CSK Qualification Scenario: Can Chennai reach the playoffs after the crushing defeat against LSG?

Chennai Super Kings’ late bid for a playoff spot in the Indian Premier League 2026 suffered a major setback after they lost to Lucknow Super Giants on Friday, May 15. Playing at the Ekana Stadium, already eliminated LSG handed CSK a heavy seven-wicket defeat.

Mitchell Marsh played a sensational inning of 90 runs in just 38 balls.Due to which the host team achieved the target of 188 runs in just 16.4 overs. After this defeat, CSK is at sixth place in the table with 12 points from 12 matches.

CSK now have only two matches left in the group stage, against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans, with both teams firmly in the race for the playoffs.

Now the big question is whether CSK will be able to qualify for the playoffs even after losing to LSG.

Simply put, CSK has made the equation quite simple for itself. They need to win both their remaining matches to give themselves the best chance of reaching the top four.

But will they be able to qualify even if they lose one of the last two games? Here’s how the situation stands.

CSK’s remaining matches

CSK will face Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans in their last two league matches. Both the rivals are still in the race for the playoffs and are in good positions in the race. GT can still finish with 20 points from 14 games, while SRH can reach a maximum of 18.

If CSK wins both the matches, it will have 16 points, which should help it stay alive in the race for qualification. However, their destiny is no longer entirely in their own hands and they will need favorable results elsewhere.

Their nearest competition at the moment is Rajasthan Royals, who also have 12 points from 11 matches.

rr remaining matches

Rajasthan Royals still have three matches left against Delhi Capitals, Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians.

If RR wins all three matches, CSK’s playoff hopes will effectively be over.

Chennai will hope that Rajasthan loses at least one of these matches. If RR ends on even 16 runs, the race could come down to net run rate.

Currently, CSK’s NRR is +0.027, which is the weakest among the teams fighting for the remaining playoff spots.

pbks remaining matches

CSK also needs Punjab Kings in the final stages of the tournament.

Punjab has to face Royal Challengers Bangalore and Lucknow Super Giants in their last two matches. RCB and GT, who currently top the table with 16 points, are almost assured of qualification.

If Punjab loses even one of their remaining matches, their maximum possible number will go down, opening the way for CSK to make a playoff run a bit.

Can CSK qualify with 14 points?

This is where things become extremely complicated.

RCB, GT and SRH already have 14 points each and are in a strong position due to their better net run rates. Unless those teams fail miserably in the final stages, they are expected to capture three of the four playoff spots.

For CSK to qualify with just 14 points, they will have to make Punjab Kings lose both their remaining matches, while Rajasthan Royals will also have to lose at least two of their last three fixtures.

Nevertheless, CSK will need a big win in their remaining matches to significantly improve their net run rate and stay ahead in the qualification battle.
