CBSE debacle: Teenage ‘cyber security researcher’ highlights vulnerabilities of NTA portal india news
New Delhi: The NTA on Tuesday sought to patch the vulnerabilities in its NEETUG portal that were exposed by a teenage “cyber security researcher”, who warned that the glitch could potentially be exploited to hack sensitive information.NTA sources told TOI that there was a weakness that had affected the website for some time, but it has been fixed, on a day when the CBSE website was hit by a spate of cyber attacks.Relan Anil, identifying himself as a 16-year-old “cyber security researcher”, posted a warning on X. Interestingly, the NTA administration follows them. The agency, which has been under fire over the paper leak, moved quickly to plug the breach that could have helped outsiders access details of exam invigilators, center coordinators and exam centers – names, mobile numbers and email addresses. Agency sources acknowledged the repair work, but did not support Anil’s statement about the damage caused.Anil alleged that the vulnerabilities enabled functions like exporting internal records, generating appointment letters, modifying supervisor data, uploading templates and managing administrative mapping associated with the examination process, which could have created concerns among students, parents and cyber security supervisors. As the screenshots and allegations circulated online, several users reported that the re-examination portal link had temporarily stopped working and was displaying a “404 Not Found” message. The development has further fueled online speculation about possible backend interference or emergency technical changes. In the evening, NTA officials said that necessary corrective measures had been implemented and the portal was functioning normally.
