Bhopal: A four-month-old baby girl died in Satna, allegedly suffering from malnutrition, while her twin brother remains in intensive care, exposing lapses in rural health surveillance after the siblings were treated by a quack for 15 days.Supriya alias Priyanshi and Naitik of Pathra village of Majhgawan were born on December 21, 2025 with a weight of 2 kg and less.Despite being high risk, he was never enrolled in a nutrition rehabilitation center.After suffering from vomiting, fever and diarrhea for two weeks, he was taken to a quack doctor in Jugulpur instead of the hospital.

The quack treated him for about 15 days.Both of them were brought to Majhgawan Health Center on April 21 severely malnourished – Naitik weighed 2.93 kg and dehydrated, while Supriya weighed 2.86 kg.Both were referred to Satna District Hospital where they were kept in the Pediatric ICU.The next day, when the girl’s condition deteriorated, both of them were referred to the Medical College of Rewa. The girl died soon after referral, while the boy is undergoing treatment.Officials said the infants were given cow and goat milk because their mothers were too weak to breastfeed. There was a lack of guidance on child nutrition in the family. This was his fourth delivery; One child has already died.A joint health and WCD report flagged several failings in the case.Although registered on a nutrition tracker and given vaccination at birth, the twins were lost to follow-up. Home visits were not made regularly.Field staff failed to ensure timely referral as children remained ill with quacks for 15 days. Mandatory NRC entry for low birth weight was abandoned.The report held the supervisor and ANM responsible for poor monitoring and confirmed action against the Anganwadi worker.Block Medical Officer Dr. Rupesh Soni had lodged an FIR against quack Premlal Anuragi of Jugulpur on April 22. Raids on his clinic found that he ran the clinic without a license, used banned drugs and improperly disposed of medical waste. Medicines were confiscated and the clinic was sealed. There have been repeated cases of malnutrition in Majhgawan, raising concerns over health care and nutrition awareness at the grassroots level.
