Election Commission counters over 68 lakh cyber attacks on polling day, ensures safe counting

New Delhi: On the day of counting of votes for the recently concluded assembly elections, there were over 68 lakh malicious hits from both India and abroad on the Election Commission’s online platforms including the results portal. However, Election Commission officials on Wednesday said all such attacks were successfully countered with strong cyber security protocols. The EC further informed that the ECINET platform – which comprises over 40 different EC applications and portals dealing with different election-related tasks – recorded an average of 3 crore hits per minute on the counting day (May 4) and a total of 98.3 crore hits on the voting days (April 9, April 23 and 29).Since the official launch of ECINET in January 2026, the integrated app has seen a significant growth in usage and has recorded 10 crore downloads so far. The beta version of ECINET was used in the Bihar elections in November 2025.Commission officials on Wednesday said ECINET has played a central role in streamlining election processes, including real-time monitoring, enabling faster reporting and enhancing transparency during the recent elections and by-elections in five states/UTs.On the day of counting, over 3.2 lakh QR codes were generated to ensure that only authorized personnel could access the counting sites, thereby preventing any unauthorized entry into the counting centres. In a significant step towards enhancing security at counting centres, the new QR code-based photo identity card system was used for the first time on the day of counting in all five States/UTs through ECINET. This system will now be a standard for all future elections to the Lok Sabha and State/Union Territory Legislative Assemblies.
