New Delhi: Noting that the Madhya Pradesh High Court’s order declaring the disputed Bhojshala complex in Dhar district as a temple only validates the apprehensions and concerns that he has continuously raised since 2019. Ayodhya verdictJamiat Ulama-e-Hind (JUH) released a report on Friday arguing that the Supreme Court’s interpretation of the Places of Worship Act shows “how deeply majoritarian politics has penetrated legal recognition”.JUH said that it was just a coincidence that the report was being released on the same day when the order for Bhojshala came. Speaking at the event attended by senior lawyers, legal experts, former judges, researchers and intellectuals, JUH president Maulana Mahmood Asad Madani said the controversies did not end with the Babri Masjid issue; Rather, new controversies related to Gyanvapi, Mathura Idgah, Kamal Maula Masjid and other religious places are now arising, reopening old wounds. The report titled “A Critical Analysis of the Babri Masjid Judgment and the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act 1991 Case” provides a detailed analysis of key Supreme Court judgments, including the Ismail Faruqui case and the Ayodhya judgment, claiming that certain judicial interpretations have weakened constitutional principles relating to the protection of religious places. In particular, the report discusses the far-reaching implications of comments made in the Ismail Faruqui case, in which a mosque was not considered an essential part of Islamic practice in every circumstance. “As the judiciary increasingly accommodates Hindutva majoritarianism, Muslim holy sites have become legally unsafe, culturally contested, and politically targeted,” the report said. The report said the Places of Worship Act 1991 was designed to stabilize the religious character of places of worship as they existed on August 15, 1947. “Yet recent court decisions have interpreted the Act so narrowly that new claims against mosques in Varanasi, Mathura and elsewhere are now being advanced.”“The arguments made in those cases relating to essential practices, beliefs, archaeological evidence and civilizational memory are now being replicated in ongoing litigation involving the Gyanvapi Mosque in Sambhal, the Shahi Idgah in Mathura and others,” the report said. The report recommends that the judiciary should uphold the Places of Worship Act as intended and it should be strictly enforced and the protection of religious places should be treated as a constitutional obligation. It further recommended that “communal politics and historical claims should not be allowed to become instruments of legal disputes.

PM Modi’s reaction comes after a media report quoting government sources claimed that discussions are being held at the “highest level” regarding a possible temporary cess or surcharge on foreign travel.According to reports, the proposed levy is being considered to mitigate the fiscal impact arising from the current war situation and rising cost of crude oil and imports. The report further claims that any cess, tax or surcharge on foreign travel will flow directly to the Center instead of into a divisible tax pool and may remain in place for a year as a temporary measure. The report also said that the Finance Ministry did not respond to questions regarding the proposal. However, PM Modi refuted the claims and said that the government is focusing on easing business and travel-related processes for citizens rather than imposing new restrictions.Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing a public gathering in Hyderabad on May 10 last week, had appealed to citizens to avoid buying gold and postpone non-essential foreign travel for a year to conserve foreign exchange reserves amid the global energy crisis caused by the ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran.

IMA appeals to Center after paper leak

एनईईटी-यूजी परीक्षा के संचालन को विकेंद्रीकृत करें, एनटीए के खिलाफ कार्रवाई करें: आईएमए ने पेपर लीक के बाद केंद्र से आग्रह किया

NEET UG exam (Images/PTI)

New Delhi: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Friday wrote to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan condemning the alleged paper leak in NEET-UG 2026 and demanding immediate action against it. National Testing Agency (NTA) and people involved in malpractices. The organization urged the government to decentralize the conduct of the NEET-UG examination by handing over more responsibility to the states and union territories, and also to restore transparency and public confidence in the examination system. In its letter, the IMA expressed ‘deep concern and deep disappointment’ over the developments surrounding the medical entrance examination, saying that repeated controversies and alleged irregularities have caused ‘extreme mental trauma, stress, hardship and uncertainty’ to lakhs of candidates and their families.Highlighting the scale of the exam, IMA said that more than 22.5 lakh students appeared for NEET-UG 2026 in over 551 cities and 5,500 centers across the country. It warned that conducting examinations on such a large scale in a single phase using physical question papers has become ‘an extremely challenging task’, raising the possibility of future leaks unless structural reforms are made. The doctors’ body demanded that NEET-UG be conducted in completely online mode in all states and union territories to reduce the possibility of question paper leaks and exam-related malpractices. It also called for a ‘credible and timely’ CBI investigation into the alleged leak, arrest of all culprits involved, setting up of special fast-track courts for daily trials and strict punishment under laws dealing with examination irregularities.Among other recommendations, the IMA called for a comprehensive and impartial investigation to identify all individuals and institutions associated with the alleged leaks along with enhanced technological security measures to prevent recurrence of such incidents. The association urged the authorities to provide timely clarity on the re-examination schedule to reduce anxiety among students and set up counseling and support system for affected candidates and parents.“The medical profession is built on ethics, trust and credibility. They deserve the assurance that their future will be determined entirely by merit, hard work and honesty.”The letter comes days after NTA announced that the re-exam of NEET-UG 2026 will be held on June 21 after canceling the May 3 exam over allegations of massive irregularities and question paper leaks.

Russia backs India over Pakistan for ‘long-term diplomatic role’ in US-Iran conflict

पश्चिम एशिया संकट: अमेरिका-ईरान संघर्ष में 'दीर्घकालिक राजनयिक भूमिका' के लिए रूस ने पाकिस्तान के बजाय भारत का समर्थन कियाAddressing a media briefing after the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting in New Delhi, Lavrov highlighted India’s diplomatic experience and growing global standing amid growing concerns over instability in West Asia and disruption in global energy supplies. He said, “Pakistan is helping to establish dialogue between the US and Iran to resolve urgent problems. If they look for a long-term mediator between Iran and its Arab friends, this is a role India can play given its vast diplomatic experience.” Lavrov’s comments come at a time when India is actively engaging with the Gulf countries amid prolonged regional conflict, rising crude oil prices and fears of disruption around the Strait of Hormuz, a global energy shipping route vital for Indian imports. The Russian Foreign Minister also highlighted India’s direct stake in ensuring stability in the region, especially as the current BRICS Chair and one of the world’s largest energy consumers.Referring to India’s possible diplomatic role, Lavrov said, “India, the BRICS chair, is directly interested in getting oil from the region. Why would they not offer their services, including as the country currently chairing the BRICS, so that they can initially invite Iran, the UAE, so that they can negotiate with each other on how they can avoid any hostilities between the two countries?” During the briefing, Lavrov stressed that BRICS as an organization should not formally act as a mediator, but said individual member states could play a constructive diplomatic role in reducing tensions.“The most important thing is to end this. I don’t think BRICS should be a mediating organization, but individual BRICS members, especially those who are interested in ensuring that there are no problems with navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, can help,” he said through a translator.Without naming any countries, Lavrov also accused some countries of attempting to deepen hostility between Iran and Arab countries, while claiming that Russia was making efforts aimed at reducing tensions and encouraging dialogue. He said, “And they are trying; other countries are trying to create this aggression, trying to create this hostility in these relations. I believe that this hostility, this aggression against Iran, was motivated, among other things, to antagonize Iran and its Arab neighbors.”“We need to understand the root causes of every conflict, here it is the unprovoked aggression of the US and Israel,” Lavrov said. The remarks came when Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the UAE during a five-nation tour focused on strengthening India’s strategic, energy and economic ties with the Gulf and European countries.Lavrov also confirmed that PM Modi will visit Russia later this year for the upcoming BRICS summit, adding that preparations for the high-level meeting are already underway.Lavrov said, “We are preparing for the BRICS summit. Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday again confirmed that this year it is his turn to visit the Russian Federation. We will prepare for this top-level summit.”Highlighting the comprehensive India-Russia partnership, the Russian Foreign Minister said that cooperation between the two countries continues to expand in a number of areas, including energy, trade and financial transactions.“Our agreement with India is moving away from the dollar to using national currencies and currencies of other countries that do not abuse their positions in global financial institutions,” he said.Lavrov’s remarks also focused on India’s long-term history of diplomatic mediation and peacekeeping efforts, including its role in the Korean armistice, Suez crisis, Iran-Iraq war and various UN-led initiatives. India has increasingly projected itself as a neutral global player advocating dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution as part of its broader ‘Vishwa Bandhu’ foreign policy approach.
