Kaveri Nambisan on writing from memory, imagination and intimacy

Kaveri Nambisan on writing from memory, imagination and intimacy

Excerpts from the interview:Why: : How Did this book pass through? A: : Most of my books begin with a character…, not a specific person, but someone in a village in the 1920s. This is what I was imagining in my mind: living in a village, growing up there and then moving out of the village during a period that coincides with the beginning of India’s struggle for independence. And I wondered what would happen to the young man who heard about it… but it was all very vague in my mind. That’s why I first started building that village. And that’s how I thought about parents, and then Devrai came into existence. Making Kesarugattu, meaning mud village, was a very interesting experience… The initial chapters go very deep into the social fabric of rural life and the complexities, frictions and companionship… Why: : wCap Were creative sets you free took?Is it possible gang up universal blueprint of a Villagee or Caste structures? A: : I think they’re particular to each location… A hundred years ago people assumed that this hierarchy was necessary. And when anyone tried to break that hierarchy and do anything outside it, there would be consequences… When people respected the boundaries, castes co-existed peacefully, it was important for the upper castes. And the upper castes have no objection to other castes entering, but they do not want others to move forward...Devaraya himself is a Brahmin, but there is another Brahmin character who is a priest in the temple. And his beliefs are very rigid and he cannot tolerate any intrusion. There is an example in the book where a girl of about nine years old and her dog inadvertently violate something that is sacred to the religion. But its effect is very serious on both. I imagined these stories. But because I work closely with the village people, I have seen the kind of exploitation, injustice that happens. And people think that this is all right, that is not considered injustice. It is like showing a person his proper place. Why: : htoo much Research did you to do? A: : I did very little research. If you know something deeply, you sit back and let your imagination do the work. That means you let yourself go into those houses and sit with your characters. You know, you’re hearing what they think, what they would do. When this whole tragic incident about Devrai came to my mind, it kind of came to me… This is not a historical book, but history is always in the foreground and background and so is caste. We cannot forget these two things in that period of Indian history. And it amazes me that we don’t pay enough attention to this… After I’ve written everything, I’ll usually go back if I’ve mentioned dates or talked about a certain thing in history, just to make sure it’s correct… I felt like the South was overlooked in fiction. Most of our leaders that we know come from the northern and western states. I read about him to some extent, like about Periyar Ramaswami Iyer. There were a lot of ordinary people in the South who dropped out of college, who left their jobs, who joined the freedom movement. Many people were killed, many had to suffer, many had to go to jail. Why: : Iit was fantastic that you managed to take away memories across. A: : My father was in politics and he joined the freedom movement at a very young age. He went to jail. So even though I wasn’t born at that time,…sometimes you would hear him talk about how they were punished, what was done, how the food was. And I have heard how big leaders like Rajagopalachari or Kamaraj and Nehru, when they were in jail, used to take classes for young people. He taught them economics, history, science. They took it upon themselves because they knew that these young people had dropped out of college or left their jobs to join the struggle. And I’ve heard my father say that it was the best education he ever had. So these were the realities that I have used in a different way in the book. Why: : Fiction lends Self to become Great treasury of these historical Description, Use to live Memories, testimony A: : There were a lot of old people at one of my readings in Bengaluru. And many of them came up to me later and said how much of it they remembered. They were telling me things I’d heard about, but they’d lived it, and they loved the book because it brought back memories. Why: : how did you switch like this beautifully between Male and this Female voices? A: : I spend a lot of time with the characters… I really try to place them and I become a fly on the wall… Only then do I understand the natural thing that ‘What will this person do in such a situation?’ I don’t, because otherwise I would impose my views and ideologies on them. That’s why when certain characters do something and I don’t want them to do it, I’ll say, ‘Oh no, please don’t do that.’ But you know that person is meant to do this...I think it’s very important for a writer to be able to deal with gender, not just identify your side of your gender… And when you understand the opposite, then you understand yourself better because both are very closely linked to each other throughout life. I think there’s probably a certain level of asexuality that you have to bring to writing as well as being aware of gender and its implications. Why: what were Topic You districtsis discussed How else did it Get selected? A: : I did not discuss any other titles. A lot of people asked me, ‘Why Rising Sons?’ It seemed as if some people thought the whole story was about men. But I guess I didn’t have any particular reason for anything. Like, I have books that feature male protagonists and I also have books that feature female protagonists. But I feel the story demands something and I do it. And ‘Rising Sons’, for me, was generational because there are so many people in it. It is Devaraya himself who has to rise. He has two sons, he has friends. Getting up and doing something was the domain of men during those years. Women held the fort, many of them stepped into other types of work, but generally it was the men. And I think if you can understand men, you can understand what women go through.

Promise or pressure? Why did TMC candidate Jahangir Khan withdraw from Falta re-poll?

New Delhi: Trinamool Congress Falta (TMC) candidate Jahangir Khan withdrew his candidature on Tuesday, days before re-polling was scheduled for Falta. He cited this in a press conference Chief Minister of West Bengal Suvendu Adhikari’s “special package” for Falta is the reason for their retreat.“I am a son of Falta and I want there to be peace and development in the region,” he said. “The Chief Minister has announced a special package for the development of Falta, which is why I have decided to step away from the re-polling process in the constituency,” he said. However, the TMC gave its clarification that Khan’s decision was personal, adding that “some people succumbed to pressure”. “Jahangir Khan’s decision to withdraw from the Falta re-poll is his personal decision and not that of the party. More than 100 of our party workers have been arrested in Falta AC alone since the election results were declared on May 4. Many party offices have been vandalized, locked down and forcibly taken over in broad daylight through intimidation, while the Election Commission continues to turn a blind eye despite repeated complaints,” a post on X said.It further said, “Despite such pressure, our workers have stood firm and continue to resist the BJP’s intimidation spread through agencies and administration. However, some ultimately succumbed to the pressure and decided to withdraw from the field. We strongly condemn this. Our fight against the anti-Bangla BJP will continue – both in West Bengal and Delhi.”The repoll in the Falta constituency was ordered after the Election Commission canceled the entire original poll at all 285 polling stations, citing “serious electoral crimes and subversion of the democratic process”. In its statement, the commission said the decision was taken following reports of serious electoral crimes and large-scale subversion of the democratic process during voting on April 29. The observers’ report highlighted several alleged irregularities, including tampering with electronic voting machines, voter intimidation and violation of voting norms. Ballot unit buttons at several booths were reportedly covered with black tape, disrupting the voting process. There were also allegations of unauthorized persons entering polling stations and voting in place of others. Missing or inconsistent video footage further raised concerns over transparency. Now re-polling is to be held on May 21, while counting of votes will take place on May 24.

An economic storm is about to come. His Adani-Ambani structure will not last long; it will collapse. The unfortunate thing is that the common man will suffer.”He said, “The economic shock will not have any impact on Adani, Ambani and Modi; it will have a deep impact on the common man. Instead of taking action, Narendra Modi is asking people not to undertake foreign trips while he himself is on a world tour.”Earlier on Tuesday, petrol and diesel prices were hiked by nearly 90 paise per litre, the second increase in fuel rates in less than a week after state-run oil companies ended a nearly four-year moratorium on revision.Petrol prices in the national capital rose to Rs 98.64 per litre, while diesel prices rose to Rs 91.58 per litre. MEA vs Norwegian Press during the fourth leg of PM Modi’s five-nation visit

'We are proud of democracy': MEA vs Norwegian press during the fourth leg of PM Modi's five-nation visit

New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has strongly objected to questions on press freedom and human rights during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Norway, saying many international observers fail to understand the scale and complexity of the country and rely on reports published by “ignorant NGOs”.The comments come after a Norwegian journalist publicly claimed that PM Modi did not raise his question during a media interaction with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Storey in Oslo. The journalist also noted India’s position in the World Press Freedom Index and criticized the lack of questions during press appearances, asking, “Why should we trust India?”

‘1/6th of the world’s population but not 1/6th of the world’s problems’: External Affairs Ministry

Responding to questions, Sibi George, Secretary (West), Ministry of External Affairs, defended India’s democratic institutions and constitutional framework.“We’ve heard a lot of people asking why this, why that, but let me tell you this. We are one-sixth of the world’s population, but not one-sixth of the world’s problems,” he said during a press conference.“We have a Constitution that guarantees the fundamental rights of people. Women in our country have equal rights, which is very important,” she said.

‘People have no understanding of the scale of India’

The External Affairs Ministry official also criticized international commentary on India and said many people form opinions without understanding the country’s vast media ecosystem.George said, “You know how many stories there are here. How many breaking news we have every day in the evening. There are at least 200 TV channels in Delhi alone, in English language, Hindi language and many more languages.”He said, “People have no understanding of the scale of India. People have no understanding. You know, they read one or two news reports published by some forgotten, ignorant NGO and then come and ask questions.”He said, “In 1947 we gave our women the freedom to vote. We got independence together and got the right to vote from the first day. I know many countries where women got the right to vote after many decades. We believe in equality; we believe in human rights. If anyone’s rights are violated, they have the right to go to court. We are proud to be a democracy.”

What might have started the dispute?

The controversy erupted when Norwegian journalist Helle Ling questioned PM Modi as he was leaving the hall with PM Storey after giving a media statement.Later, Ling shared a video of the moment on X, saying, “Prime Minister of IndiaNarendra Modi will not answer my question, I did not expect this from him.”He also referred to India’s ranking in the World Press Freedom Index, saying, “Norway is at number one position” while “India is at 157th position.”However, the Indian Embassy in Norway responded to his post and invited him to attend an official press conference later in the evening.“The Embassy is organizing a press conference on the Prime Minister’s visit today at 9.30 pm at Hotel Radisson BluPlaza. “You are welcome to come and ask your questions,” the embassy said.Ling also posted that she was “very disappointed that the Prime Minister of Norway did not include time for Indian journalists today.”

Even Norway’s PM did not take any questions: BJP

The episode also sparked political controversy, with opposition leaders targeting PM Modi over the joint media interaction. Taking a dig at the Prime Minister, Rahul Gandhi said, “When there is nothing to hide, there is nothing to fear.”Sharing the video on Twitter, Rahul said, ‘What happens to India’s image when the world sees a compromised PM panicking and running away from some questions?’Congress leader Jairam Ramesh also hit out at PM Modi over his interactions with European leaders during the visit and asked, “What is the fake wisdom given by the self-proclaimed but completely exposed world guru to the Dutch PM, who actually called him?”Responding to the criticism, BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya defended PM Modi and pointed out that even the Norwegian Prime Minister did not answer questions during the joint press conference.Sharing a post on X, Malviya said, “Norway’s Prime Minister also did not raise any questions in the joint press briefing of the two leaders.”He said, “But the crazy Congress machinery led by Rahul Gandhi is fuming over the absurd statement of a criminal journalist. One wonders whether, like the journalist, the Congress leadership is also on the side of those who do not want to see a strong and powerful India.”PM Modi arrived in Oslo on Monday as part of his six-day, five-nation tour to attend the third India-Nordic summit and hold bilateral talks with Nordic leaders.

Delhi HC issues notice to Arvind Kejriwal, Sisodia and other AAP leaders in contempt case over ‘derogatory’ posts against judge

Delhi HC issues notice to Arvind Kejriwal, Sisodia and other AAP leaders in contempt case over 'derogatory' posts against judge

New Delhi: Delhi High Court on Tuesday issued notice to former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind KejriwalFormer Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and other AAP leaders in a criminal contempt case related to alleged “derogatory” and defamatory social media posts targeting a judge. The high court also gave four weeks’ time to AAP leaders to file their reply in the case. The next hearing has been fixed for August 4.The contempt proceedings stem from the ongoing Delhi excise policy case, in which the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has challenged the trial court’s order discharging Kejriwal, Sisodia and 21 others. The contempt case relates to allegations that certain social media posts and online campaigns attempted to defame the judiciary and undermine the authority of the court after Justice Swarn Kanta Sharma refused to recuse herself from hearing the case.

Contempt proceedings transferred to another bench

Justice Sharma had earlier observed that “highly scandalous, extremely contemptuous and defamatory material” was being circulated against him and the court. He said that he has decided to initiate contempt proceedings against some of the respondents and other alleged contemnors. However, the judge clarified that she is not recusing herself from the excise policy case but has transferred the main case to another bench on grounds of “judicial propriety and discipline” after initiating contempt proceedings. The contempt case has now been assigned to a division bench of Justice Navin Chawla and Justice Ravinder Dudeja, while Justice Manoj Jain is expected to hear the CBI’s review petition challenging the discharge order.

Excise Policy Case Background

The controversy began when a lower court on February 27 discharged Kejriwal, Sisodia and 21 others in the alleged liquor policy irregularities case, ruling that the prosecution’s case was “completely discredited”.Justice Sharma had also rejected Kejriwal’s plea to recuse himself from the case, saying the application did not meet the legal threshold to establish reasonable apprehension of bias.Several AAP leaders had boycotted the proceedings before Justice Sharma after he refused to withdraw from the case.In his order to initiate contempt proceedings, Justice Sharma reportedly said that although fair criticism of judicial orders is permitted, “there is a difference between fair criticism and running a campaign to portray a judge as biased.”
