Farmers say Puthur lake near Krishnagiri is shrinking due to encroachment and heaps of garbage

Krishnagiri: Farmers have urged the authorities to take strict action against people dumping garbage and construction material in Puthur lake in Kattikhanapalli panchayat near Krishnagiri. According to him, the lake is shrinking because garbage and debris are being dumped into it. He said that more than 100 houses have been built by encroachment around the lake.The lake, which was spread over 105 acres for a few years, is now reduced to only 70 acres. “The lake irrigates about 1,400 acres of agricultural land and earns several lakhs of rupees to the government through fish catch auction,” said Govindasamy K, a farmer.Farmers alleged that sanitation workers and residents were dumping garbage in the lake. Meat sellers were throwing bags of chicken waste into the water. He said that water is being polluted due to dumping of garbage and debris.
