BJP releases posters of Omar Abdullah 'missing'

Srinagar: The BJP on Friday launched a poster campaign targeting Omar Abdullah while he was reportedly on a private visit to London, describing the Jammu and Kashmir chief minister as “missing” and seeking “information about his whereabouts”.The posters were shared on the official social media handles of Jammu and Kashmir BJP and circulated on WhatsApp. The posters said that “the missing person holds the post of CM” and has not been seen for 10 days. Omar’s National Conference (NC) rejected the campaign as not worthy of a reaction. The posters claimed that Omar was last seen on May 11 while laying the foundation stone for the renovation of the Mughal-era Malshahi Mosque in Ganderbal near Srinagar.BJP state spokesperson Sajid Yusuf Shah said that NC has not issued any statement on the CM. Pointing to Omar’s regular participation in the marathon over the years, Shah said, “There are reports that he is in London. The Chief Minister has every right to travel wherever he wants, but the people of Jammu and Kashmir have not elected him for the things and activities he is engaged in. He is a frontrunner in the marathon. Just like that, he is running away from his responsibilities.”Altaf Thakur, another BJP spokesperson, warned that the poster campaign would not be limited to social media and would be taken to the streets. Thakur said, “The Chief Minister is answerable to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. It is surprising that there is no report about him for 10 days.”Omar’s father and NC president Farooq Abdullah mocked the posters, saying the BJP had nothing better to do than launch such campaigns in Jammu and Kashmir. “We are not here to answer them,” the former CM said.
