New Delhi: Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi On Wednesday accused the Center of trying to usurp power through the Delimitation Bill, saying the Women’s Reservation Bill has already been passed in 2023. congress party “Clearly” supported women’s reservation. He termed the BJP-led Centre’s proposed move to increase the Lok Sabha strength from 543 to 850 from southern and other regions as well as OBC, Dalit and tribal communities as “share theft”.He said, “The Congress party clearly supports women’s reservation. Parliament passed the bill unanimously in 2023, it is already part of our Constitution. What the government is proposing now has nothing to do with women’s reservation. This amendment is an attempt to gain power using delimitation and gerrymandering.”“We will not allow ‘share stealing’ from OBC, Dalit and tribal communities by ignoring caste census data. We will not allow the southern, north-eastern, north-western and small states to be treated unfairly.”The Nari Shakti Vandan Act, 2023, which ensures 33% reservation for women in legislatures, is currently attached to the delimitation exercise in the Lok Sabha. The government is reportedly looking to implement women’s reservation before the 2029 general elections by amending the 2023 Act and introducing a constitutional amendment to delink delimitation from the 2027 census. According to sources reported by ANI, there is also a proposal to expand the size of the House to 850 seats, which includes 815 seats for states and 35 seats for Union Territories, compared to the current strength of 543 Lok Sabha seats.
