Suvendu competes with Didi in Bhawanipur, battle of Royal Bengal begins. india news

Royal Bengal fight has started between Suvendu and Didi in Bhawanipur.
Mamata Banerjee, Suvendu Adhikari

Kolkata: Bengal’s decisive match is being played in Bhawanipur, South Kolkata, where the CM Mamata Banerjee He will have to take on Suvendu Adhikari, a one-time BJP ally, which is an election contest with much bigger consequences than losing to him by a narrow margin in Nandigram in 2021. For the Trinamool Congress, retaining Bhawanipur is not just about securing Mamata’s fort and preserving the aura of invincibility around it. In many ways, this constituency represents the party’s conflict with the BJP over larger issues of identity, ideology and governance. BJP breaching Mamata’s stronghold will deal a psychological blow to Trinamool, even if the saffron party fails to win Bengal. The social mix of the constituency makes it an unusually sensitive voting area. This includes the so-called Bengali Bhadralok families, Marwari and Gujarati business families, Sikh and Jain residents, immigrants from Bihar and Odisha and a large Muslim electorate. “This diversity has turned this seat into a laboratory of competitive political tactics,” said Trinamool Ward 70 councilor Ashim Bose, whose challenge is to turn last year’s Lok Sabha loss into Mamata’s gain in his ward. The numbers show why both sides are brimming with confidence in Bhawanipur. CM Mamata won the 2021 by-election there by a record margin of 59,000 votes. But in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Trinamool’s lead in the assembly constituency has dropped to a little over 8,000. The BJP led in five of the eight wards, showing that while the Trinamool retained emotional capital, the saffron party gained regional depth.

One seat, many challenges

One seat, many challenges

Mamata aims to prevent Bhawanipur from turning into a fragmented social competition. His party’s strategy rests on familiarity and emotional ownership. Its “Ghorar Meye” (daughter of the house) pitch attempts to reduce the election from a verdict on governance to a display of neighborhood loyalty. “If there was any other candidate on the seat, it would have been extremely challenging for us,” said Trinamool worker Subhankar Roychowdhury. This approach is appropriate for a constituency where coexistence often matters as much as ideological mobilization. In mixed wards where Bengali Hindus, non-Bengali businessmen and Muslims live in close proximity, Trinamool’s emphasis on continuity and emotional connect is meant to reassure rather than provoke. Mamata’s appeal in such areas has long rested on welfare delivery, symbolic reach and the perception that she protects the pluralistic urban social order. BJP’s strategy is the opposite. Official election managers have tried to divide the constituency into its component communities and turn each into a manageable electoral block. During the campaign, this was noticeable in wards 63, 70, 71, 72 and 74, where the BJP’s recent gains indicate growing receptivity among non-Bengali businessmen and sections of the Hindu middle class. Muslim voters also remain at the center of arithmetic. They constitute a quarter of the electorate, and a united minority vote in a close urban seat could balance fragmentation among Hindu groups. That is why notice of deletion and investigation has been given in the case of voter list. BJP worker Jayant Ghosh said that Trinamool’s hold could be loosened due to the deletion of names of about 11,000 Muslim voters in Ward 77 during the SIR. Rajan Majumdar, an octogenarian supporter of the Left Front, said, “Bhabanipur adds the

Green Card Update: US judge rules USCIS can’t hold applications indefinitely, calls policy ‘unlawful’

US judge finds USCIS’ indefinite freeze on applications from immigrants from travel-ban countries was unlawful

A US federal judge has ruled that immigration officials cannot indefinitely block green card applications from immigrants from countries under travel bans, calling the policy unlawful and ordering the government to resume processing some cases. In a 39-page decision, Maryland District Judge George L. Russell III said the policy adopted by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is an “unlawful, blatant and indefinite bar,” affecting dozens of applicants already living in the US.The judge wrote: “USCIS does not have the discretion to decide whether to adjudicate.” He directed the agency to resume work on the applications of 83 persons related to the case. The decision focuses on a policy that stopped green card processing for immigrants from 39 countries subject to travel restrictions or visa limits. This was for security and new arrivals, but it also prevented people already living in the US from moving forward with their applications.Campaigners say the impact has been significant. Project Press Unpause, a group tracking the issue, estimates that despite more than $1 billion in fees collected, more than two million applications have been left unprocessed.“This sends a clear message that this policy is arbitrary and capricious. Most of us have been in the country for 5+ years, have had no problems with the law, are dedicated taxpayers and have even been granted national interest exemptions because of the work we do,” a spokesperson named LaVida told Newsweek. The spokesperson said: “We are legal immigrants (the kind of immigrants this administration claims only to want), who have contributed positively to the American economy but are now barred indefinitely because of our country of birth – something we cannot control.”The GOP government had argued that courts should not interfere in immigration matters and that federal agencies have considerable discretion over how to handle applications. However, the judge rejected this, saying that the agencies cannot completely refuse to take decisions on them. The blockage in applications came from presidential orders under the Immigration and Nationality Act, which restricted entry from certain high-risk countries. USCIS then applied this to green card cases and barred applications based on country of birth, even for people already living legally in the US.Judge Russell said many of those affected had lived in the country for years and had maintained legal status throughout the country. The court has now ordered USCIS to resume processing the applications of those involved in the lawsuit, but has not imposed any strict deadline for a decision. In response, a USCIS spokesperson defended the hold, saying, “USCIS has paused all adjudications for aliens from high-risk countries while USCIS works to ensure that all aliens from these countries are screened and investigated to the maximum possible degree. This hold will allow for a comprehensive investigation of all pending benefit requests for aliens from designated high-risk countries. The safety of the American people always comes first.”The ruling doesn’t immediately apply to all affected immigrants, and the agency can still continue withholding for those who are not part of the case. However, the court has made it clear that indefinite and complete stay is not permissible under the law. This comes as green card applicants in the US are facing long delays, waiting months or even years for their cases to be processed due to the massive backlog at USCIS.

Violence in Jagaddal before PM Modi’s visit: BJP-TMC clash, MLA’s residence bombed, 3 injured

Kolkata: Hours before PM Modi addressed a rally in Jagaddal in Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district on Monday, a clash broke out between TMC and BJP workers barely 400 meters from the venue, which escalated into firing, stone pelting and crude bomb attacks, in which a CISF jawan was injured by a bullet.Six others were also injured. Jawan Yogesh Sharma has been taken to a private hospital.Police have arrested four people including TMC councilor Gopal Raut. EC has asked for a report.BJP’s Noapara candidate Rajesh Kumar said the unrest started when he went to Jagaddal police station to lodge an FIR against CM Mamata Banerjee. He alleged that the police refused to register it and a mob of around 200 people belonging to TMC stormed the station and attacked them, forcing the police to “flee from the spot”.Trinamool candidate Amit Singh disputed his statement. “We had gone to file a complaint against the BJP for attacking our workers. We were attacked first. Arjun Singh (former BJP MP) reached there and pushed everyone, as seen in the CCTV footage, and violence broke out,” he said.BJP workers alleged that TMC-supported miscreants targeted the residence of Arjun’s son and Bhatpara candidate Pawan Singh with stones and bullets. A CISF jawan who was part of his security squad was shot in the leg.Police said a mob of about 200 people entered the police station and later attacked a candidate’s residence with explosives and firearms.Arjun said Trinamool candidate Somnath Shyam and Barrackpore MP Partha Bhowmik led the miscreants in the planned attack to disrupt the PM’s rally. “Bullets were fired and bombs were thrown at Pawan Singh’s house,” he said. Shyam, in turn, accused Arjun Singh of bringing in “miscreants”.Meanwhile, the Election Commission said that the crowd got agitated due to the visit of a candidate.

She Solved a 400-Year-Old Problem That Newton and Kepler Couldn't: Meet Ukrainian Mathematician Maryna Viazovska

Imagine trying to stack oranges as tightly as possible so that no space is wasted. Pretty simple at the grocery store. Now imagine doing this in a world of eight dimensions, a place that exists not in physical reality but in the abstract architecture of mathematics, and proving without a doubt that you have found the most perfect arrangement possible. For more than 400 years, the greatest mathematical minds on Earth couldn’t do it. In 2016, a quietly determined Ukrainian mathematician named Maryna Viazovska did just that. She was 31 years old and working alone in Berlin. What he created wasn’t just a solution, it was a masterpiece.

Marina solved a 400 year old problem! viazovska

The problem of packing spheres seems deceptively simple: What is the most efficient way to arrange identical spheres so that they fill space with as few wasted gaps as possible? In three dimensions, the answer is intuitive, a pyramid shape, the way fruit is stacked in a market. Johannes Kepler proposed this arrangement as optimal in 1611, but it took until 1998 for a formal mathematical proof to be completed, and even that proof required long, controversial computer calculations running hundreds of pages. However, move beyond three dimensions, and the problem becomes an entirely different animal. In dimensions four, five, six, seven, mathematicians had almost nothing. As MIT’s Henry Cohn described it after Viazowska’s success: “It is this catastrophic gap in our knowledge that is almost shameful to humanity.”Of all the higher dimensions, eight were special. Mathematicians long suspected that the answer lay in a structure called the E8 lattice, an arrangement of extraordinary symmetries that exists only in eight-dimensional space. More than a decade before Viazovska’s proof, Kohn and mathematician Noam Elkies had calculated that the E8 lattice was accurate to within one billionth of one percent of the theoretical optimum. They could almost touch the north. But they could not prove it. No one could do it.

Evidence that will shock the world in just 23 pages

Viazovska had been struggling with this problem for years. The key insight came from an unexpected direction: his doctoral work on modular forms, a type of highly symmetric mathematical function that normally resides in the world of number theory, which appears to be very far from geometry. He studied under the renowned mathematician Don Zagier at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn, where he completed his PhD in 2013.His success was in using the tools of Fourier analysis and modular forms to construct a special “magic function” that could serve as an exact upper bound, a mathematical ceiling for which dense regions could possibly be packed. When he compared that roof to the E8 mesh, they matched perfectly. This type of exact match is exceptionally rare. In mathematics, this is the equivalent of cutting a key in the dark and finding it to open a lock.

Visualization of the E8 lattice, a highly symmetric structure that solves spherical packing in eight dimensions.

Visualization of the E8 lattice, a highly symmetric structure that solves spherical packing in eight dimensions.

The proof was uploaded to the academic preprint server in March 2016. It was 23 pages long. Earlier attempts at related problems spanned hundreds of pages. The mathematical community was stunned not only by the solution, but also by its beauty. Experts described it as “surprisingly simple” and praised its clarity and originality. Within a week of its publication, Viazowska had solved that version of the problem using a structure called a Leech lattice, joining with four colleagues to extend the same approach to 24-dimensional space. Two big problems, both solved within a few days.

Why are any of these matters beyond pure mathematics?

It would be easy to dismiss this as beautiful but impractical mathematics conducted in a rarefied universe that normal life never touches. That would be a mistake.Sphere packing in higher dimensions is deeply linked to error correction codes, the technique that allows information to be accurately transmitted across noisy channels. Every time you stream a video, make a phone call, or receive a file without any corruption, error correction codes are working quietly in the background. The mathematical structures that govern optimal field packing are the same structures that underlie how to efficiently encode and decode information. Viazowska’s work not only satisfied centuries of curiosity, but it expanded the theoretical foundations on which applied mathematicians and engineers work.Their results have also opened new doors in theoretical physics and cryptography, fields where the geometry of high-dimensional space has direct and practical consequences.

the woman behind the math

Viazovska was born in Kyiv in 1984, the eldest of three sisters, and showed an early passion for mathematics through school competitions and Olympiads. He received a bachelor’s degree from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, a master’s degree from the University of Kaiserslautern in Germany, and a doctorate from the University of Bonn. She is now full professor and chair of number theory at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland.

Her teenage son Michael once recalled being the last child picked up from a Berlin kindergarten while his mother was busy working on an E8 proof. When he later learned of the Fields Medal, he reportedly said: “Now I understand why he worked so hard.”In July 2022, Viazovska was awarded the Fields Medal, widely considered the Nobel Prize of mathematics and restricted to mathematicians under the age of 40. She became only the second woman to receive it in the 86-year history of the prize, after Iranian mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani in 2014. The award was announced just weeks after Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. In interviews, Viazowska spoke quietly but strongly about her country: “Tyrants can’t stop us from doing mathematics. At least there’s something they can’t take away from us.”More than four centuries after Kepler first asked the question, the answer in eight dimensions came not through brute computational force, but through a woman’s creative intuition and a set of tools borrowed from an unrelated corner of mathematics. This is what makes Maryna Viazowska’s story so remarkable and worth remembering.

Ben Pasternak: Ben Pasternak breaks silence on Evelyn Ha’s abuse allegations: The entire controversy explained

Ben Pasternak breaks silence on Evelyn Ha's abuse allegations: The whole controversy explained

The affair between Ben Pastrnak and Evelyn Ha has become a big topic online. The couple ended their relationship on March 31, 2026, after an alleged fight in a New York hotel. Weeks later, Pasternak was arrested and charged with serious crimes, including second-degree strangulation and assault. He has said that he is not guilty. His legal team claims he acted in self-defense. The case is now heading to court, with a hearing scheduled for June. After remaining silent for several days, Pasternak spoke out and released a video on April 26, 2026. He denied beating Ha, saying that things are not always as they seem. She argued that throughout their relationship, she was abused. His response quickly spread online, with many people reacting on both sides. Now, the situation has turned into a complicated matter with both Pasternak and Ha making strong claims.

Ben Pasternak reacts as Evelyn Ha’s allegations spark widespread controversy

In his video, Pasternak clearly denied the main allegation. He said, “I’ve never strangled anyone in my entire life. I’m not physically aggressive… Most people would describe me as a very gentle person.” She also claimed that Ha had abused her during their relationship.Pasternak said that Ha used to hit and scratch him and that people around him knew this. he adds, “She had a physical relationship with me and it was an open secret among her sisters and my friends.” She also mentioned that a couple’s therapist knew about these issues and had suggested serious steps like a restraining order. He also claimed that there was evidence to support his side. According to him, there are medical reports, photographs of injuries and even letters from Ha’s previous associates. He said, “There’s a lot of documents…it’s not going anywhere except to court.”Right now, both sides have made serious claims, and the truth is likely to come out during the legal process. Pasternak has already pleaded not guilty and the court will look at all the evidence before making any decision. This case illustrates the complexity that can arise in personal relationships. As each side tells their own story, the final outcome will depend on which side presents enough evidence for the judge to believe. At present everyone is waiting to see what will happen next.

Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir High Court on Monday canceled the detention of Mehraj Malik, the lone AAP MLA in the Union Territory Assembly, under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA) and directed the authorities to release him immediately.Granting relief to the Doda East MLA, Justice Mohammad Yousuf Wani said the charges against him essentially fall within the ambit of ordinary law and order and cannot be stretched to justify preventive detention. Malik was detained about eight months ago on charges of misbehavior with a senior Doda official.Malik (37) termed the PSA detention order issued by Doda DM as arbitrary, politically motivated and an abuse of preventive detention powers and demanded a compensation of Rs 5 crore from the authorities. The HC held that the allegations against Malik are under investigation or at the trial stage before the courts and there is no apprehension that he will commit acts prejudicial to public order. However, the government defended the action, arguing that Malik had a tendency to disturb public order and that his detention followed reports from the police, magistrate officials and other inputs.Malik has been kept in Kathua jail. Malik’s lawyer and AAP spokesperson Appu Singh Salathia said, “We have won this legal battle. This has strengthened our faith in the judiciary. It was a tough journey of eight months. But as the saying goes, all’s well that ends well. Soon Malik will be with all of us and his supporters.”

This became the team’s lowest score of the season and RCB won comfortably by nine wickets.Axar said in the post-match presentation, “Even I don’t know what happened. That’s why they say you have to be on your toes in cricket. We have to move on from this match.”He also took a look at key moments from recent matches, including the missed single against Gujarat Titans and Karun Nair’s dropped catch against Punjab Kings.“From today’s point of view, you can say it had an impact, but you can look back, if (Nair) had been caught or we had taken a single against GT, the momentum would have been with us. The game is such that there is no room for ifs and buts. You have to be positive, you have had a bad day and take positives from the last 5-6 games.”However, the Delhi captain was not convinced that there was too much swing on offer, even though Bhuvneshwar’s inswinger bowled debutant Sahil Parakh.“I wasn’t surprised, they are world-class bowlers, they swing on every ground, but if our openers or top order had played them the result could have been different.”Hazlewood, who dismissed KL Rahul and Nitish Rana with short balls, said he was unsure what to expect from the pitch after scoring over 500 in the previous match at the same venue.“Probably coming here after scoring 500-plus in the last game and not being sure what was going to happen,” Hazlewood said, adding that he followed Bhuvneshwar.Hazlewood said, “Just following his (Bhuvneshwar) lead. There was a little bit in the first six overs – enough to work with, and it was skidding off short lengths quickly. Once the ball got softer, it became even more so.”He also told how he planned to dismiss Rana.“Normally, you wanted the batsman to hit it down the wicket and into the V. The short ball was good too, all about accuracy. When that ball was nice and hard, it was tough to bat. “It would have been nice to bowl four balls and go out,” Hazlewood said.RCB captain Rajat Patidar also admitted that he was surprised by the behavior of the pitch.“Even I am surprised by the way the wicket has played,” he said.“All credit goes to the bowlers, Bhuvi and Hazlewood. They bowled in the right areas. The swing was normal but the good thing was that we got early wickets and that kept us in the driving seat. The way Suyyash Sharma bowled stump to stump, it was really good to see,” he said.
