Maharashtra Day is celebrated every year on 1 May to mark the formation of the state of Maharashtra in 1960. After India became independent, the issue of state reorganization on the basis of language was gaining momentum. It was through the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement that the need for Maharashtra state was strongly felt.Ultimately, it was through this movement that the Bombay Reorganization Act, 1960 was enacted, as a result of which Bombay State was divided into Maharashtra and Gujarat on May 1, 1960. Bombay was made the capital of Maharashtra. Thus began the journey to a new state.It is an event that holds immense cultural and emotional significance for the residents of Maharashtra. The event celebrates not only the establishment of the state but also its culture, language and traditions. Maharashtra Day recognizes the efforts made in the formation of Maharashtra and helps in creating a strong sense of unity among the people of the state. It is also a testament to Maharashtra’s contribution to India’s economy, culture and society.CelebrationThis day is celebrated in various forms across the state. Cultural programs and events consisting of traditional dance and music like Lavani dance are organized in various educational institutions.events * Flag hoisting ceremonies were organized at government organisations, educational institutions and various other public places* The main event on this occasion is held at Shivaji Park in Mumbai, where the Governor and the Chief Minister perform the flag hoisting ceremony and address the people.* Police demonstrated their efficiency and discipline in a parade and march past.* Cultural programs include Lavani dance, folk songs and other Marathi cultural programs* Tribute to the leaders who contributed to the success of the United Maharashtra Movement* Presentation of awards to winners for various achievements of Maharashtra* Local programs were organized at city levels like Pune, Nagpur, Nashik, Aurangabad etc.Additionally, there are many institutions that organize talks, competitions and exhibitions related to the historical and other achievements of Maharashtra. Awards are also given to people who contribute in various fields of life. Although there are large celebrations on this occasion, there are also some instances where the celebrations were cut short due to vagaries of weather.
