'Can't close our eyes to realities': SC criticizes Mamata's 'interference' in I-PAC raids case
West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday came down heavily on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over her alleged interference during the Enforcement Directorate’s investigation at the I-PAC director’s residence in Kolkata. The top court described the socio-political environment in the poll-bound state as an “extraordinary situation”, while noting the CM’s entry into the premises amid the raids and the alleged removal of files related to I-PAC, which is said to be handling the TMC’s election campaign. The court described the situation as worrisome and said such actions by a sitting chief minister had put democracy at risk.“This is not a dispute between the state and the Union. We never thought that in this country, a day would come when a sitting chief minister would go to an office where there is an investigating agency. The Chief Minister of any state cannot jeopardize democracy by coming in the middle of an investigation and then say, ‘Don’t turn this into a dispute between the state and the Union.’ According to news agency ANI, the court said, this is indeed an act done by a person who is the Chief Minister by putting the entire democracy at risk.A bench of Justices PK Mishra and NV Anjaria told the lawyers arguing on behalf of the West Bengal administration, including CM Mamata Banerjee and other senior officials, that they can argue on abstract legal principles, but the court cannot close its eyes to the practical realities going on in the state.“This is an extraordinary situation. Before the second bench (referring to the siege in the SIR case), we have seen that many judicial officers have been held hostage. We cannot close our eyes to the realities. You can debate abstract legal principles, but we cannot lose sight of the practical situation prevailing in the state,” the court remarked. The ED raid became a political flashpoint when Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stepped into the ongoing investigation and allegedly interfered in the proceedings by removing crucial evidence. The ED had conducted searches at several places including Kolkata and Delhi as part of its investigation into alleged financial irregularities linked to I-PAC.The agency has said the action is part of a routine investigation and is not politically motivated, adding that the search is evidence-based and is not targeted at any political establishment, no party office has been searched, and it is not linked to any elections.Mamata’s dramatic intervention came when she reached the residence of I-PAC co-founder Prateek Jain during the ED raid.According to the agency, she, along with associates and police personnel, “forcibly removed physical documents and electronic evidence” and later went to the I-PAC office in Salt Lake, where she was accused of similar actions. The visuals, known as Mamata’s “Green File”, sparked nationwide debate.

Probably learned nothing: Andy Murray reflects on coaching stint with Novak Djokovic

Andy Murray has given a candid assessment of his brief coaching stint with Novak Djokovic and admitted it was eye-opening and humbling despite limited success on the court.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the former world No. 1 initially joked that he “probably didn’t learn anything”, before he quickly clarified that his experience was actually deeply educational. Murray explained that moving into a coaching role gave him a new perspective on the daily routine and demands of an elite player, especially one operating at Djokovic’s level.

Murray said, “It was interesting to see what their day-to-day looked like compared to what I was doing, and how those things differ. It was really insightful.” He said coaching requires a change in mindset, particularly in how messages are communicated and how players are listened to, which he believes has been shaped by his own experiences off the court.

Learning curve despite semi-final limit

Murray’s tenure began around the Australian OpenBut the partnership ultimately fell short of the title. Djokovic reached the semi-finals at several major events, including the Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon, but was unable to convert those deep runs into trophies. He also crashed out of the US Open at the same stage.

Losses to top contenders such as Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev underlined the challenges Djokovic faced in regaining dominance, even as he won titles at smaller tournaments such as the Geneva Open and Athens Open.

Reflecting on the experience, Murray admitted that working with one of the game’s greatest players also revealed his own areas for improvement. “You’re very busy working with someone that great, so it highlights areas that you probably need to improve on if you want to be a great coach,” he said.

The partnership eventually ended After the Serbian’s poor performance at the French Open last year.

Djokovic’s condition is in danger due to injury concerns

Djokovic’s season has also been disrupted by fitness issuesThe 24-time Grand Slam champion has been struggling with a shoulder problem, which has caused him to miss major tournaments. He recently confirmed that he will not participate in the Madrid Open as his recovery continues.

The Serbian had earlier withdrawn from events in Miami and Monte Carlo, raising concerns over his preparation ahead of Roland Garros, which starts in late May. Despite the setbacks, Djokovic remains optimistic about returning to peak form in time for the clay-court majors, where he will chase a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title.

For his part, Murray is confident in Djokovic’s enduring ability. “Given the level he’s still capable of, does he have another big win? I think he does,” he said, backing his former rival to add another chapter to an already historic career.

Arvind Kejriwal court video controversy deepens after Delhi High Court judge recuses from hearing contempt petition

Arvind Kejriwal court video controversy deepens after Delhi High Court judge recuses from hearing contempt petition

New Delhi: Delhi High Court Judge Justice Tejas Karia on Wednesday recused himself from hearing a PIL seeking contempt action against AAP leaders and others. Arvind Kejriwal And Manish Sisodia for allegedly posting and sharing clips of the court hearing related to the former chief minister’s plea to recuse Justice Swarn Kanta Sharma in the liquor policy case, according to news agency PTI.The PIL, filed by lawyer Vaibhav Singh, was listed before a bench of Chief Justice DK Upadhyay and Justice Karia. The bench directed that the matter be placed before another bench on Thursday.“This matter will not be heard by this bench. List it tomorrow before a bench in which one of us, Justice Tejas Karia, is not a member,” the court said.According to news agency PTI, during the hearing, the petitioner’s counsel requested that the case be transferred to another bench which was already considering a similar issue.Apart from AAP leaders, the High Court administration and social media platforms like Meta Platform, X and Google have also been made parties in the PIL.Justice Karia, before being elevated to the bench, was a partner in a leading law firm and had represented Meta in several cases.Singh, in his plea, argued that unauthorized sharing of court proceedings on social media undermines judicial independence and violates high court rules. The PIL further alleged that several AAP leaders and members of other opposition parties, including Congress leader Digvijay Singh, “deliberately recorded and circulated” videos of Kejriwal’s appearance before Justice Sharma on April 13 with the aim of tarnishing the image of the court.Claiming that Kejriwal and his associates hatched a “conspiracy” and adopted a “dirty strategy” to record the proceedings, the plea sought formation of an SIT to investigate the matter and initiation of contempt proceedings against “all the respondents who uploaded, reposted, forwarded the recording of the court proceedings dated 13.04.2026”.The petition has also demanded removal of the video from social media platforms.Earlier, on April 15, Singh had filed a complaint with the Registrar General of the High Court over alleged unauthorized recording of court proceedings. On Monday, Justice Sharma refused to recuse himself from the liquor policy case, observing that a litigant cannot be allowed to judge a judge without any material and cannot recuse himself on the basis of unfounded fears of bias.

80,000-year-old DNA from Stagnia Cave reveals oldest Neanderthal group in central-eastern Europe.

80,000-year-old DNA from Stajania Cave reveals oldest Neanderthal group in central-eastern Europe

Neanderthals are also continuing their journey through history, and the latest scientific study conducted in the Stajania Cave in Poland is bringing an exciting new dimension to it. For the first time, scientists have been able to reconstruct the oldest Neanderthal population in central-eastern Europe, giving us more information about how these prehistoric humans were able to adapt and survive in the wild. Through the use of DNA from cave deposits over 80,000 years old, scientists have managed to piece together information about this group of Neanderthals.

Oldest genetic evidence from Stagnia Cave in Europe

The discovery is based on a thorough examination of DNA taken from a Neanderthal tooth discovered in the Stagnia Cave. Using highly sophisticated paleogenomic methodology, scientists have successfully analyzed mitochondrial DNA and come to the conclusion that Neanderthals belonged to a branch genetically related to their contemporaries living in the Caucasus region. As mentioned in the article “The first multi-individual Neanderthal mitogenome from north of the Carpathians.,” published by Scientific Reports, the discovery indicates significant migration or at least contact of populations living across a large area of Eurasia. As the researchers write:“Genetic similarities of the Stegenia individual indicate a relationship between Central European and Caucasus Neanderthal populations.”In other words, there was no separate community of Neanderthals in Europe.

What clues does it leave? Neanderthal migration

The main importance of this discovery lies in throwing light on the migration routes adopted by the Neanderthals. The common genetics of different populations prove that they moved around much more than we previously thought.Scientists working on this project say that environmental factors such as climate change during the ice age could be the cause of these migrations. They state that:“Climateically forced migration events may have been the driver of many dispersals and population changes.”This discovery supports the common knowledge about the high adaptability of Neanderthals. Contrary to what people thought about them, that they lived in caves all the time, Neanderthals turned out to be very mobile.

Why is the Neanderthal discovery important?

The discovery of Neanderthals not only contributes to understanding the past but also provides knowledge of how humans evolved. The importance of the discoveries of the Stajania Cave cannot be ignored because they show how complex these ancient groups were and also confirm that human evolution did not occur in a linear manner. It is anticipated that there will be more such discoveries with continued advances in genetic technology. In short, the importance of these discoveries can be understood from the fact that Neanderthals were exactly like humans. They migrated, adapted themselves to new environments and became connected to far-flung places.
