New Delhi: Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday described the defeat of the delimitation bill in Parliament as a “victory for democracy” and accused the Center of conspiring to change the federal structure of the country.Addressing a press conference, Priyanka said that the Center is planning to remain in power by using women.The Congress leader said, “What happened yesterday was a major victory for democracy. The government’s conspiracy to change the federal structure and weaken democracy was defeated and stopped. It was a victory for the Constitution, a victory for the country and a victory for the unity of the opposition and it was clearly visible on the faces of the ruling party leaders.”He said, “I think it is a conspiracy that somehow they have to remain in power… So, to achieve this, they are planning how to remain in power permanently by using women… They thought that if it is passed, they will win. If it is not passed, they will become protectors of women by branding other parties as anti-women… We know it is not easy for women to become protectors.”Priyanka also asked the Center to bring back the unanimously passed bill in 2023. Priyanka said, “It is a dark day for them (Centre) because for the first time they have got the shock they deserved. Today, women’s problems are increasing rapidly. The struggle is increasing. Women are not stupid. They see everything. That PR and media hype will not work now. If you want to do something concrete, bring back the bill which was passed unanimously in 2023, which had the support of all parties.”“If you need to make some small modifications to it so that it can be implemented now, do that and implement it now. Give women their rights now. But do not try to mislead them by twisting it and linking it to other things. Do it now. We are all ready,” she said.His comments came after the Bill proposing reservation for women through the delimitation process could not garner the required two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha, with 298 members voting in favor and 230 voting against it.Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla announced that the Constitution Amendment Bill has not been passed. After the results, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that the government will not move forward on the remaining two related bills.The BJP has accused the opposition parties of blocking a landmark reform aimed at ensuring 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies. Union Home Minister Amit Shah alleged that Congress, TMC and other parties prevented the bill from being passed and warned of political consequences.However, the opposition says it supports women’s reservation in principle but opposes linking it to the delimitation and census processes. Leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, described the bill as an attempt to change India’s electoral structure, while several Congress leaders described the vote as a defense of democratic values.
