New Delhi: Even as the dust has settled on Assam’s election campaign, Monday saw a heated exchange between Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the Congress, with Rahul Gandhi calling the Assam CM “the most corrupt in the country” who is “misusing the power of the state to harass his political opponents”.Supporting his party colleague Pawan Khera, whose Delhi home was raided by Assam Police following an explosive claim against Himanta’s wife, the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha said “Congress stands with Pawan Khera” and “the party will not be intimidated”.“The current CM of Assam is the most corrupt in the country. He will not escape the law. It is against the Constitution to misuse the power of the state to harass his political opponents and critics.” The questions being raised should be investigated. Transparency, accountability of power and rule of law are the foundation of our constitutional values. Congress party stands with Pawan Kheda. We will not be intimidated,” Rahul Gandhi wrote against Himanta, who switched from Congress to BJP in 2016.Himanta was on edge after Khera alleged at a press conference that the Assam Chief Minister’s wife held multiple foreign passports, following which the BJP leader issued a sharp rebuttal and issued legal threats.Kheda said, “We have documents that show that Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, holds three passports. The first is a UAE Golden Card, the second is an Antigua and Barbuda passport and the third is an Egyptian passport. Two of these are from Islamic countries, yet they continue to publicly claim religious observance.”Later, Sarma rejected the claims as politically motivated and said that both he and his wife would file a defamation case against Khera within 48 hours. He wrote onAs the confrontation started worsening, the Telangana High Court granted anticipatory bail to Khera in the case registered against him over his alleged derogatory remarks against CM Sarma and his wife.

Indian women’s hockey team: Lalthantluangi hopes to make her mark as India take on world No. 2 Argentina hockey news

Lalthantluangi hopes to make a mark when India take on world number two Argentina

As the Indian women’s hockey team begins its preparations for three major tournaments in the coming months with a four-match series against Argentina at Club Ciudad de Buenos Aires from Monday, one player who will try to impress coach Sord Marin is newcomer Lalthantluangi. The Mizo youth was part of the team that won the Junior Asia Cup in 2024 and participated in the Junior World Cup held in Chile last year. However, her real challenge begins now, as Marin looks to pit the team against the world No. 2 team. “She was hoping to get a call-up during the World Cup qualifiers itself and was heartbroken when she didn’t make the team. But I told her to keep believing and work hard, and she was very happy when she was finally selected,” said Miss B’Tei, Lalthantluangi’s longtime coach. Lalthantluangi, who has also played for Ranchi Royals during the Women’s Hockey India League (HIL), trained under Miss Batey from 2016, when she joined the SAI Hockey Center in Thenzawl, until she made it to the junior national camp in 2024. “We selected her after she competed in the Thenzawl Zone Middle School Sports Meet in 2016. She knew nothing about hockey then and played volleyball and football in her village, but we selected her because her physical attributes were very good,” said the coach, who trains around 40 students at Thenzawl Academy. While Miss Batey can’t wait to see her protégé play for the senior team, she is delighted with how her student Lalremsiami has inspired the newcomer to go even further. The coach further said, “Lalremsiami is a big inspiration for the players of Mizoram. She gives a lot of confidence to the youth and helps them in every possible way.” Naturally, Lalremsiami is eager to play with him. “It is a proud moment for me to have my junior in the team, especially since we both are from Mizoram. I know how hard it is to get to this level and how hard it is to get here,” Argentina’s Lalremsiami said. “As a player, he is very disciplined and it’s good to see his progress.” What’s even more special is how eagerly the academy players are waiting to see Lalthantluangi on the field in national colours. She will be the third player after Lalremsiami and Haniyalum Lalruatfeli to play for the Mizoram national women’s hockey team. “The excitement at the institute is very high as another player from here has got a chance to play at the international level. Other students are also very happy and motivated, they hope to play for the Indian team someday,” he said. As far as Marin is concerned, he is looking forward to seeing individual and team performances against the world No. 2 ranked team. “We are here with 23 players who will get a chance to show themselves. We will use this tour as an opportunity to play with different team combinations and find ways to win,” Marijne said in a statement.

US Iran conflict: Hormuz dispute: Iran criticizes ‘100% PhD’ for mocking Trump for ‘disrupting their blockade’

Hormuz dispute: Iran criticizes '100% PhD' for mocking Trump for 'stopping their blockade'
US President Donald Trump. (AP photo)

Iran mocked the US President on Monday donald trump Mocking their blockade announcement earlier that day with a meme that read ‘Break the enemy’s blockade by stopping their blockade.’Along with the meme, Iran also took a dig at Trump by writing in his style. “Trust me, I 100 percent have a PhD, okay? From the best college in the world. The best. Totally real. Everyone knows it.” And frankly, you will thank me very much for educating you. No one can give better education than me,” he wrote. It comes after Trump threatened to block the Strait of Hormuz after talks with Iran failed over the weekend, threatening to escalate the conflict now entering its seventh week, sending oil prices rising and raising fears of fresh global economic tensions. The US military said it would begin blocking all maritime traffic from Iranian ports from Monday (Washington time), while allowing ships to pass through the strait if they are not docking in Iran. Tehran immediately rejected the move, with senior adviser Mohsen Rezaei warning that Iran “will not allow” such a sanction and would retain “significant unused leverage” to counter it.The escalation comes after the breakdown of marathon talks in Pakistan, casting doubt on the fragile ceasefire agreed just days ago. Talks led by US Vice President JD Vance and Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf failed over disagreements over the future of Iran’s nuclear program.Speaking on Sunday, Trump signaled disinterest in reviving diplomacy and claimed Washington had already achieved key military objectives, including reducing Iran’s missile and drone capabilities.“If they don’t come back, I’m fine,” he said.Earlier, he took a more aggressive tone by declaring that the US was “locked and loaded” and ready to “eliminate” Iran’s remaining military capabilities. He warned of retaliation against any resistance, saying that any attack on American forces or commercial ships would be responded to with overwhelming force. The development threatens to prolong the war, which has already killed thousands and disrupted global energy markets. Oil and gas prices rose on Monday, with Brent crude jumping more than 9% to near $104 a barrel, while European gas futures rose sharply. Traders and refiners around the world are struggling to secure immediate crude supplies due to reduced physical flows. The Strait of Hormuz – through which about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas passes – remains the most important artery for global energy. A complete blockade would severely disrupt remaining shipments and add pressure to already volatile markets.According to Bloomberg, while blockades can be strategically decisive, their economic impact is rarely immediate. The current ceasefire is due to expire on April 22, although tensions are at risk of it collapsing sooner. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned that any foreign military presence near the strait would be viewed as a violation.Traffic through Hormuz has already slowed considerably since the US and Israeli attacks began in late February, with Iran tightening controls and imposing conditions on the route. While the US has the ability to enforce a blockade, analysts warn it carries serious risks – including direct exposure of US warships to Iranian missile and drone attacks and the possibility of Iran-backed groups such as the Houthis getting involved. With allies hesitant to join the operation and global markets on the sidelines, the threat of a blockade itself could prove as consequential as any action on the water – reducing the already shrinking space for diplomacy as well as increasing the risk of miscalculation.

‘Inches away from deal’: Iran on why US peace talks failed in Islamabad

'Inches away from deal': Iran on why US peace talks failed in Islamabad
Abbas Araghchi (Image/ANI)

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said Tehran was “inches away” from sealing a deal with Washington during high-level ceasefire talks held in Islamabad, before what he described as US “extremism” caused the talks to collapse. In a post on Twitter, Araghchi said Iran had entered the talks “in good faith” with the aim of ending the months-long conflict. “Iran negotiated with the US in good faith to end the war,” he wrote, adding that at a critical moment, “we faced extremism, shifting goalposts, and a blockade.”He said negotiators had come close to an agreement on what was being called the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding”, but the process broke down due to unresolved differences. “Just inches away from an agreement… we faced extremism, shifting goalposts and blockades,” he said. “Good will begets good will. Enmity begets enmity.”Iran mocks Trump Hormuz blockade, warns of global energy crisis – follow live updatesThe talks in Pakistan marked the highest level of engagement between the two sides in nearly five decades, and were aimed at securing a fragile ceasefire and addressing long-standing disputes over Iran’s nuclear program and regional security issues. However, the discussions ended without consensus, with both sides sharing blame over the failure to bridge key gaps. A US official, speaking anonymously, said Iran had not accepted several US “red lines”, including limits on uranium enrichment and broader safeguards.Shortly after the talks broke down, tensions escalated when US President Donald Trump announced that the US Navy would begin a blockade of ships entering or leaving the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route through which about a fifth of the world’s oil passes.US Central Command later clarified that the measures would focus on Iranian ports and be applied “impartially against ships of all countries”, while still allowing transit between non-Iranian ports through the strait.Iran responded by warning that the waterway would remain under its control. The Revolutionary Guard said military ships would face a “forceful response”, although non-military ships would still be allowed to pass. The renewed conflict has already roiled energy markets, with crude oil prices rising sharply after the blockade was announced.Despite the rupture, diplomatic efforts have not completely collapsed. Pakistan’s foreign minister said Islamabad would continue to facilitate talks, while Iran indicated it was open to further talks. The European Union and Oman also urged restraint and renewed talks, with Moscow offering assistance in mediation.Inside Iran, officials insisted that the failure of the talks was due to American overreach rather than irreconcilable differences on nuclear issues. A senior Iranian negotiator said the discussions failed on “two or three key issues”, and accused Washington of attempting to expand its demands at the last minute.

The failure of the Islamabad talks has left the future of the ceasefire uncertain, with no clarity on what happens next when the current ceasefire period ends at the end of this month.

Kuwait Citizenship Law Amendments: Kuwait tightens citizenship law, expands revocation powers and eligibility rules under new order | world News

Kuwait tightens citizenship law, expands revocation powers and eligibility rules under new order
Kuwait has made significant changes to its citizenship law, giving the government greater authority to grant and revoke nationality. The new decree tightens eligibility criteria, particularly for naturalization and marriage-based applications, while strengthening strict rules against dual nationality. These reforms aim to protect national identity and correct past irregularities, ensuring that citizenship is granted strictly by law.

Kuwait Sweeping amendments to its citizenship law were introduced under a new Emirati decree, expanding the government’s authority to grant and revoke nationality, while tightening eligibility criteria in several categories. The changes were issued under the directives of Sheikh Mishaal al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah and formalized through an Emirati decree-law as part of broader legal reforms aimed at protecting national identity and addressing long-standing concerns over citizenship irregularities.Interior Ministry officials said the amendments are designed to “preserve the integrity of Kuwaiti nationality” and ensure that citizenship is granted in strict accordance with the law.

Kuwait Citizenship Law Amendments 2026

Under the amended law, the government has expanded its power to revoke citizenship in specific cases, particularly where nationality was obtained on the basis of fraud, misrepresentation or false information. Officials clarified that such decisions would follow legal procedures and remain subject to review. The decree also includes stringent provisions relating to dual nationality, reaffirming Kuwait’s long-standing policy that citizens should not hold a second nationality unless explicitly permitted. Kuwaiti citizenship can now be withdrawn upon violation.Additionally, authorities have tightened monitoring of naturalization cases, placing greater scrutiny on applications and documentation. Officials said it is part of efforts to address past irregularities and ensure transparency in the citizenship process.

Eligibility under new Kuwaiti law

The amendments also reshape the eligibility pathways to obtain Kuwaiti citizenship. Authorities have introduced more stringent conditions for applicants, including longer residence requirements and strict background checks.Special provisions relating to citizenship by marriage have also been revised. Officials indicated that cases involving foreign spouses would now be thoroughly evaluated, with citizenship no longer granted automatically after a certain period of time, but subject to compliance with updated legal conditions.According to officials familiar with the changes, the reforms are intended to “balance humanitarian considerations with national interests”, particularly in sensitive categories such as family-based naturalization.

Government’s stance

In statements carried by state media, Interior Ministry officials stressed that the amendments are part of a broader national effort to strengthen the legal framework and prevent abuse of citizenship provisions.“The updated law reinforces Kuwait’s commitment to protecting its national identity and ensuring fairness in the application of citizenship rules,” an official statement said.Officials also stressed that enforcement will follow due process and that individuals affected by revocation decisions will have access to legal channels defined under Kuwaiti law.

looking ahead

For migrants and applicants, the new law signals a more controlled and strictly regulated citizenship process. Individuals seeking Kuwaiti nationality must meet strict eligibility standards and ensure full compliance with documentation requirements. For existing citizens, the amendments serve as a reminder of the legal obligations associated with nationality, particularly in relation to dual citizenship and accurate disclosure of information.Overall, the reforms mark a significant change in Kuwait’s approach towards citizenship, moving towards tighter monitoring, clearer legal authorities and stronger enforcement mechanisms.

‘Need for investigation’: Supreme Court seeks response from Centre, ECI on biometric voting petition. india news

'जांच की जरूरत': सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने बायोमेट्रिक वोटिंग याचिका पर केंद्र, ईसीआई से जवाब मांगाsupreme court of india On Monday, it agreed to examine a petition seeking implementation of finger and iris-based biometric identification at polling stations to curb duplicate and fake voting.A bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi issued notice to the Center Election Commission of IndiaAnd many states are seeking his reaction on this matter. However, the court made it clear that such a measure cannot be introduced for the ongoing state assembly elections.
