Trump pauses speech in awkward moment to praise Rory McIlroy’s Masters win at White House dinner international sports news
It was a carefully orchestrated evening at the White House, a formal state dinner donald trump to King Charles III and Queen Camilla, with the usual rhythm of prepared remarks and polite applause, until the president broke away from his notes in the middle of the speech and drew the room’s attention to one guest in particular: Rory McIlroy. McIlroy, seated among dozens of high-profile attendees, had arrived in Washington just weeks after a Masters victory that transcended golf, a performance at Augusta that saw him take a strong lead before a late push by Scottie Scheffler, Cameron Young and Justin Rose ultimately closed it out to secure his second green jacket and, in doing so, become only the fourth player to win back-to-back Masters titles.

Trump responded publicly just hours after that win, posting on Truth Social: “Congratulations to Rory McIlroy on another great championship, The Masters! He performed tremendously well under extreme pressure, something some people wouldn’t even think possible. Every year, Rory is becoming more and more of a legend! I look forward to seeing him compete in two weeks at Doral.” But Tuesday night, it became clear he wanted to say it again, this time in person, and in front of a room that didn’t expect a disruption.
“Where’s Rory McIlroy?”
Midway through his address, Trump paused and moved away from the prepared flow of the speech, moving toward a point about flexibility before suddenly making it specific. “The whole world has been uplifted by this unique and special character of ours. This invincible courage, this invincible courage. It really is, it’s unbeatable. “Speaking of which, where’s Rory McIlroy? Can you stand Rory up, please? “That was incredible courage. That was awesome, Rory. I don’t know if it helps him to talk about how amazing the speech was… but I had to stop my speech because I watched the guy win a tournament that was so tough. “Congratulations, so proud of you.” The room burst into applause as McIlroy stood up to accept the recognition, although there was a slight awkwardness to the moment, which is what happens when a formal setting briefly becomes unscripted and personal, with the golfer accepting the accolade before returning to his planned course for the evening.
Doral, absences and a different kind of schedule
The White House moment also comes with a different subplot.. Despite Trump’s public excitement about seeing McIlroy compete at his course, the Northern Irishman will not be part of the field at the upcoming Cadillac Championship, which returns to Trump National Doral, specifically the Blue Monster layout, for the 2026 edition scheduled from April 29 to May 3. According to his former agent Andrew “Chubby” Chandler, the location is close to McIlroy’s home in Jupiter, Florida, which is about 90 miles away, a short flight, and it is a course he knows well, as he has played several rounds there with Trump in the past. The tournament itself is one of the PGA Tour’s eight signature events, structured without a 36-hole cut, yet McIlroy has opted to skip it, instead opting to step away for a short time after the Masters. He is expected to return to action next week at the Truist Championship from May 7 to 10 at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, a course that has historically suited him, before the next major on the calendar, the PGA Championship, which begins on May 14.
