New Delhi: The government has taken steps to clear the backlog of containers at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) (Mumbai), India’s busiest container port, and constituted a panel of top officials to clear the bottlenecks at all 12 major ports. It will meet every week or fortnight to address concerns faced by businesses. The issue of around 35,000-40,000 inbound containers piled up at JNPA was raised in a review meeting chaired by Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. Representatives of All India Liquid Bulk Importers and Exporters Association participated in the meeting.TOI has learned that the pile-up was due to insufficient number of lorry drivers available to hand over this cargo. In an official statement, the shipping ministry said containers bound for West Asia have been turned back at JNPA, putting additional pressure on the port and logistics infrastructure.
