Maharashtra Day is celebrated every year on 1 May to mark the formation of the state of Maharashtra in 1960. After India became independent, the issue of state reorganization on the basis of language was gaining momentum. It was through the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement that the need for Maharashtra state was strongly felt.Ultimately, it was through this movement that the Bombay Reorganization Act, 1960 was enacted, as a result of which Bombay State was divided into Maharashtra and Gujarat on May 1, 1960. Bombay was made the capital of Maharashtra. Thus began the journey to a new state.It is an event that holds immense cultural and emotional significance for the residents of Maharashtra. The event celebrates not only the establishment of the state but also its culture, language and traditions. Maharashtra Day recognizes the efforts made in the formation of Maharashtra and helps in creating a strong sense of unity among the people of the state.
