'Healthy and asymptomatic': Indian Embassy says crew members evacuated from Hantavirus-hit MV Hondius are safe

The Indian Embassy in Spain on Sunday said two Indian crew members aboard the hantavirus-hit Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius are “healthy and asymptomatic” and have been flown to the Netherlands for quarantine under health safety protocols. In a statement, the embassy said the Dutch-flagged ship, carrying about 150 people, including two Indian nationals, had arrived in Spain after anchoring off the Canary Islands following the Hantavirus outbreak. The embassy said, “02 Indian nationals are healthy and have no symptoms. As informed by the Spanish National Center for Emergency Monitoring and Coordination (CENEM), 02 Indian nationals who were traveling as crew members have been evacuated to the Netherlands where they will be quarantined in accordance with the relevant health protection protocols.” The embassy said the Indian Ambassador was in close touch with the Spanish authorities and Indian citizens and was regularly monitoring the situation to ensure their safety and well-being. The statement said passengers on board the ship were disembarked in accordance with protocols set by the World Health Organization and Spanish authorities. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization issued a technical note regarding the disembarkation and management of passengers and crew linked to the outbreak. WHO advised Member States to “implement a risk-based approach to identify, monitor and manage contacts of probable or confirmed Andes virus (ANDV) cases from the MV Hondius cruise ship and those related to the incident on that cruise ship. ANDV is associated with limited human-to-human transmission, usually associated with close and prolonged contact.” According to WHO, as of May 8, eight cases of hantavirus had been reported, including three deaths. Six cases were laboratory confirmed as Andes virus infection. In India, health experts tried to downplay concerns over the outbreak linked to two Indian crew members. Dr Naveen Kumar, director of the ICMR-National Institute of Virology in Pune, said these cases do not indicate community spread in India. He said, “At present, the infections reported among Indian nationals aboard a cruise ship appear to be isolated imported cases and do not indicate community spread in India. Since hantavirus transmission is primarily rodent-borne and does not easily spread between humans, the immediate public health risk remains low.” Dr Kumar also said that human-to-human transmission of hantavirus is extremely rare.

'He reminds me of me': Lionel Messi calls his 'successor' the best player in the world

For almost two decades, Lionel Messi Seen by many fans as the greatest footballer of the modern era, the Argentinian has won a record eight Ballon d’Or awards and built a legacy that includes one World Cup title, four Champions League and 10 La Liga trophies during his legendary career. Now 38 and currently representing Argentina at international level playing for Inter Miami CF, Messi has admitted that the next generation is already preparing to take over the top of world football. Speaking during a recent Adidas event, as reported brandMessi was asked which young player reminds him the most and who he believes can become the best player in the world in the coming years. Argentina immediately pointed to Lamine Yamal.“There is a new generation of football players who are very good and have many years ahead of them, but if I had to pick one because of his age, what he has done so far, and what he can do in the future, it is Lamin [Yamal]. No doubt, for me he is the best.“He reminds me of when I was little.”

Why is Yamal already being compared to Messi?

The comparison has added significance as Yamal is following a similar path to Messi at FC Barcelona. Messi spent 17 years in Barcelona’s senior team, wearing the famous number 10 shirt and becoming the club’s greatest player, while dominating European football alongside stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo During one of the sport’s greatest rivalries.

Ronaldo won five Ballon d’Or awards during that era, second only to Messi’s eight. Messi was also just 22 years and 160 days old when he won his first Ballon d’Or in 2009, making him the third-youngest winner in history behind Michael Owen and Brazilian striker Ronaldo Nazario. Yamal is now becoming the face of Barcelona’s next generation, while he is already wearing the club’s iconic number 10 shirt and electrifying supporters at the Camp Nou in the same way Messi once did.

The Spain international has already helped Barcelona sail towards another La Liga title this season, while also winning the 2024 European Championship with the Spain national football team.

Yamal’s surprising growth in terms of numbers

Despite still being only 18 years old, Yamal’s rise has become one of the most rapid and statistically impressive successes seen in football in years. The winger has already made 154 appearances at club level and scored 49 goals, while also breaking a remarkable number of records at FC Barcelona.Yamal became the youngest player to reach 40 goals for Barcelona in all competitions, surpassing Paulino Alcantara’s record since 1915. Earlier this year, he also became the youngest player to score 10 or more goals in the Champions League. He is already Barcelona’s youngest debutant, youngest goalscorer and fastest player to reach 100 matches, and despite being only 18 years old he already holds 16 different club records. Messi’s output at the same stage of his career was still a little stronger in terms of goals-per-game ratio, but Yamal has managed to reach many of these milestones at a younger age than the Argentine during his rise through Barcelona’s first team. At international level, Yamal has already scored six goals in 25 matches for Spain and played a major role in their European Championship win in 2024.

His personal honors are also already increasing rapidly. Yamal has twice won the Copa Trophy, an award given to the world’s best under-21 player, and was also most recently runner-up to Ousmane Dembélé in the Ballon d’Or voting.

Messi believes Yamal can create his own legacy

There is still a huge gap between Yamal’s current achievements and the career that Messi ultimately built at Barcelona, Argentina and now Inter Miami.

Messi’s era included four Champions League titles, 10 La Liga trophies and ultimately World Cup glory with Argentina in 2022, achievements that cemented his place among the greatest players in football history. But Messi’s public support of Yamal is significant as very few young players have received that level of support from the Argentine icon. With Barcelona continuing to rebuild around the teenager and Spain already eyeing him as one of the faces of their future, Yamal’s rise looks less like a promising start and more like the beginning of football’s next superstar era.

However, Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s sensational spell of 4/23 had earlier dismantled the top order, removing Ryan Rickelton, Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav in quick succession and later dismissing Tilak Verma as well, ensuring MI were restricted to a fighting total despite resistance from their middle order. An atmosphere of chaos started. Deepak Chahar dismissed Virat Kohli for a golden duck in the very first over, while Devdutt Padikkal also departed cheaply as RCB slipped to 24/2. Corbin Bosch then joined the attack and dismissed captain Rajat Patidar to reduce Bengaluru to 47/3 at the end of the powerplay. At that time Mumbai was firmly on top. Jasprit Bumrah kept things tight, Bosch produced the odd bounce and the sluggish pitch made scoring difficult. Jacob Bethel tried to steady things with a patient 27, but the real difference came through Krunal Pandya.Krunal Pandya leads RCB’s comebackKrunal first bore the pressure, then slowly counterattacked. He used the angles cleverly, swept aggressively against Will Jacques and AM Ghazanfar and hit straight boundaries with growing confidence. His sky-scraping six over wide long-on off Ghazanfar turned out to be a crucial stand with Bethel coming back RCB’s way.Even as wickets were falling around him, Krunal kept fighting, appearing to be battling cramps but refusing to slow down. Bumrah’s last over was equally suffocating, leaving RCB needing 15 runs from the last six balls.last over drama The last over turned chaotic. A wide and a no-ball from Raj Bawa gave RCB hope, but he removed Romario Shepherd to push Mumbai back on top. Due to this Bhuvneshwar Kumar came to the crease.Bhuvneshwar, who was first a star with the ball, then gave the decisive moment with the bat. After surviving a wide bouncer, he hit a brilliant six over deep cover off Bava, then calmly took a single off the last ball with two runs needed.Rasikh Salam Dar hit it straight back and the batsmen completed the second run with a desperate dive, leading to wild celebrations in the RCB camp.Mumbai’s road ends, RCB winsFor Mumbai, it was a sad ending despite individual performances. For RCB, it was a victory built on resilience, Krunal Pandya’s composure and Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s all-round brilliance in one of the greatest thrillers of the season.

Bangladesh HC rejects bail plea of detained Hindu monk

Dhaka: Bangladesh High Court on Sunday rejected the bail plea of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das Since he is being tried in a trial court in connection with the murder of a lawyer during the clashes in Chittagong in 2024 after he was denied bail in a sedition case.A two-judge bench of Justices KM Zahid Sarwar and Sheikh Abu Taher has fixed Monday for hearing bail pleas in four other cases against the monk, Das’s lawyer Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya told reporters. “The HC rejected our bail plea because the recording of testimony of witnesses is going on in the trial (lower) court in Chittagong,” Bhattacharya said.Prosecutors had earlier said 39 people were charged with the murder of junior government prosecutor Saiful Islam Alif, while 23, including Das, were in personal custody pending trial and the remaining 16 were at large. Das’s lawyer sought bail saying the monk was in jail due to illness for a long time.On April 30 last year, the HC had granted him bail in the sedition case – allegedly insulting the national flag of Bangladesh – but the top appellate division of the Supreme Court later stayed the bail order.

After big victory, NDA sitting comfortably for 2027 presidential elections. india news

After big victory, NDA is sitting comfortably for 2027 presidential elections

New Delhi: BJPIts maiden victory in West Bengal with more than two-thirds of the seats and its growing numbers in the Rajya Sabha, a landslide victory in the assembly elections, will allow the party to set the terms in next year’s presidential election, after losing majority in the Lok Sabha elections had cast doubt on its dominant performance since 2014.Its overwhelming dominance in the assemblies along with allies in big states like Maharashtra, Bengal and Bihar – the three assemblies with the most weight among the states after UP in the electoral college for the presidency – will be effective in neutralizing the loss in the Lok Sabha, where its strength has fallen from 303 to 240 in 2024. All elected members of Parliament and Legislative Assemblies, excluding nominated MPs, form the electoral college. Parliament and Assemblies have equal voting shares, but while the value of each MP’s vote is the same (it was 700 in 2022), the importance of an MLA’s vote varies depending on the size (as per 1971 census) of the population that his Assembly represents. The vote of an MLA from UP at a value of 208 was almost 30 times the vote of an MLA from Sikkim, valued at 7 in 2022. This figure is likely to remain more or less the same next year as the census data is stable and the strength of the Assembly, barring vacancies, is also stable. The existence of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, which was dissolved in 2018 and was not part of the last presidential election, will be a factor, however minor. The decline in the Lok Sabha led to a decline of 44,100 in BJP’s votes in the electoral college, from a total of 10,86,431 in 2022. A poor performance in the assembly elections could have compromised its right to dictate terms, even with allies, as has been the case with previous governments when the dominant party, BJP or Congress, fell short of a majority. After the Lok Sabha elections, when the BJP was dependent on TDP and JD(U) to cross the 272-mark for majority, the opposition termed the two regional parties as its “crutches” for survival and predicted that the government would soon fall, claiming that the results would prove to be an inflection point in its strong run since 2014 and that the assembly elections would bring grim news.BJP has been in a good position for more than two years.

Uttar Pradesh holds key position in Presidential elections with votes of over 83,800 MLAs

It won massively in Haryana despite adverse conditions and the NDA’s strength in the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly increased from 150 to 237 during the last presidential elections and from 125 to 202 in the 243-member Bihar Assembly. It now has 207 MLAs compared to 77 in West Bengal. Ahead of the presidential election in July next year, UP is the most important with more than 83,800 votes in the electoral college.

Anger, confusion over move by Louisiana Republicans to erase majority-Black US House district

Baton Rouge, Louisiana: As a child, Leona Tate was one of the “New Orleans Four”, the first black students to desegregate a public school in the deep South, who endured racial slurs and death threats as armed U.S. Marshals escorted them to class. On Friday, more than six decades later, Tate told Republican state lawmakers that his proposal to gut at least one majority-Black congressional district brought back painful memories. “I want you to understand what it feels like to stand here, to walk through that mob as a child, and now to see elected officials doing the same thing that the mob was trying to do — just with better suits and a parliamentary process,” she said at a Senate committee hearing at the state Capitol in Baton Rouge. For more than eight hours, Black members of Congress, clergy, activists and voters gave testimony that was at times emotional, angry and deeply personal. Protestors outside the hearing room cheered him. “Let him speak!” They chanted at one point, after Republican committee Chairman Caleb Kleinpeter cut off a Democratic aide’s microphone amid a heated exchange.

Anger, confusion over move by Louisiana Republicans to erase majority-Black US House district

Mike McClanahan, president of the state chapter of the NAACP, the nation’s largest civil rights organization, was forcibly prevented from entering the room by security. The tumultuous hearing reflected the election chaos engulfing Louisiana following last week’s U.S. Supreme Court decision that gutted a landmark civil rights law, giving Republicans the chance to draw a new congressional map that erases one or both of the state’s two Democratic-held majority-black districts. Black voters make up one-third of the electorate in Louisiana and generally support Democrats. Republicans already control the other four districts. The unprecedented national redistricting arms race began last year, when President Trump inspired Texas Republicans to redraw the state’s congressional maps and take aim at five Democratic seats.
