Despite the setbacks in red-ball cricket, the Board of Control for Cricket in India is reportedly giving long-term support to Gambhir, with discussions about extending his contract beyond the 2027 ODI World Cup and potentially till the 2028 T20 World Cup and the Los Angeles Olympics.Speaking in an interview with Vicky Lalwani, Wason gave a scathing assessment of Gambhir’s personality and management style, and claimed that his aggressive approach dates back to his early cricketing days in Delhi.Wasson said, “I have known him personally since he was a kid. I have had many issues with him. With him, it’s about my way or the highway. That’s just the way he is, and he bullies a lot in Delhi cricket too.”“His temperament has been like that from the beginning. He comes from money, is an excellent player and he is intelligent.” His ego is on a different level. He thinks that if he says it is night when it is morning then it will be accepted that it is night. Get in line. If you don’t suit me, you are on my hit list. He will try to harm you, but he has achieved a lot in cricket and his temperament has helped him in cricket.”Wasson further suggested that his confrontational personality was a key factor behind Gambhir’s success as a player, but questioned whether the same attitude still worked in a coaching role.“The player he became was because of his temperament. Unless he fights, he doesn’t give his best. He probably fights near the window of his house. But he didn’t understand when to get off this horse, now that he’s retired, so he’s competing Virat Kohli:Hyper-aggressiveness and an alpha-male type of personality from Delhi,” Vasan claimed.The former Indian cricketer also alleged that everyone inside the Indian dressing room is not comfortable with Gambhir’s strict attitude.“I’m sure not all players can be very happy. Someone or the other might be sleeping on the needle. It happens, personal likes and dislikes, and that too with such a strong personality. With personal likes and dislikes, and leading them with the stick, if you keep winning, it’s fine. But if you lose, you need to listen to criticism,” he said.Although Vasan indicated that some Indian players were unhappy with the current environment, he refused to reveal any names publicly.“I know one or two of them; they won’t say it openly. I can’t say their names on this show. Everyone knows what’s going on. But after bypassing those players, if you win, it’s your world. It’s a team sport; no one will listen to the players. If the coach still wins after all that, then the coach is right, and the players are wrong,” Wasson concluded.
