‘Need for greater engagement’: Iceland PM with PM Modi on stage at Nordic summit draws attention to ‘purely Icelandic words’
New Delhi: Prime Minister of Iceland Kristrun Frostdottir drew attention to the term “relationship” between India and Iceland given its linguistic and emotional resonance. The comments came in response to the use of the word by Prime Minister Narendra Modi while speaking during the India-Nordic summit on Tuesday, where he highlighted that in many Nordic languages, the word has the same meaning as it has in Hindi.“We have seen through free trade agreements that Prime Minister Modi has addressed the increase in investment coming from Iceland to India. So there are a lot of things that we can do together, and I just want to address, I like that word ‘relationship’. It is a purely Icelandic word, and people will be very devoted to this language, Prime Minister Modi, because that is what people need. They need more ‘relationship’ today,” Iceland PM Kristrun Frostsdottir said.PM Modi had used the term to bring to mind the “closeness of our views”. He said, “Today, I used the word ‘Sambandh’ several times. In many Nordic languages, the word ‘Sambandh’ means connection, relationship, a bond. In Hindi too, ‘Sambandh’ has the same meaning. It is not just a similarity of words, it reflects the closeness of our views. Let us deepen the ties between us in every sphere and make the India-Nordic partnership a model of shared prosperity, innovation and a sustainable future.”The summit convened the leaders of India and the Nordic countries, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden to formulate a common vision for future cooperation with a strong focus on sustainability, environmental responsibility and advanced technological cooperation.
