What started as a message in a student chat ended in an arrest when what police said was a ‘joke’ turned into a serious threat.A 23-year-old Florida International University (FIU) student was taken into custody after sending messages in a WhatsApp group that authorities say could have threatened violence at a campus event.Gabriela Saldana was arrested last week and later appeared in bond court, where her bail was set at $5,000. He faces a serious allegation of giving written threat to kill or cause bodily harm.According to police, the messages were posted in a group chat of about 215 students who were discussing an upcoming event at the university’s Ocean Bank Convocation Center.

In one message, Saldana wrote: “[Israel’s Benjamin] Netanyahu, if you can hear me, drop off some gifts for our Capstone students at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center.Authorities said he followed it up with a more direct statement: “There was going to be a bomb at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center and it was Jonathan’s fault.”The messages were not taken as humorous by the students in the group. Shortly afterward, Saldana responded in chat: “I wrote a stupid joke that shouldn’t have been made.”Police said he later admitted sending the messages.During the court hearing, Judge Mindy S. Glazer acknowledged Saldana’s claim that it was a joke, but said the legal standard depends on how the message is interpreted. The judge said, “I can understand your position when you are saying it is a joke, but to an objective person it is not a joke and that would be enough for probable cause.” He added: “I’m not saying it’s enough beyond a reasonable doubt. I don’t know whether the state will be able to prove it at trial, but for the purposes of this hearing, I believe there’s enough for probable cause.”The university released a statement confirming the arrest: “An FIU student has been arrested for making a credible and imminent threat of violence at a planned university event.” It said the suspect had identified a specific date, time and location and confirmed there was no threat to campus security.
