs in 66 balls For Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) against the now defunct Pune Warriors at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru – a record that still stands.

Since then, players like Aaron Finch, Sahibzada Farhan and Dewald Brewis have come close, but no one has managed to surpass Gayle’s historic innings. During the Naman Awards on Sunday, celebrity presenter Harsha Bhogle asked Suryavanshi which of three records he would like to break – fastest IPL century, six sixes in an over, or highest individual T20 score.

Bhogle asked, “I will tell you three things and ask three questions. You tell me which one you desire most. Six sixes in an over. Chris Gayle, like you, was a left-handed batsman and scored 175 runs in the IPL. Or the fastest IPL century.”

In response, Suryavanshi said, “Sir, I want to break the record of 175 runs.”

Suryavanshi keeps raising the bar

On April 28, 2025, the left-handed batsman scored a century in 35 balls for Rajasthan Royals against Gujarat Titans at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. In the process, he became the youngest centurion in T20 cricket, helping the Royals chase down 210 in just 15.5 overs and win by eight wickets.

Earlier that season, Suryavanshi had already made headlines by becoming the youngest debutant in IPL history at the age of 14 years and 23 days during the Royals’ clash against Lucknow Super Giants.

Royals had bought the teenage sensation for Rs 1.10 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction, and he announced himself in style by launching Shardul Thakur with a huge six.

How Azhar Mahmood played IPL despite the ban on Pakistani players since 2009. Throwback | cricket news

How Azhar Mahmood played IPL despite the ban on Pakistani players since 2009. recycling

Pakistani players have been missing from the Indian Premier League (IPL) for more than a decade. The last Pakistan cricketer to feature in the tournament was all-rounder Azhar Mahmood, who played in the league between 2012 and 2015, although he did so after entering the auction as an English player. His appearance came years after Pakistani cricketers’ participation in the IPL ended following the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks. The spotlight around Pakistan players and franchise leagues returned recently when mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed was selected by Sunrisers Leeds during the player auction for The Hundred. The franchise, owned by Chennai-based Sun Group, paid GBP 190000 (approximately Rs 2.34 crore) after a bidding competition with Trent Rockets. With the move, Ahmed became the first Pakistani player to be signed by an Indian-owned franchise in the tournament. His signing also ended speculation that Indian-owned teams in The Hundred would avoid Pakistani players, as has been the case in the IPL since 2009 due to strained diplomatic relations between India and Pakistan.

Pakistani players in IPL

The first season of IPL in 2008 featured many Pakistani cricketers including Shoaib Akhtar, Shahid Afridi and Sohail Tanvir. The tournament saw players from both countries share dressing rooms and compete in the new T20 league.Shahid Afridi played for Deccan Chargers, while fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar represented Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Misbah-ul-Haq was a part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) team.Among these, fast bowler Sohail Tanvir left the biggest impression. Playing for the league-winning Rajasthan Royals (RR) in 2008, Tanvir finished the season with 22 wickets and claimed the Purple Cap for most wickets in the tournament. His best performance came against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) when he returned figures of 6/14.However, the situation changed after the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks. Following the attacks, political relations between India and Pakistan were suspended. Later, Pakistan also barred its players from traveling to India for the IPL citing security concerns. At the time, many franchises had expressed disappointment over the absence of Pakistani players from the league.Joy Bhattacharya, who was the then team leader of KKR, said that the team would miss the players from Pakistan. Akhtar, Umar Gul, Salman Butt and Mohammad Hafeez all represented the franchise in 2008.He had said, “We were like a family. Shoaib and Umar are not only good cricketers but also popular among their teammates at Knight Riders. We will definitely miss them a lot.”Similar views were shared by Amrit Mathur, who was the chief executive of Delhi Daredevils at that time.Mathur had said, “We will miss the Pakistani players as they were key members of our team.”What was initially expected to be a temporary break turned into a lengthy absence. With time, it became difficult to obtain a No Objection Certificate from the Pakistan Cricket Board. At the same time, IPL franchises were hesitant to bid for players who could not get visas to travel to India.

Azhar Mahmood: Last Pakistani player in IPL

While Pakistan players have largely stayed away from the IPL since 2009, Azhar Mahmood appeared in the league for three seasons between 2012 and 2015.Mahmood played for Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab) in the 2012 and 2013 seasons and later represented KKR in the 2015 season. However, Mahmood did not enter the league as a Pakistani player. After moving to the United Kingdom and obtaining a British passport, he registered for the IPL auction as an English player.A right-arm fast bowling all-rounder, Mahmood played 23 IPL matches across three seasons. He took 29 wickets while giving runs at an economy rate of 7.82. With the bat he scored 388 runs at a strike rate of 128.05.Mahmood is the last Pakistan-born cricketer to feature in the IPL, even though he did so as a British citizen. In 2010, there was a brief moment when Pakistan players returned to the IPL auction list. Many prominent players of the country were included in the auction pool. However, no franchise bid on any of them. The episode was later described as a “silent disgrace” and effectively confirmed that the IPL had moved on from signing Pakistani cricketers.Since then, the absence of Pakistani players from IPL continues. Mahmood’s appearance in the tournament marks the final example of a Pakistan-born cricketer taking the field in the league, marking the end of a short chapter that began in the first season of the IPL in 2008.
