China establishes new county near PoK, Afghan border to curb Uyghur infiltration

China has established a new county in its Xinjiang region near Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and the Afghanistan border, a move that comes amid ongoing tensions with India over disputed areas, particularly in Ladakh. The county, named Senling, was announced by the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region government on March 26 and will be administered by Kashgar Prefecture, according to a report by the South China Morning Post. Located near the Karakoram mountain range and close to PoK and Afghanistan, the new administrative unit holds strategic importance. It is the third county created by China in Xinjiang in more than a year. India had earlier lodged a protest with Beijing over the establishment of Henan and Hekang counties, saying parts of their jurisdiction fall within its Union Territory of Ladakh.

Hain County covers much of the disputed Aksai Chin Plateau, which India considers part of Ladakh, but which has been under Chinese control since the 1962 war and remains a major point of contention between the two countries.Kashgar, which Senling will administer, is a historic city on the ancient Silk Road and serves as a strategic gateway linking China with South and Central Asia. It is also the starting point of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, a project passing through PoK that India has consistently opposed.Although specific details regarding Senling’s administrative divisions and boundaries have not been disclosed, its proximity to disputed areas and India’s prior objections to similar development highlight the sensitivity surrounding China’s administrative changes in the border areas.Lin Minwang, a professor at Shanghai-based Fudan University’s Institute of International Studies, said the move “reflects China’s deep recognition of the strategic importance of the region”.“At a broader level, this decision signals China’s reassertion of its border,” PTI quoted the professor as saying. He said the new county is geographically linked to Afghanistan’s narrow Wakhan Corridor, a 74-km strip bordering Xinjiang that separates Tajikistan and PoK, highlighting China’s security concerns in the region.Beijing has previously expressed concern about Uyghur militants from the East Turkestan Islamic Movement using the Wakhan Corridor to enter Xinjiang from Afghanistan. Yun Sun, a senior fellow at the Stimson Center in Washington, said the new counties represent an effort toward stronger local governance.“It helps strengthen stabilization efforts by the government in the frontier region, which has traditionally been subject to ethnic unrest and potential infiltration of foreign terrorists from Central Asia,” he said.

From welfare to dependency? How Tamil Nadu got trapped in the trap of freebies. india news

From welfare to dependency? How did Tamil Nadu fall into the trap of freebies?

New Delhi: Election campaigns across India are increasingly being defined by what parties promise to deliver and while the “freebie culture” is taking hold in other states, it started here Tamil Nadu. Across the state, parties are once again making promises of cash transfers, subsidized services and household goods, each trying to outdo the other. This is the season of manifesto releases and high-decibel campaigning, where the language of welfare dominates every rally and road show. For many voters influenced by decades of Dravidian politics, such promises are not extravagant gifts but part of the normal grammar of governance.

Watch

How Stalin, EPS, Vijay are outdoing each other on free stuff and one party is opposing it. I witness

What sets Tamil Nadu apart is not just the scale of its welfare but also the depth of its political memory. From early interventions in food and education to more visible, consumption-oriented schemes, successive governments have created an expectation that the state should play an active role in everyday life. What is changing is not just the scale of welfare but also its form, earlier schemes focused on items like television, mixers and grinders are now giving way to direct cash transfers and other similar schemes.

Tamil Nadu - Assembly Elections

Therefore, this contest is less about excess and more about continuity, which shows how deeply embedded this model is in the political imagination of Tamil Nadu.Similarly, what is unfolding in 2026 is not just a contest of promises, but a contest within boundaries that no major party is willing or able to recreate.

How welfare became the norm

The story begins not with extremes, but with intention. Under MG Ramachandran, welfare was incorporated into governance as a tool of legitimacy. His most enduring intervention, the expansion of the Nutritious Meal Scheme, ensured mass cooked midday meals for school children, leading to significant increases in enrollment and retention. At the same time, access to subsidized rice was expanded through the public distribution system, and schemes such as free school uniforms and textbooks strengthened access to basic education. These were designed not as discretionary benefits but as fundamental state responsibilities, especially for poor families.

era of free

It was under J Jayalalithaa that Kalyana gained a sharper political edge and a more visible form. Their governments launched a series of consumer-oriented schemes that made state support immediate and tangible: free color televisions for homes, mixers, grinders and electric fans for women beneficiaries, and laptops for students aimed at bridging the digital divide. Additionally, the Amma brand of subsidized services, including the famous Amma canteens offering food at low prices, as well as Amma salt, water and pharmacies, drives well-being in everyday consumption. These initiatives did more than provide material aid; They reshaped voters’ experience of the state, turning welfare into something to be seen, used and remembered.Thereafter the competition was not on whether welfare should be provided or not, but on how much and how effectively it should be provided. alternative between DMK And AIADMK did not disrupt this model; This strengthened it. Each government inherited and added to the expectations set by its predecessor. By the time MK Stalin took over, the model had evolved again. There was a push towards more targeted schemes and direct transfers, particularly for women and students, improving rather than reversing what had come before.Neither DMK nor Edappadi K in the opposition. The AIADMK, led by Palaniswami, can credibly campaign on reducing welfare. Criticism, when it comes, focuses on incompetence or corruption rather than principle.

Will the model survive?

Tamil Nadu’s welfare model remains fiscally sustainable, based on a strong economy, most parties would say. The state has one of India’s strongest industrial bases, is a leader in electronics manufacturing and has seen steady growth in recent years, outpacing the national average. By standard measures, it is not in fiscal crisis. Debt has declined from its peak to about 26% of GSDP, and the fiscal deficit is projected to return closer to the 3% target. Strong self-tax revenues and relatively low borrowing costs reinforce this picture. Social outcomes also support the case: welfare programs have improved education, especially among women, and strengthened workforce participation.

era of free

Still, caution remains. Tamil Nadu’s debt remains high in absolute terms, and welfare expenditure continues to expand. Interest payments are taking up an increasing share of revenues, while losses remain high. Critics have warned that a continued increase in pledges risks making the fiscal situation tighter. Even within government estimates, large-scale cash schemes can impose significant recurring costs. Well-being itself may not be sustainable, but the accumulation of commitments is eroding flexibility. The debate is less about the immediate crisis and more about how long the balance can last.

a contest with no exit

No major party in Tamil Nadu now campaigns against Kalyan. Instead, the competition is one of scale and distribution. The 2026 manifesto reflects this logic. The DMK has proposed a household coupon of Rs 8,000 and extended financial assistance to women along with continuation of subsidies and services. The AIADMK has responded with its sweeping promises, including direct cash transfers, free appliances including refrigerators and fuel assistance. Many of these are echoes of previous plans, showing how deeply embedded this model has become.

freebie matrix

Political exchanges have turned into a familiar cycle. Edappadi K. Palaniswami has criticized MK Stalin’s proposals as ineffective while promising more direct cash support. The DMK, in turn, defends its approach as targeted welfare with developmental outcomes. Behind the rhetoric, both sides operate within the same limits: Withholding benefits carries political risk. Competition is no longer about whether welfare is provided or not, but about how clearly and efficiently it can be provided.

voter logic

Efforts to challenge this structure have gained limited momentum. Seaman has openly rejected the language of freebies, arguing for dignity and self-reliance over state subsidies. Yet their status remains outside the mainstream. even VictoryThose who initially based their politics around welfare rather than gifts have offered benefits that mirror established parties. This reflects a deeper reality. Tamil Nadu’s electorate is not passive, but shaped by decades of policy that have made welfare both tangible and credible. Programs ranging from education to nutrition are often targeted and linked to real outcomes. For many voters, these distinctions are less ideological than practical. Well-being is evaluated in terms of credibility and accessibility rather than intent. Whether aid comes in the form of subsidies, services or direct transfers often matters less than whether it arrives on time and reaches the intended household. This creates a feedback loop in which parties are judged not for delivering benefits, but for delivering them efficiently. In that sense, electoral competition strengthens the system, even as it appears to counter it.

What is the way forward?

The emergence of new actors before 2026 increases the likelihood of such change. Seeman and Vijay have pointed towards a politics of respect and self-reliance in different ways. His rhetoric indicates discomfort with the ever-expanding welfare state, suggesting that dependency may have its costs. As a result, potential disruptors also face a dilemma. To oppose welfare altogether is to risk marginalization; To accept this is to become part of the same competitive cycle. So far, the latter trend has prevailed. So the challenge they offer is indirect, provoking the conversation rather than subverting it.The real test is not whether parties can move away from welfare, but whether they can sustain it without closing off their future options. For now, Tamil Nadu’s development has allowed this balance to be maintained, masking the trade-offs underlying it. But this balance rests on assumptions that cannot last forever.Tamil Nadu has not so much fallen into the trap of freebies as it has created a system that works until it doesn’t work. The uncertainty lies in what breaks first: the economics that sustain it, or the politics that demand it.

Anti-India US reporter says he was attacked at Minneapolis ICE protests: ‘Adult man pushed me, my glasses broke’

Anti-India US reporter says he was attacked at Minneapolis ICE protests: 'Adult man pushed me, my glasses broke'

Anti-India American journalist says he was attacked by protesters while covering a demonstration in Minneapolis. Conservative reporter Savannah Hernandez was attacked while filming an anti-ICE protest outside the Whipple ICE facility. According to eyewitnesses, a group of protesters surrounded him, pushed him and threw him to the ground. After the confrontation, Hernandez got back to her feet and continued reporting. She says that she will complain about this matter to the police. Hernandez acknowledged the incident on My glasses are broken. ANTIFA is still alive and well. “I’m talking to the police about pressing charges.”Things are already tense in the Minneapolis area following the recent shootings of Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretty by ICE agents, incidents that were caught on camera and condemned by local leaders and high-profile Democrats.Hernandez has previously been at the center of controversy over her reporting on immigration and cultural change in the United States. Earlier this month, he had posted about visiting a Hanuman temple in Frisco, Texas. She shared a photo from inside the temple and said she was “surprised” to see that an Indian temple in Texas had a board that read “Blessings for ‘Job Visa'”.In another post, she explained the purpose of her trip, saying: “Texans are saying that their state is starting to look unrecognizable, so I went to North Texas to see it. From streets named ‘Ali Akbar’ to residents saying Texas is now ‘mini-India’. His documentary is linked to Turning Point USA and focuses on the rapid growth of Indian and Muslim communities in Republican dominated areas like Frisco, Plano and Irving. It included interviews with residents concerned about cultural change, immigration and the increasing visibility of South Asian traditions, including festivals such as Holi and the rise of cricket grounds and religious infrastructure. His reporting also included criticism of the H1-B visa system, which allows highly skilled foreigners to work in the US. Their reporting matches the conservative ideology that Indians are replacing Americans in their country and taking their jobs and working for much lower wages, making employers prefer to hire them.Hernandez was accused of targeting a religious site, while MAGA supporters used his reporting to push anti-immigrant and anti-Indian stories.Frisco, in particular, has become a point of debate over immigration and identity, with heated city council discussions over the past few weeks. Online hate targeting Indians in the US is set to more than double between 2023 and 2025.

Ayush Shetty’s dream ends as Shi Yu Qi wins first Badminton Asia title

20-year-old Ayush Shetty’s heroic performance at the Badminton Asia Championships came to an end on Sunday, April 12. Playing the men’s singles final against world No. 2 Shi Yu Qi, Ayush faltered in straight games, losing 8-21, 10-21 in just 41 minutes to settle for a silver medal in his maiden BAC campaign.

Ayush chased the game for most of the contest due to Shi Yu Qi’s control of the rally and his ability to play the right shots at the right time. The 30-year-old Chinese shuttler won her first Badminton Asia Championships title with a spectacular performance in the final.

Badminton Asia Championships: Ayush Shetty vs Shi Yu Qi Final Highlights

With the Asian title in hand, Shi Yue Qi has now added to her World Championship title tally, underscoring her status as one of the most complete players on the circuit at the moment.

Shi Yu Qi (centre) posing with her gold medal at the BAC. (Badminton Asia Photo)

However, the result should not take away from the tournament Ayush has produced. The 20-year-old made one of the most impressive runs in recent Indian men’s singles history, defeating World No. 7 Li Shi Feng in the opening round, World No. 20 Chi Yu Jen in the second, World No. 4 Jonathan Christie in the quarter-finals. and World No. 1 Kunlavut Vitidsarn in the semi-finals. For a player in his maiden Badminton Asia Championships campaign, it was a great run.

In the final, Ayush had to come on the back foot right from the beginning. Shi’s accuracy around the net and her ability to read drifts ensured that she controlled the front court exchanges, leading 11–6 at the mid-game interval in the first game. From there, he increased the tempo, mixed up his angles and ended rallies with sharp cross-court smashes to end the game 21–8.

Ayush never recovered from that start.

The second game briefly painted a different picture. Operating from the slower part of the court, Ayush tightened her defense and began to meet Shea’s aggressive shots with more consistency. The Chinese player made mistakes at that stage, which helped Ayush take a 7-2 lead and signal a possible comeback.

But the window was small. Xi quickly recalculated, downplaying unforced errors and expanding rallies to find fault with Ayush. His versatility, especially in controlling speed and direction, changed the pace. The 7-2 lead soon dropped to 8-11 at halftime.

From there, the gap only widened.

Ayush tried to force the case with his aggressive shots to break the rhythm, but Shea’s defensive tenacity remained intact. Rallies began to lean one way and the Indians’ mistakes came under pressure. The second game ended 21–10, completing a very one-sided final in terms of scoreline if not tries.

The nature of the loss does not change the week’s big gains. The Badminton Asia Championships is one of the most competitive events on the calendar, often featuring a deeper field than even some World Tour events. Despite being a world champion and former world No. 1, it took Xi more than a decade to win the title.

For Ayush, this was the first final at this level, and the difference was clearly visible.

At the same time, the tournament has placed him firmly in the conversation at the top of the men’s singles. with Early exit of players like Lakshya Sen And PV Sindhu, it was Ayush who took India’s challenge to a draw. His ability to defeat four consecutive top-20 players highlighted both his physical ability and his composure under pressure.

It is also expected that this run will propel him into the top 20 of the world rankings, an important milestone at this stage of his career. With the BWF World Championships being held in India later this year, the country could have a number of men’s singles players in that bracket, which will strengthen its medal chances.

At present, Ayush left with the silver. But more importantly, he leaves with proof that he belongs at this level.

‘In constant contact’: Vance says Trump called ‘a dozen times’ during peace talks with Iran

'In constant contact': Vance says Trump called 'a dozen times' during peace talks with Iran

Vice President of the United States J.D. Vance said on Saturday that the President donald trump While he and his team were busy in peace talks with Iran in Islamabad, Pakistan, he was called “a dozen times”.Speaking to reporters, Vance said, “We were constantly talking to the President. I don’t know how many times we spoke to him – half a dozen times, a dozen times in the last 21 hours.Vance said, “We were in constant contact with the team as we negotiated in good faith. And we’re leaving with a very simple offer here, as a way to understand that this is our final and best offer.”Talks between America and Iran are currently at a standstill after no agreement was reached. According to Vance, the main controversy remained Iran’s nuclear program. The vice president called on Iran to shut down its program and stop uranium enrichment, calling it a “red line” for the Trump administration.“The simple fact is that we need to see a positive commitment that they will not seek nuclear weapons and that they will not seek equipment that would enable them to quickly acquire nuclear weapons,” Vance said.He said this is “the main goal of the President (Donald Trump)” and that is what he has tried to achieve through negotiations.Vance told reporters, “But the simple fact is that we need to see a positive commitment that they will not seek nuclear weapons, and they will not seek equipment that would enable them to quickly acquire nuclear weapons.”Meanwhile, Iran said the demands made by the US are “unreasonable” and blamed the US for the failure of the talks.“Before the talks, I stressed that we have the necessary goodwill and will, but because of the experiences of the last two wars, we have no confidence in the opposing side,” Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf wrote on Twitter. He said the Iranian delegation took constructive initiatives, “but in this round of talks the other side was unable to gain the confidence of the Iranian delegation.”He said, “America has understood our logic and principles and now the time has come for it to decide whether it can earn our trust or not.”Iran has long denied seeking nuclear weapons but has insisted on its right to a civilian nuclear program. Experts say its rich uranium reserves, though not weapons-grade, are only a small technological step away.Since the US and Israel launched the war on February 28, at least 3,000 people have been killed in Iran, 2,020 in Lebanon, 23 in Israel and more than a dozen in Gulf Arab states, and there has been permanent damage to infrastructure in half a dozen Middle Eastern countries. Iran’s hold on the Strait of Hormuz has largely cut off the Persian Gulf and its oil and gas exports from the global economy, driving up energy prices.Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said his country would try to facilitate a new dialogue between Iran and the US in the coming days.“It is important that the parties maintain their commitment to the ceasefire,” Dar said. The standoff – and Vance’s ‘take it or leave it’ proposal that Iran end its nuclear program – mirrors nuclear talks in Switzerland in February. Although President Donald Trump has said the subsequent war was aimed at forcing Iran’s leaders to abandon nuclear ambitions, each side’s positions appeared unchanged in talks after six weeks of fighting.
