'Despicable, shameless and mischievous': CJI Surya Kant condemns casteist comments made in his name on social media

New Delhi: In a rare incident of direct push-pull, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant refuted the statement which was shared on social media quoting him.The CJI’s statement came after a social media account wrongly attributed the following comment, originally in Hindi, to him: “If a society, after producing IAS, IPS, CJI, President and PM from its ranks, prefers to remain exploited, then the fault does not lie in the Brahmins but in its own mentality.Calling the situation “despicable, brazen and mischievous”, the CJI said in a statement to PTI, “Creating a fictitious quote, and associating it with the highest judicial office of the country, is an act of rank dishonesty, deliberate social incitement and contempt for constitutional values.”He further said in his statement, “Such reckless conduct attacks the foundation of public confidence in the judiciary and the rule of law.”Calling the claims fabricated, the statement said, “These allegations are completely baseless, malicious and patently false.”It urged caution against the spread of misinformation, saying: “The Office of the Honorable Chief Justice of India calls on all responsible citizens, media organizations and social media platforms to desist from promoting false and fabricated content.”
