Sajid Wajid Shaikh wins Henry Cleves Prize: A milestone for Indian art.
Indian artist Sajid Wajid Shaikh has been awarded the prestigious Henry Cleves Prize 2026-2027, marking an important milestone in his artistic journey. This prize, awarded by invitation every two years by the La Napoule Art Foundation, provides support to a sculptor through a research and creation grant as well as a one-year residency at the Château de la Napoule. The residency will culminate in a summer exhibition showcasing the work developed during their stay. Established in honor of the sculptor Henri Cleves and his wife Marie Cleves, the award reflects their vision of the palace as a space for artistic freedom, experimentation and international dialogue. Sculpture remains central to this heritage, with the historic site continuing to inspire contemporary artistic practices. Sheikh first encountered the palace during his 2025 residence under Villa Swagatam, an initiative of the French Institute in India and the French Embassy in India. Their selection for the award highlights the lasting impact of such cultural exchange programmes. Commending his achievement, His Excellency Mr. Thierry Mathou, Ambassador of France to India, said: “Through programs like Villa Swagatam, France and India are not only fostering artistic dialogue, but also laying the foundation for transformative experiences that shape the trajectories of emerging artists. I congratulate Mr. Sajid Wajid Shaikh for winning the Henri Cleves Prize, which shows how these pathways, once started, can develop freely and meaningfully.” and contribute to deepening cultural cooperation between South Asia and France.” Based between Navi Mumbai and Aurangabad, Sheikh’s interdisciplinary practice spans sculpture, installation and film, often exploring themes of resistance and systemic tension.
